Background: Chronic ankle instability (CAI) has been associated with neuromuscular control dysfunction, particularly of the peroneal musculature.

Research Question: How do neuromuscular characteristics of the peroneal muscles, including corticospinal excitability, strength, proprioception (force sense) and electromyographic measures differ in individuals with CAI compared to healthy control counterparts aged 18-45?

Methods: A systematic review with meta-analysis was conducted by retrieving relevant articles from electronic databases including EBSCOhost (CINAHL Complete, AMED, SPORTDiscus), Ovid (MEDLINE, Embase), Web of Science, Scopus and Cochrane Library as well as Grey literature sources. The eligibility and methodological quality of the included case-control and cross-sectional studies were assessed by two reviewers.

A Retrospective Analysis of the Impact of Electroconvulsive Therapy on Anxiety Symptoms in Patients With Treatment-Resistant Depression.

Background: Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is an effective treatment for treatment-resistant depression (TRD). There are limited data on the improvement of anxiety symptoms in patients receiving ECT for TRD.

Objective: The aim of the study was to examine the extent to which anxiety symptom severity improves, relative to improvements in depressive symptoms, in TRD patients receiving an acute course of ECT.

Background: The largest proportion of people at risk of catastrophic expenditures for surgical care live in low- and middle-income countries. This study aims to evaluate the financial impact among surgical patients at Kibuye Hope Hospital (KHH) in Burundi.

Methods: Data were collected from patients undergoing a surgical procedure at KHH from January to October 2019.

The objective of this project was to describe the factors influencing access to pediatric cancer care in Northern Tanzania using the Three Delays Model. This was a cross-sectional qualitative study conducted between June and August 2023 at Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Centre (KCMC).

Human proficiency for bipedal locomotion relies on the structure and function of our feet, including the interplay between active muscles and passive structures acting on the toes during the propulsive phase of gait. However, our understanding of the relative contributions of these different structures remains incomplete. We aimed to determine the distinct toe-flexion torque-angle relationships of the plantar intrinsic muscles (PIMs), extrinsic muscles and passive structures, therefore offering insight into their force-generating capabilities and importance for walking and running.

Our aims were to evaluate the cost-effectiveness, societal economic benefits, and return on investment (ROI) for surgical care in a conflict-affected region in Sudan. We conducted a retrospective study of surgical care from January to December 2022 at the Mother of Mercy-Gidel Hospital (MMH) in the Nuba Mountains of Sudan, a semi-autonomous region characterized by chronic and cyclical conflict.

Using the force platform for jump height estimates is increasingly popular owing to technological advancements and its relative ease of use in diverse settings.

Background: The efficacy and safety of endovascular thrombectomy (EVT) beyond 6 hours from stroke onset for patients with large vessel occlusion (LVO) selected without CT perfusion(CTP) or MR imaging(MRI) is undetermined. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of the current literature comparing outcomes for late presenting patients with LVO treated by best medical management (BMM) with those selected for EVT based only on non-contrast CT(NCCT)/CT angiography(CTA) (without CTP or MRI).

The burden of pediatric surgical conditions in Somaliland is high and the pediatric anesthesia capacity across the country remains poorly understood. The international standards developed by the World Health Organization and World Federation of Societies of Anaesthesiologists (WHO-WFSA) serve as a guideline to assess the provision of anesthetic care. This study aims to describe anesthesia capacity for children in Somaliland and assess progress towards reaching the WHO-WFSA international standards.

Towards attainment of the 2030 goal for childhood cancer survival for the World Health Organization Global Initiative for Childhood Cancer: An ecological, cross-sectional study.

The World Health Organization (WHO) recently launched the Global Initiative for Childhood Cancer (GICC), with the goal of attaining at least 60% cancer survival for children worldwide by the year 2030. This study aims to describe the global patterns of childhood cancer survival in 2019 to help guide progress in attaining the GICC target goal. In this ecological, cross-sectional study, we used 5-year net childhood cancer survival (2015-2019) data from a prior micro-modeling study from 197 countries and territories.

This study aimed to compare a traditional and a compliant LCS during walking and a step-up task to quantify differences in oxygen consumption and trunk-pelvis kinematics.

An enhancer-AAV toolbox to target and manipulate distinct interneuron subtypes.

In recent years, we and others have identified a number of enhancers that, when incorporated into rAAV vectors, can restrict the transgene expression to particular neuronal populations. Yet, viral tools to access and manipulate fine neuronal subtypes are still limited. Here, we performed systematic analysis of single cell genomic data to identify enhancer candidates for each of the cortical interneuron subtypes.

Automated Identification of Fall-related Injuries in Unstructured Clinical Notes.

Fall-related injuries (FRIs) are a major cause of hospitalizations among older patients, but identifying them in unstructured clinical notes poses challenges for large-scale research. In this study, we developed and evaluated Natural Language Processing (NLP) models to address this issue. We utilized all available clinical notes from the Mass General Brigham for 2,100 older adults, identifying 154,949 paragraphs of interest through automatic scanning for FRI-related keywords.
