  • Granular Cell Tumor (GCT) is a rare benign oral lesion, often misdiagnosed due to its similarity to other conditions, highlighting the need for more awareness on its prevalence and characteristics.
  • A study at six diagnostic centers in Brazil and Argentina analyzed 61 GCT cases, predominantly in females (73.8%), with most tumors on the tongue, presenting as painless nodules or papules in various colors and sizes.
  • Histopathological analysis revealed distinctive cell characteristics, with low agreement between clinical and histological diagnoses, but no local recurrences were noted during the follow-up period.

Traumatic ulcerative granuloma with stromal eosinophilia (TUGSE) is a rare lesion of a traumatic-reactive nature of the oral mucosa that can clinically mimic an oral carcinoma. A 59-year-old male patient presented painful ulceration with indurated margins on the base of the tongue, extending to the floor of the mouth. The use of ill-fitting denture hurting the mucosa of the region was reported by the patient.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigated the clinical and pathological characteristics of 19 oral solitary fibrous tumors (SFTs), revealing a predominance in females and an average patient age of 47.3 years.
  • Most tumors were found in the buccal mucosa and appeared as asymptomatic nodules; over half exhibited a classic hybrid pattern in their cellular structure.
  • All tumors tested positive for specific markers (STAT6 and CD34), and follow-up data indicated no local recurrence in the few patients tracked, underscoring the need for accurate diagnosis by pathologists to avoid misdiagnosis of these rare tumors.

Carcinoma Ex-Pleomorphic Adenoma (CExPA) is a salivary gland carcinoma derived from a primary or recurrent benign pleomorphic adenoma (PA) extremely rare in minor salivary glands. In this paper, we report the case of a male afrodescendant patient, 37 years old, presenting a palatal irregular nodular lesion with approximately 3.5 cm diameter.

Background: The present study aimed to evaluate the clinicopathologic features of salivary gland tumors (SGTs) in a Brazillian northeast population.

Material And Methods: A retrospective descriptive cross-sectional study was performed (1995-2009). All cases of SGTs diagnosed in a private surgical pathology service in Brazil were reviewed, and clinicopathological data were collected.

Article Synopsis
  • Oral mucocele (OM) is the most common type of lesion in minor salivary glands, with a study analyzing 43,754 biopsy records in Brazil identifying key demographic features and recurrence rates.
  • The research found that OMs were primarily seen in young females, predominantly affecting the lower lip and floor of the mouth, and most cases were treated successfully with excisional biopsy.
  • Notably, the study revealed that younger patients, larger lesions, and those in specific locations like the ventral tongue had higher recurrence rates, particularly when treated with laser surgery compared to traditional methods.

UV radiation can cause damages, such as erythema, skin photoaging, and carcinogenesis. The adoption of protective measures against sun exposure is essential to prevent these damages, and the interest in using natural substances as an alternative for photoprotection is growing. Thus, hesperetin with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anticancer properties is a promising substance to be used with photochemopreventive action and to protect the skin from damage induced by UV radiation.

Inflammatory arthritis is the most prevalent chronic inflammatory disease worldwide. The pathology of the disease is characterized by increased inflammation and oxidative stress, which leads to chronic pain and functional loss in the joints. Conventional anti-arthritic drugs used to relieve pain and other arthritic symptoms often cause severe side effects.

Basaloid squamous-cell carcinoma (BSCC) is an uncommon variant of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) consisting of atypical squamous and basaloid cells. It is an aggressive lesion that most commonly affects the oropharynx, being rare in intraoral sites. In this paper, we report the case of a male patient, 42 years old, smoker and chronic drinker, presenting a vegetating and ulcerated leukoerythroplastic lesion, asymptomatic, with five months of evolution, located on the floor of the mouth.

Hyalinizing clear cell carcinoma (HCCC) is a rare malignant neoplasm that commonly arises in the palate, whose occurrence in other intraoral sites is extremely uncommon. We present a case of a 74 years old afro-descendant female presenting an asymptomatic swelling in the lingual region of teeth 32, 33 and 34, with four months of Evolution, promoting an area of bone resorption with imprecise margins. Incisional biopsy revealed proliferative nests of clear cells within a hyalinized fibrous connective tissue.

The pathophysiological process of the disease, Covid-19, is mediated by innate immunity, with the presence of macrophages responsible for secreting type 1 and 6 interleukins (IL), tumor necrosis factor (TNF) leading to dilation of endothelial cells with a consequent increase in capillary permeability. The treatment of this disease has been much discussed, but the variability in the clinical picture, the difficulties for diagnosis and treatment, especially of those patients who have the most severe clinical condition of the disease. Immunization is an effective tool for controlling the spread and overload of health services, but its effectiveness involves high investments in the acquisition of inputs, development of vaccines, and logistics of storage and distribution.

The malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor (MPNST) is a rare, aggressive malignant tumor that usually develops in the context of neurofibromatosis type 1. In the oral cavity, these tumors are excelling rare, especially in intraosseous sites. Herein, we report an unusual presentation of intraosseous MPNST affecting the mandible posterior region in a 28-year-old male without neurofibromatosis type 1 discovered as an incidental find on imaging exam.

Leiomyosarcoma is a rare type of cancer that affects smooth muscle tissue. Leiomyosarcomas are exceedingly rare in the oral cavity, particularly in the buccal mucosa. The diagnosis is challenging due to non-specific clinical features and significant overlap of morphological findings with several spindle cell tumors.

Pleomorphic lipomas are extremely rare in the oral cavity. Due to the significant overlap of morphological findings with several benign and malignant soft tissue tumors, especially in the absence of adipocytes, the diagnosis is challenging. We reported the clinicopathological and immunohistochemical features of an uncommon case of a fat-free variant of pleomorphic lipoma in a 48-year-old female presenting clinically as a painless nodule on the buccal mucosa.

Evidence that otoliths, mineral-rich limestone concrescences present in the inner ear of bone fishes, can accelerate bone formation in vivo has been previously reported. The goal of this work was the development, characterization, and evaluation of the cytocompatibility of otoliths-incorporated sodium alginate and gelatin scaffolds. Cynoscion acoupa-derived otoliths were characterized by X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (FRX), particle size, free lime, and weight loss by calcination.
