Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigates the relationship between clonal hematopoiesis of indeterminate potential (CHIP) and the development of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in patients with metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD).
  • - A sample of 208 individuals with MASLD-HCC and controls was analyzed through whole exome sequencing, revealing that CHIP occurred in 13.1% of participants, with significant correlations to age and advanced liver fibrosis.
  • - Findings indicate that certain CHIP-related genetic mutations (particularly non-DNTM3A and TET2) are independently linked to HCC progression, suggesting that CHIP could be an important factor in identifying patients at risk for liver cancer.

Eosinophilic esophagitis is a chronic disease whose incidence and prevalence are increasing, based on a genetic-driven interaction between environment and immune system. Several gene loci involved in the development of the disease have been identified. A two-step mechanism has been hypothesized: a thymic stromal lymphopoietin-induced allergic sensitization followed by upregulation of CAPN14-related esophageal-specific pathways.

The gluten-free diet (GFD) has gained increasing popularity in recent years, supported by marketing campaigns, media messages and social networks. Nevertheless, real knowledge of gluten and GF-related implications for health is still poor among the general population. The GFD has also been suggested for non-celiac gluten/wheat sensitivity (NCG/WS), a clinical entity characterized by intestinal and extraintestinal symptoms induced by gluten ingestion in the absence of celiac disease (CD) or wheat allergy (WA).

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a very common functional gastrointestinal disease. Its pathogenesis is multifactorial and not yet clearly defined, and hence, its therapy mainly relies on symptomatic treatments. Changes in lifestyle and dietary behavior are usually the first step, but unfortunately, there is little high-quality scientific evidence regarding a dietary approach.

Food is often considered to be a precipitating factor of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) symptoms. In recent years, there has been a growing interest in FODMAPs (Fermentable Oligo-, Di-, Mono-saccharides, And Polyols), which can be found in many common foods. A low FODMAP diet (LFD) is increasingly suggested for IBS treatment.

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and polyps, are common colorectal pathologies in western society and are risk factors for development of colorectal cancer (CRC). Genomic instability is a cancer hallmark and is connected to changes in chromosomal structure, often caused by double strand break formation (DSB), and aneuploidy. Cellular stress, may contribute to genomic instability.

A technique to enhance the response and performance of Brillouin distributed fiber sensors is proposed and experimentally validated. The method consists in creating a multi-frequency pump pulse interacting with a matching multi-frequency continuous-wave probe. To avoid nonlinear cross-interaction between spectral lines, the method requires that the distinct pump pulse components and temporal traces reaching the photo-detector are subject to wavelength-selective delaying.

A photonic sensor based on a 10-cm-long fiber Bragg grating (FBG) is presented and experimentally validated that is dedicated to detect the presence and the position of a temperature gradient. The system is based on the measurement of the central frequency distribution of the grating based on time-frequency domain analysis. A short optical pulse, having duration much shorter than the transit time along the grating, is coupled into the FBG, and the back-reflected pulse is scanned by means of an oscilloscope.
