Article Synopsis
  • Major depressive disorder (MDD) is linked to neuroinflammatory processes involving the NLRP3 inflammasome, and a study examined the impact of the NLRP3 rs10754558 polymorphism on MDD diagnoses among young adults.
  • A population-based study with 1,100 participants found no significant association between the NLRP3 genotype and MDD diagnosis, but a clinical trial showed that individuals with the GG genotype had poorer treatment outcomes compared to those with GC/CC genotypes.
  • Longitudinal analyses indicated that GG individuals experienced less improvement in depressive and anxiety symptoms over time, suggesting that this genotype may affect the effectiveness of psychotherapy for MDD.

Article Synopsis
  • Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a significant global issue, particularly concerning individuals with high-risk factors such as family history, past maltreatment, and socio-economic challenges.
  • A study of 791 young adults examined various protective factors, including education, support systems, spirituality, and family dynamics to understand their impact on resilience to MDD over time.
  • Findings reveal that paternal support notably lowers MDD and suicide attempt risks, and higher resilience correlates with lower depression scores, suggesting a shift towards positive prevention strategies focused on family involvement, especially fathers, is essential.

Article Synopsis
  • This study examined how malocclusion (misalignment of teeth) affects temporomandibular disorders (TMD) and whether sleep bruxism (teeth grinding) mediates this relationship in children aged 7 to 8.
  • Data was gathered from 580 children and analyzed using path analysis, revealing that malocclusion did not directly impact sleep bruxism or TMD pain.
  • Instead, the results indicated a strong connection between probable sleep bruxism and TMD pain, suggesting that bruxism may be a more significant factor than malocclusion in causing TMD complaints.

Objective: To evaluate the effect of psychotherapies on ego defense mechanisms and the reduction of depressive symptoms in a 12-month follow-up period.

Methods: This longitudinal and quasi-experimental study nested within a randomized clinical trial included a clinical sample of adults (18-60 years) diagnosed with major depressive disorder using the Mini-International Neuropsychiatric Interview. Two models of psychotherapy were used: Supportive Expressive Dynamic Psychotherapy (SEDP) and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT).

Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of probable sleep bruxism (SB) in children aged 7-8 years and its association with sleep pattern and the time spent using devices with a screen.

Material And Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted with children from Pelotas, Brazil (n = 556). Parents/caregivers were interviewed and provided demographic/socioeconomic information, children's daily screen time, nighttime tooth grinding or clenching, sleep duration and answered the Biological Rhythms Interview for Assessment in Neuropsychiatry for Kids (BRIAN-K-sleep domain).

Article Synopsis
  • Research explored how temperament traits impact bipolar disorder (BD) and their connection to genetic variations in the CACNA1C gene, particularly in relation to biological sex.
  • A study of 878 Caucasian individuals aged 18-35 in Brazil found that certain temperament traits mediated the relationship between specific genetic polymorphisms and BD, particularly in women.
  • The results suggested that temperament traits function as endophenotypes for BD in females, but no effects were observed in cisgender men, highlighting a sex-specific interaction in the genetic-temperament-BD link.

In this report, we aim to assess the interaction of bipolar disorder and major depressive disorder with the evolution of social roles, economic classification, and substance misuse in emerging adults. This is a longitudinal population-based study ( = 231 at baseline), in which participants were reassessed at a mean of 5 years after baseline. A structured clinical interview was used to diagnose the participants with bipolar disorder and major depression; a control group without mood disorders was included.

Objective: To evaluate the impact of defense mechanisms at baseline on depressive symptoms after brief psychotherapies and after 6-months of follow-up among depressed patients with and without cluster B personality disorders (PDs).

Methods: This quasi-experimental study nested within a randomized clinical trial included a clinical sample of adults (18-60 years) diagnosed with major depressive disorder using the Mini-International Neuropsychiatric Interview. The Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory-III was applied to assess PD, the Defense Style Questionnaire 40 was used to analyze defense mechanisms, and the Beck Depression Inventory was used to measure the severity of depressive symptoms.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the relationship between the COMT Val Met polymorphism and depression among young adults in Pelotas, Brazil, without finding a direct link to depression itself.
  • It reveals that the Met-allele of the Val Met polymorphism significantly affects the impact of childhood trauma on depression risk, specifically in men who experienced trauma.
  • The findings suggest that childhood trauma combined with genetic factors could influence gene regulation related to depression susceptibility, highlighting a complex interplay between genetics and early life experiences in mental health outcomes.

We investigated whether women diagnosed with comorbid bipolar disorder (BD) and premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) experience higher disruptions in biological rhythms in two independent study samples. The first study has a population-based sample of 727 women, including 104 women with PMDD only, 43 women with BD only, 24 women with comorbid PMDD and BD, and 556 women without BD or PMDD (controls). Biological rhythm disruptions were cross-sectionally evaluated using the Biological Rhythms Interview of Assessment in Neuropsychiatry (BRIAN).

Article Synopsis
  • The CACNA1C gene is linked to psychiatric disorders through its role in regulating BDNF levels via calcium channels.
  • The study examined the impact of specific genetic polymorphisms (rs1006737 and rs4765913) on BDNF levels in 641 young adults, focusing on possible differences between sexes.
  • Results showed that these polymorphisms influenced BDNF levels differently in men and women, suggesting gender-specific biological mechanisms that could help explain the link between CACNA1C and psychiatric conditions.

The aim of this paper is to analyse the factors associated with the dropout from brief psychotherapy for adults with major depressive disorder (MDD) treated at a mental health outpatient clinic. This is a randomized clinical trial with two models of psychotherapy: cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and supportive expressive dynamic psychotherapy (SEDP). MDD and anxiety disorders were evaluated through the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview-Plus.

The revised Helping Alliance Questionnaire (HAq-II) is among the most used instruments that measure therapeutic alliance. Despite its use in research, this instrument is not validated for the Brazilian population. The aim of this study was to explore the evidence of validity of the HAq-II based on the internal structure in a sample of Brazilian psychiatric patients.

The aim of this study was to assess the risk factors for new-onset Bipolar Disorder (BD) in a community sample of young adults. This is a prospective cohort study including a population-based sample of young adults aged between 18-24 years. The baseline took place from 2007 to 2009, and 1560 subjects were included.

Article Synopsis
  • Postpartum depression (PPD) significantly impacts many women and is often the first sign of future mood disorders; this study evaluated the effectiveness of preventive cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for PPD.
  • Pregnant women at risk for depression were split into a CBT therapy group and a control group, with results showing a higher prevalence of PPD in the risk group but no significant difference between groups; the OQ-45 scores decreased, indicating improvement during therapy.
  • The study faced limitations, including a high refusal rate for treatment and lack of comparison with another therapy type, but concluded that brief CBT is effective in preventing PPD.
