The identification of a point mutation (p.Ser59Leu) in the CHCHD10 gene was the first genetic evidence that mitochondrial dysfunction can trigger motor neuron disease. Since then, we have shown that this mutation leads to the disorganization of the MItochondrial contact site and Cristae Organizing System (MICOS) complex that maintains the mitochondrial cristae structure.

Article Synopsis
  • Angioimmunoblastic T cell lymphoma (AITL) is a rare and poorly treated cancer, but a new murine model has been developed to test potential therapies, particularly CAR T cell therapy targeting the cancer-driving CD4 Tfh cells.
  • Researchers utilized a lentiviral vector to create a CD4-specific CAR that only affects CD8 T cells, preventing damage to the CAR T cells themselves.
  • Results showed that these engineered CD8 T cells successfully eliminated malignant CD4 Tfh cells in mouse models, leading to significantly prolonged survival and a reduction in tumor size, indicating a promising new treatment approach for T cell lymphomas.

The purpose of this in vitro study was to develop calcium sulfate (CS)-based disks infused with an antimicrobial drug, which can be used as a post-surgical treatment modality for osteomyelitis. CS powder was embedded with 10% antibiotic, amoxicillin (AMX) or moxifloxacin (MFX), to form composite disks 11 mm in diameter that were tested for their degradation and antibiotic release profiles. For the disk degradation study portion, the single drug-loaded disks were placed in individual meshes, subsequently submerged in phosphate-buffered saline (PBS), and incubated at 37 °C.

Background: With the increasing legalization and popularity of marijuana, it is frequently and sometimes unintentionally combined with nicotine-containing products. As a consequence, patients may fail to accurately report usage during preoperative examinations or remain unaware of the inclusion of nicotine. This poses a challenge for clinicians in identifying preoperative nicotine exposure.

Hybridization has been recognized to play important roles in evolution, however studies of the genetic consequence are still lagging behind in vertebrates due to the lack of appropriate experimental systems. Fish of the genus Xiphophorus are proposed to have evolved with multiple ancient and ongoing hybridization events. They have served as an informative research model in evolutionary biology and in biomedical research on human disease for more than a century.

Background:  Microvascular free tissue transfer is a common tool for the reconstruction of oncologic head and neck defects. Adequate preoperative assessment can aid in appropriate risk stratification and peri-operative optimization. The modified five-item frailty index (mFI-5) is a validated risk-assessment scale; however, its utility in head and neck free-flap reconstruction is unknown when compared with other common risk factors.

Cyclic GMP-AMP synthase (cGAS) senses aberrant DNA during infection, cancer and inflammatory disease, and initiates potent innate immune responses through the synthesis of 2'3'-cyclic GMP-AMP (cGAMP). The indiscriminate activity of cGAS towards DNA demands tight regulatory mechanisms that are necessary to maintain cell and tissue homeostasis under normal conditions. Inside the cell nucleus, anchoring to nucleosomes and competition with chromatin architectural proteins jointly prohibit cGAS activation by genomic DNA.
