Objective: Infection with the hepatitis delta virus (HDV), a unique RNA virus that requires hepatitis B virus (HBV) antigens for its assembly, replication, and transmission, causes severe viral hepatitis. Compared to HBV monoinfection, HDV infection increases the risk of severe liver disease, necessity for liver transplant, and mortality. Global HDV prevalence estimates vary from 5% to 15% among persons with HBV, but screening guidelines for HDV are inconsistent; some recommend risk-based screening, while others recommend universal screening for all people with HBV.

Article Synopsis
  • Hepatitis Delta Virus (HDV) is a serious type of hepatitis that makes liver problems worse for people who already have Hepatitis B.
  • Many people don't know about HDV, including doctors and those at risk, which makes it hard to diagnose and treat.
  • A special meeting brought together experts and people affected by HDV to discuss ways to raise awareness, improve testing, and ensure better care for patients.

Multiple hippocampal transection (MHT) is a novel surgical procedure that serves to disrupt seizure propagation fibers within the hippocampus without impairing verbal memory or the loss of stem cells. Given the paucity of literature regarding the utility and long-term outcome of MHT, a review is presented of the current literature to support the utility of this procedure in the treatment of intractable temporal lobe epilepsy. Long-term outcome analysis of this technique has been reported by 2 independent groups.

Two cases of polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy (PCV) complicating benign choroidal nevus and their tomographic features at spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) are reported. Two eyes with choroidal nevus and associated subretinal fluid underwent complete ophthalmological examination, SD-OCT, fundus fluorescein angiography, and indocyanine green angiography (ICGA). SD-OCT and ICGA confirmed the diagnosis of PCV in both cases.

Purpose: Multiple hippocampal transection (MHT) is a new surgical procedure which disrupts seizure propagation within the hippocampus without impairing verbal memory or the loss of stem cells. Since there are very few papers on this procedure, the authors are presenting their long term results to increase the database on this procedure.

Method: Long term outcome in 15 consecutive patients who had MHT for unlilateral temporal lobe epilepsy, had intra-operative electro-corticography (ECoG) and have a minimum follow-up of at least 2 years is presented.

Branch retinal vein occlusion (BRVO) associated with ocular tuberculosis (TB) is a rare presentation of retinal vasculitis but it can also present in the absence of active uveitis. We present a 39-year-old patient with BRVO who slowly developed bilateral papilloedema due to TB in the central nervous system. To our knowledge, this is the first case of systemic central nervous system TB confirmed by biopsy presenting as a branch retinal vein occlusion and shows the importance of extensive causative investigation of BRVO, especially for young patients.

Background: The thermogenic and metabolic properties of capsinoids appear to mimic those of the more pungent sister compound capsaicin. However, few data exist on how capsinoid ingestion affects energy expenditure in humans and no data exist on its interaction with exercise. We aimed to determine how ingestion of capsinoids affected energy expenditure, lipid oxidation and blood metabolites at rest and during moderate intensity exercise.

Popular magazines often rank cities in terms of various aspects of quality of life. Such ranking studies can motivate people to visit or relocate to a particular city or increase the frequency with which they engage in healthy behaviors. With careful consideration of study design and data limitations, these efforts also can assist policymakers in identifying local public health issues.
