Dorper rams are widely distributed throughout the world under different climatic conditions, however, little is known about their reproductive performance in desert regions. Ten Dorper rams were individually housed and exposed to thermoneutrality for 35 d in spring (23.6 ± 5.

The objective of this study was to develop an equation to predict rectal temperature (RT) using body surface temperatures (BSTs), physiological and climatic variables in pubertal Holstein heifers in an arid region. Two hundred Holstein heifers were used from July to September during two consecutive summers (2019 and 2020). Respiratory frequency (RF) was used as a physiological variable and ambient temperature, relative humidity and temperature-humidity index as climatic variables.

Free ferulic acid (FA) is a natural compound with antioxidant properties which mitigates the negative effects of cold stress in sheep; however, its impact on thermoregulatory responses in heat-stressed sheep has not been defined. The objective was to evaluate the effects of FA supplementation on physiological responses, serum analyte concentrations, and the hematological profile of heat-stressed hair ewe lambs. Twenty-two Dorper × Katahdin ewe lambs (initial body weight = 23.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to evaluate the impact of soybean oil (SBO), high in n-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids, on the health and growth of ewe lambs from mothers fed different levels of SBO during late gestation in hot conditions.
  • Findings showed that while the rectal temperature of lambs remained stable, the respiratory rate increased with higher SBO levels, indicating a physiological response to heat.
  • The results also demonstrated that increased SBO in the maternal diet led to better weight gain and feed efficiency in lambs without negatively affecting other vital serum metabolites or electrolyte levels, suggesting it could be a beneficial strategy in managing lamb growth during heat stress.

In this research communication we describe the creation of an equation for the prediction of milk yield (MY) from udder volume (UV). A total of 280 measurements were collected between 5 and 15 d postpartum (pp) from 36 multiparous Pelibuey ewes. Study variables were measured between 2 and 9 weeks pp and MY was measured by manual milking, UV prior to and following milking was measured using the technique of making moulds from aluminium foil.

To evaluate the effects of pre- and post-conception undernutrition (UN) on fetal and placental development at mid-gestation, 28 Katahdin × Pelibuey multiparous ewes were blocked by weight and assigned to the following four dietary treatments (n = 7 each): ewes fed 100% (control) or 60% of their nutritional requirements 30 days before mating (UNPre), 50 days after mating (UNPost) or during both periods (UNB). Four twin-bearing ewes were selected per treatment at day 50 post-conception and then slaughtered at day 75 of gestation to analyze their fetuses. Control fetuses were heavier (P < 0.

Rectal temperature (RT) is the foremost physiological variable indicating if an animal is suffering hyperthermia. However, this variable is traditionally measured by invasive methods, which may compromise animal welfare. Models to predict RT have been developed for growing pigs and lactating dairy cows, but not for pregnant heat-stressed ewes.
