Nanoemulsions (NEs) possess properties that enhance the solubility, bioavailability and therapeutic efficacy of drugs. Chalcones are compounds known for their antifungal properties. In this study, we evaluated different emulsification techniques to create alginate nanoemulsions containing chalcone (1E,4E)-1,5-bis (4-methoxyphenyl) penta-1,4-dien-3-one (DB4OCH).

Purpose: Swiss Cheese () is an ornamental plant valued for its exotic leaves with openings and for the variety of colors. The technique of controlled exposure to gamma radiation was investigated to induce variegation (color change) in the leaves of this plant.

Materials And Methods: cuttings were irradiated with different doses of radiation with Co gamma rays (0, 1, 5, 10, 15, and 20 Gy) and evaluated for size, color, health, and growth.

  • Marfan syndrome is a connective tissue disorder that is inherited in an autosomal dominant manner, with various clinical presentations; early recognition of its symptoms can lead to better diagnosis and prevention of cardiovascular issues.
  • A study analyzed the clinical profiles of 75 outpatient individuals diagnosed with Marfan syndrome, highlighting a majority being young adults, with many showing a family history of the condition and common manifestations such as skin striae and scoliosis.
  • Despite a significant number of individuals displaying cardiovascular issues like aortic dilation and mitral valve prolapse, most patients did not report severe cardiovascular symptoms, emphasizing the importance of identifying key clinical signs for earlier diagnosis.

Background: The study evaluated the effects of resistance exercise training and açaí supplementation on cardiac parameters in hypertensive animals.

Methods: For this study, rats from the Wistar and SHR lines (spontaneously hypertensive rats) were used. The animals were divided into 5 groups: Wistar Control (C); Control Hypertensive (H); Trained Hypertensive (HT); Hypertensive and Supplemented with Açaí (HA); and Hypertensive Trained and Supplemented with Açaí (HAT).

Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigated how long-term environmental enrichment (EE) affects behavior, neurochemistry, and epigenetics in a mouse model of schizophrenia, which underwent a two-hit process involving a viral mimic and stressors.
  • - Mice exposed to EE showed improvement in sensorimotor gating, working memory, and increased exploratory behaviors, alongside reduced activation of microglial cells and increased markers of neurogenesis in the hippocampus.
  • - The research also found that EE led to demethylation of the serotonin transporter gene, suggesting significant epigenetic changes that may help mitigate behavioral issues associated with the schizophrenia model.

Cumulative trauma is usually devastating and can lead to severe psychological consequences, including posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Exposure to various types of traumas, particularly during childhood, can be even more deleterious than the sheer number of events experienced. This epidemiological study is the first to investigate the impact of discrete childhood traumatic exposure on the risk of developing lifetime PTSD in a representative sample of the general population of the two biggest Brazilian cities.

This study aimed to explore the influence of sound stimulation on heart rate and the potential coupling between cardiac and cerebral activities. Thirty-one participants underwent exposure to periods of silence and two distinct continuous, non-repetitive pure tone stimuli: low pitch (110 Hz) and high pitch (880 Hz). Electroencephalography (EEG) data from electrodes F3, F4, F7, F8, Fp1, Fp2, T3, T4, T5, and T6 were recorded, along with R-R interval data for heart rate.

leaves infusions are relevant in ethnopharmacology for treating colds, coughs, headaches, and asthma. The essential oil chemical composition of a specimen was monthly monitored from October 2021 to July 2022 to evaluate the climatic influences on its yield and chemical composition and antinociceptive, andanti-inflammatory properties. The leaves, collected monthly over a 10-month period, were submitted to hydrodistillation.

Partial substitution of meat with non-protein sources in hybrid meat products generally leads to a decrease in texture attributes and, consequently, in sensory acceptance. In this study, we investigated the effects of transglutaminase (TG) at two concentrations (0.25% and 0.

In the Amazon region, several species of triatomines occur in the natural environments. Among them, species of the genus are a risk to human populations due to their high rates of infection with The aim of this study was to identify the genotypes in specimens and their relationship with sylvatic hosts from different environments in the Brazilian Amazon. A total of 492 triatomines were collected from the municipalities of Monte Negro, Rondônia state, and Humaitá, Amazonas state, 382 of them being nymphs and 110 adults.

Mental fatigue reduces exercise performance through an impaired psychological response such as increased perceived exertion. Carbohydrate (CHO) mouth rinses improve exercise performance and perceived exertion likely due to an improved activation in cerebral reward areas, then we investigated if the CHO mouth rinse-improved exercise performance in mentally fatigued individuals was associated with ameliorated reward-related psychological responses. We hypothesised that CHO mouth rinse would be beneficial for mentally fatigued cyclists mainly in high-metabolic disturbance intensities.

Allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) is an inflammatory skin reaction whose incidence has increased and has been associated with a dietary pattern rich in saturated fats and refined sugars. Considering the increased incidence of ACD and the lack of research about the influence of a short-term high-sugar diet on dermatitis, our aim is to improve understanding of the influence of a high-sugar diet on ACD. We introduced a diet rich in sugar fifteen days before inducing contact dermatitis with oxazolone, in mice, and maintained it until the end of the experiment, which lasted three weeks in total.

Background: /Aims: Epidemiological data show that there is an important relationship between respiratory and intestinal diseases. To improve our understanding on the interconnectedness between the lung and intestinal mucosa and the overlap between respiratory and intestinal diseases, our aim was to investigate the influence of ovalbumin (OVA)-induced allergic airway inflammation on gut homeostasis.

Methods: A/J mice were sensitized and challenged with OVA.

  • Gastrointestinal nematode infections significantly impact small ruminant production, worsened by growing resistance to traditional dewormers.
  • A study focused on the essential oil from Lippia dominguensis, particularly its effects on the eggs and adult forms of the resistant nematode Haemonchus contortus, showing promising results in lab tests.
  • Key components of the oil were identified, and results indicated strong anthelmintic activity with minimal toxicity, supporting the need for further testing in live animals.

Background: It is still very controversial whether the characteristics of pain in the acute myocardial infarction could be related to the culprit coronary artery. There are no data about associations of pain with the ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) and left ventricular (LV) fibrotic segments.

Methods: Data from 328 participants who had STEMI and were included in the B and T Types of Lymphocytes Evaluation in Acute Myocardial Infarction (BATTLE-AMI) study were analyzed.

Background: Implementation of interventions to treat child and adolescent mental health problems in schools could help fill the mental health care gap in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Most of the evidence available come from systematic reviews on mental health prevention and promotion, and there is less evidence on treatment strategies that can be effectively delivered in schools. The aim of this review was to identify what school-based interventions have been tested to treat children and adolescents in LMICs, and how effective they are.
