Integrated Hemophilia Patient Care via a National Network of Care Centers in the United States: A Model for Rare Coagulation Disorders.

Rare, chronic diseases such as hemophilia and other congenital coagulation disorders require coordinated delivery of services for optimal outcomes. Hemophilia Treatment Centers (HTCs) are specialized, multidisciplinary health-care centers providing team-based care to meet the physical, psychosocial, and emotional needs of people with hemophilia (PWH) and may serve as a model for other rare coagulation disorders. Health-care purchasers, as well as the general medical community, may not appreciate the breadth and quality of services provided by HTCs.

Air Pollution Exposure and Daily Lung Function in Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease: Effect Modification by Eosinophil Level.

Few studies have assessed personal exposure to pollutants and lung function among adults with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Blood eosinophil level may be a biomarker of airway inflammation and pollution susceptibility. To evaluate if daily pollutant exposures are associated with lung function and if associations are modified by eosinophil level in COPD.

Aim: This concept analysis aimed to offer insight into how opioid exposure affects the quality and construction of the maternal-infant bond.

Background: Maternal-infant bonding can be influenced by maternal opioid use disorder and the neonatal intensive care unit environment. Many interventions for mothers with opioid use disorder focus on enhancing parental skills, but often the emotional and relational features of the maternal-infant bond have been overlooked.

Tobacco Tracker: A New Tool to Support College Smoke and Tobacco Free Policies.

Introduction: University community members are critical to the success of their smoke and tobacco free (STF) policies. The present study evaluates changes in social enforcement-related attitudes and behaviors following introduction of a new online Tobacco Tracker tool in two university settings.

Methods: Campus wide surveys were administered to current students, faculty, and staff at two California public universities with 100% STF policies before (November 2018; N = 5078) and after (December 2019-January 2020; N = 4853) introduction of Tobacco Tracker in February 2019.

Pediatric burns are life-threatening injuries due to the acute injury and secondary complications. In acute-phase burns, hypovolemia and vasoconstriction cause renal impairment. Sepsis and multiorgan failure compound the problem resulting in morbidity and mortality.

Evaluating Digital Instructional Materials for K-12 Online and Blended Learning.

With the large increase in online instruction, including remote instruction with online materials during the COVID-19 pandemic, there also was an increase in the use of instructional materials that were made to be displayed online or were digitized for online use. However, teachers have not had access to guidance about how to select and evaluate online instructional materials for classroom use. The lack of guidance has the potential to harm historically excluded populations of students and could frustrate teachers as they learn to teach with digital materials.

Perseverance rover reveals an ancient delta-lake system and flood deposits at Jezero crater, Mars.

Observations from orbital spacecraft have shown that Jezero crater on Mars contains a prominent fan-shaped body of sedimentary rock deposited at its western margin. The Perseverance rover landed in Jezero crater in February 2021. We analyze images taken by the rover in the 3 months after landing.

Genotyping Cyclospora cayetanensis From Multiple Outbreak Clusters With An Emphasis on a Cluster Linked to Bagged Salad Mix-United States, 2020.

Cyclosporiasis is a diarrheal illness caused by the foodborne parasite Cyclospora cayetanensis. Annually reported cases have been increasing in the United States prompting development of genotyping tools to aid cluster detection. A recently developed Cyclospora genotyping system based on 8 genetic markers was applied to clinical samples collected during the cyclosporiasis peak period of 2020, facilitating assessment of its epidemiologic utility.

Instructor Talk-the noncontent language used by an instructor during class time-is likely to influence learning environments in science classrooms from the student perspective. Despite Instructor Talk being found in every science course thus far, investigations into student perceptions and memories of it are limited. We investigated to what extent undergraduate biology students 1) were aligned with researchers in their perceptions of Instructor Talk as Positively Phrased or Negatively Phrased and 2) remembered Instructor Talk.

Impact of COVID-19 containment and closure policies on tropospheric nitrogen dioxide: A global perspective.

The containment and closure policies adopted in attempts to contain the spread of the 2019 coronavirus disease (COVID-19) have impacted nearly every aspect of our lives including the environment we live in. These influences may be observed when evaluating changes in pollutants such as nitrogen dioxide (NO), which is an important indicator for economic, industrial, and other anthropogenic activities. We utilized a data-driven approach to analyze the relationship between tropospheric NO and COVID-19 mitigation measures by clustering regions based on pollution levels rather than constraining the study units by predetermined administrative boundaries as pollution knows no borders.

Previous research has noted that many factors greatly influence the spread of COVID-19. Contrary to explicit factors that are measurable, such as population density, number of medical staff, and the daily test rate, many factors are not directly observable, for instance, culture differences and attitudes toward the disease, which may introduce unobserved heterogeneity. Most contemporary COVID-19 related research has focused on modeling the relationship between explicitly measurable factors and the response variable of interest (such as the infection rate or the death rate).

Identifying perceived facilitators and barriers to switching among people who smoke cigarettes is critical to optimizing health impact. This is particularly important for the most dominant e-cigarette device, nicotine salt pod electronic cigarettes.

Significance: Cerebral visual impairment (CVI) is the leading cause of visual impairment in the developed world. Providing children with CVI with the appropriate treatment ensures the best possible visual outcome and potentially improves quality of life.

Objectives: The objectives of this study are to determine the predictors of success following extracorporeal shock-wave lithotripsy (ESWL) in a contemporary cohort at a high-volume stone center.

Methods: We conducted a retrospective review all patients who underwent an elective ESWL within our institution over a 24-month period (January 2014 to December 2015). Data on patient demographics, stone variables, and inpatient treatment outcomes were evaluated.

Mitral Valve Translocation: A Novel Operation for the Treatment of Secondary Mitral Regurgitation.

Background: Conventional annuloplasty repair of secondary (functional) ischemic mitral regurgitation (IMR) is associated with a 60% recurrence of moderate or greater mitral regurgitation at 2 years. We developed a novel repair technique for IMR that addresses the underlying geometric alterations of the mitral valve apparatus and compared outcomes with those of conventional repair in a swine model.

Methods: Chronic IMR was induced by percutaneous embolization of the circumflex artery.

Background: The association between circulating cholesterol and triglyceride levels and ovarian cancer risk remains unclear.

Methods: We prospectively evaluated the association between cholesterol [total, low-density lipoprotein (LDL-C), and high-density lipoprotein (HDL-C)] and triglycerides and ovarian cancer incidence in a case-control study nested in the Nurses' Health Study (NHS) and NHSII cohorts and a longitudinal analysis in the UK Biobank.

Results: A total of 290 epithelial ovarian cancer cases in the NHS/NHSII and 551 cases in UK Biobank were diagnosed after blood collection.

An emergency department-based intensive care unit is associated with decreased hospital length of stay for upper gastrointestinal bleeding.

Introduction: Upper gastrointestinal bleeding (UGIB) is associated with substantial morbidity, mortality, and intensive care unit (ICU) utilization. Initial risk stratification and disposition from the Emergency Department (ED) can prove challenging due to limited data points during a short period of observation. An ED-based ICU (ED-ICU) may allow more rapid delivery of ICU-level care, though its impact on patients with UGIB is unknown.

Shooting Your Accuracy in the Foot? Examining the Short-Term Effect of Playing an Action or Strategy Video Game on Cognitive Control.

The current study examined the effects of brief video game exposure on cognitive control using event-related potentials (ERPs). Cognitive control was assessed by ERP components associated with the ability to detect (N2) and resolve (SP) conflict when the conflict was either expected or unexpected. After playing either an action or strategy video game, participants completed a counting Stroop task while ERPs were recorded.

Maternal and Neonatal Outcomes in Nulliparous Participants Undergoing Labor Induction by Cervical Ripening Method.

Objective: This study aimed to evaluate maternal and neonatal outcomes by method of cervical ripening for labor induction among low-risk nulliparous individuals.

Study Design: This is a secondary analysis of a multicenter randomized trial of labor induction at 39 weeks versus expectant management in low-risk nulliparous participants. Participants undergoing cervical ripening for labor induction in either group were included.

dV-Trainer vs. da Vinci Simulator: Comparison of Virtual Reality Platforms for Robotic Surgery.

Background: A virtual reality (VR) curriculum performed on the da Vinci Simulation System (DVSS) was previously shown to be effective in training fellows. The dV-Trainer is a separate platform with similar features to the da Vinci console, but its efficacy and utility versus the DVSS simulator are not well known.

Materials And Methods: A mastery-based VR curriculum was completed by surgical fellows on the DVSS (2014-2016) and on the dV-Trainer (2016-2018) at a large academic center.
