Anaerobic digestion of multiple substrates can generate more biogas while remaining stable, if positive synergistic effects are achieved. The type of co-digested substrates and the mixing ratio used, are the most important variables as each substrate has unique set of characteristics. Optimizing the volume ratios by testing various substrate mixing ratios is a popular method for determining the best-performing ratio of substrate mixture.

Mesophilic and Thermophilic Anaerobic Digestion of Wheat Straw in a CSTR System with 'Synthetic Manure': Impact of Nickel and Tungsten on Methane Yields, Cell Count, and Microbiome.

Lignocellulosic residues, such as straw, are currently considered as candidates for biogas production. Therefore, straw fermentations were performed to quantitatively estimate methane yields and cell counts, as well as to qualitatively determine the microbiome. Six fully automated, continuously stirred biogas reactors were used: three mesophilic (41 °C) and three thermophilic (58 °C).

Association Between Anxiety and Cognitive Decline Over 12 Years in a Population-Based Cohort.

Background: Findings on the associations between anxiety and cognitive decline are mixed and often confounded.

Objective: We studied whether anxiety symptoms were associated with the risk of cognitive decline after adequate adjustment of confounding factors.

Methods: Our study consists of 2,551 community-dwelling older adults recruited between the ages of 60-64 years and followed up for 12 years in the PATH Through Life cohort study.

Aquatic invasive weeds affect hydrological, ecological, and socio-economic activities on freshwater ecosystems. On the Lower Volta River (LVR) of Ghana, invasive aquatic weeds have been known to be nuisance to fishing, navigation, aquaculture, hydropower production and other agricultural practices in the area. While information on the spatial and temporal distribution of aquatic weeds would be beneficial in improving weed management and control measures on the river, such information is very scanty.

Patient's Perspective on Management of Chronic Pain Associated With Frequent Emergency Attendances and Psychiatric Diagnoses.

This case presents a patient's perspective of clinical care and management of chronic pain with a psychiatric component, the latter of which was not initially apparent to both patient and services. It aims to understand patient's experience of illness (part A), its effects on patient's family (part B), experience of care from liaison psychiatry (part C), service provision for persons with chronic pain and its often-neglected mental health aspect (part D), and patient's hopes for the future (part E). Early involvement of liaison psychiatry may target the interaction between physical and psychological factors and provide appropriate interventions across the health-care system.

Biomethane potential of the POME generated in the palm oil industry in Ghana from 2002 to 2009.

The palm oil industry experienced significant improvement in its production level from 2002 to 2009 from the established companies, medium scale mills (MSM), small scale and other private holdings (SS and OPH) groups. However, the same cannot be said for treatment of the palm oil mill effluent (POME) produced. The quantity of crude palm oil (CPO) produced in Ghana from 2002 to 2009 and IPCC guidelines for National Greenhouse Gas Inventories, specifically on industrial wastewater were used in this study.

Fluxionality and lability in rhenium 4'-hydroxyterpyridine complexes: evidence for an associative mechanism and correlated fluxionality and lability.

The complexes [ReX(CO)(3)(N,N-eta(2)-4'-hydroxy-2-2',6'-2''-terpyridine)] (X = Cl,Br,I) have been synthesised and their ligand exchange reactions and fluxionality of the terpyridine unit studied. The halides are far more labile in these species than in analogous bipyridines, and it is proposed that the ligand fluxionality is involved in this reactivity. Structural studies of the family are reported along with spectroscopic studies including variable temperature NMR which is used to demonstrate a negative entropy of activation for the fluxional process.

Disease and health management in Asian aquaculture.

Asia contributes more than 90% to the world's aquaculture production. Like other farming systems, aquaculture is plagued with disease problems resulting from its intensification and commercialization. This paper describes the various factors, providing specific examples, which have contributed to the current disease problems faced by what is now the fastest growing food-producing sector globally.
