In preclinical studies, the anti-inflammatory drug colchicine, which has never been tested in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, enhanced the expression of autophagy factors and inhibited accumulation of transactive response DNA-binding protein 43 kDa, a known histopathological marker of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. This multicentre, randomized, double-blind trial enrolled patients with probable or definite amyotrophic lateral sclerosis who experienced symptom onset within the past 18 months. Patients were randomly assigned in a 1:1:1 ratio to receive colchicine at a dose of 0.

The identification of human fire victims is a challenging task in forensic medicine. The heat-induced alterations of biological tissues can make the conventional anthropological analyses difficult. Even if the DNA profile of the victim is achieved, it is possible that no match can be found in a forensic DNA database, thus hindering positive identification.

Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) still has a poor response to therapies, partly due to their cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs). Here, we investigate the synergistic impact of a combinatory approach between a known chemotherapy agent, such as gemcitabine (GEM), and gene-modified human mesenchymal stromal/stem cells (MSCs) secreting the pro-apoptotic soluble (s)TRAIL (sTRAIL MSCs) on both PDAC cells and CAFs. The combo significantly impacts on PDAC survival in 2D and 3D models.

Article Synopsis
  • Small and large for gestational age (SGA and LGA) infants have higher morbidity risks compared to those appropriate for gestational age (AGA), influenced by maternal factors like pre-pregnancy BMI and gestational weight gain (GWG).
  • A study analyzed data from 110,594 mother-infant pairs to determine how these maternal factors affected infant health outcomes, particularly hypoxic and traumatic morbidities.
  • Results indicated that overweight and obese mothers had a significantly increased risk of hypoxic morbidity in infants, especially when GWG exceeded recommendations, while traumatic morbidity was more common in obese mothers.

Background: The addition of pertuzumab (P) to trastuzumab (H) and standard chemotherapy (CT) as neoadjuvant treatment (NaT) for patients with HER2 + breast cancer (BC), has shown to increase the pathological complete response (pCR) rate, without main safety concerns. The aim of NeoPowER trial is to evaluate safety and efficacy of P + H + CT in a real-world population.

Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of stage II-III, HER2 + BC patients treated with NaT: who received P + H + CT (neopower group) in 5 Emilia Romagna institutions were compared with an historical group who received H + CT (control group).

Introduction: The effectiveness of early interventions in young autistic children is well established, but there is great interindividual variability in treatment response. Predictors of response to naturalistic developmental behavioral interventions (NDBI), like the Early Start Denver Model (ESDM), are needed.

Methods: We conducted an exploratory study to prospectively seek predictors of response in 32 young children treated with ESDM after receiving an ASD diagnosis.

Introduction: Pain is a multidimensional experience that varies among individuals and has a significant impact on their health. A biopsychosocial approach is recommended for effective pain management; however, health professionals' education is weak on this issue. Patient involvement is a promising didactic methodology in developing a more holistic perspective, however there is a lack of reliable evidence on this topic.

To investigate the impact of timing, in vitro activity and appropriateness of empirical antimicrobials on the outcome of late-onset sepsis among preterm very low birth weight infants that are at high risk of developing meningitis. This retrospective study included 83 LOS episodes in 73 very low birth weight infants born at ≤32 weeks' gestation with positive blood and/or cerebrospinal fluid culture or polymerase chain reaction at >72 h of age. To define the appropriateness of empirical antimicrobials we considered both their in vitro activity and their ideal delivery through the blood-brain barrier when meningitis was confirmed or not ruled out through a lumbar puncture.
