Endothelial senescence has been suggested to promote endothelial dysfunction in age-related vascular disorders. This study evaluated the prothrombotic properties of senescent endothelial cells (ECs) and the underlying mechanism. Serial passaging from passage (P)1 to P4 (replicative senescence) of porcine coronary artery ECs, or treatment of P1 ECs with the endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) inhibitor L-NAME (premature senescence) induced acquisition of markers of senescence including increased senescence-associated-β-galactosidase (SA-β-gal) activity and p53, p21, p16 expression.

Milk protein-based formulas containing different oils affect fatty acids balance in term infants: A randomized blinded crossover clinical trial.

Background: Palm olein is used in infant formula fat blends in order to match the fatty acid profile of human milk. While the effects on fatty acid balance have been evaluated, the use of palm olein in combination with palm kernel oil and supplementation with docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and arachidonic acid (ARA) has not been similarly assessed in infants. This study evaluated the effects of infant formulas containing different fat compositions on the balance of fat, fatty acids, and calcium.

Procedures and compliance of a video modeling applied behavior analysis intervention for Brazilian parents of children with autism spectrum disorders.

Video modeling using applied behavior analysis techniques is one of the most promising and cost-effective ways to improve social skills for parents with autism spectrum disorder children. The main objectives were: (1) To elaborate/describe videos to improve eye contact and joint attention, and to decrease disruptive behaviors of autism spectrum disorder children, (2) to describe a low-cost parental training intervention, and (3) to assess participant's compliance. This is a descriptive study of a clinical trial for autism spectrum disorder children.

Targeting personalized medicine in a non-Hodgkin lymphoma patient with 18F-FDG and 18F-choline PET/CT.

Early diagnosis and staging of non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) is essential for therapeutic strategy decision. Positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) with fluordeoxyglucose (FDG), a glucose analogue, labeled with fluor-18 (18F-FDG) has been used to evaluate staging, therapy response and prognosis in NHL patients. However, in some cases, 18F-FDG has shown false-positive uptake due to inflammatory reaction after chemo and/or radiation therapy.

Effects of treadmill training with load addition on non-paretic lower limb on gait parameters after stroke: A randomized controlled clinical trial.

The addition of load on the non-paretic lower limb for the purpose of restraining this limb and stimulating the use of the paretic limb has been suggested to improve hemiparetic gait. However, the results are conflicting and only short-term effects have been observed. This study aims to investigate the effects of adding load on non-paretic lower limb during treadmill gait training as a multisession intervention on kinematic gait parameters after stroke.

Background/aims: Autonomic nervous system imbalance is associated with metabolic diseases, including diabetes. Glibenclamide is an antidiabetic drug that acts by stimulating insulin secretion from pancreatic beta cells and is widely used in the treatment of type 2 diabetes. Since there is scarce data concerning autonomic nervous system activity and diabetes, the aim of this work was to test whether glibenclamide can improve autonomic nervous system activity and muscarinic acetylcholine receptor function in pre-diabetic obese male rats.

Goals: We studied the prevalence and predictors of small-intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) in Crohn's disease (CD) outpatients and the relationship between SIBO and intestinal and/or systemic inflammation.

Background: The relationship of SIBO with systemic and intestinal inflammation in CD patients is unclear.

Study: In this cross-sectional study, conducted between June, 2013 and January, 2015, 92 CD patients and 97 controls with nonchronic gastrointestinal complaints were assessed for the presence of SIBO using the H2/CH4 glucose breath test.

The effects of dehydroepiandrosterone on sexual function: a systematic review.

Objective: Faced with the growing interest about the action of dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) and its benefits, as well as the negative impacts that sexual dysfunctions have on people's quality of life, this systematic review was undertaken with the objective of evaluating the effect of DHEA use on aspects of sexual function.

Method: An electronic search was conducted in the databases of PubMed, ISI Web of Science and Virtual Health Library (VHL) combining the terms 'DHEA treatment' and 'DHEA use' with terms such as 'sexual dysfunction', 'sexual frequency' and 'libido'. No limits on time and language were imposed.

Background: Work related musculoskeletal disorders (WRMSDs) constitute a serious occupational health problem among registered nurses (RN) all around the world. Its prevalence is mainly associated with nurses' high physical demands that still remain poorly studied in primary health care (PHC).

Genetically modified (GM) cotton plants that effectively control cotton boll weevil (CBW), which is the most destructive cotton insect pest in South America, are reported here for the first time. Pythium insidiosum is an important oomycete due to its ability to infect humans and animals. It causes pythiosis, a disease of difficult treatment that occurs more frequently in humans in Thailand and in horses in Brazil. Since cell-wall components are frequently related to host shifts, we decided here to use sequences from the exo-1,3-β-glucanase gene (exo1), which encodes an immunodominant protein putatively involved in cell wall remodeling, to investigate the microevolutionary relationships of Brazilian and Thai isolates of P.

Characterization of GlobalFiler loci in Angolan and Guinean populations inhabiting Southern Portugal.

We analyzed the GlobalFiler short tandem repeat (STR) loci for 152 and 70 unrelated individuals from Angolan and Guinean immigrant populations inhabiting Southern Portugal, respectively. After Bonferroni correction, no significant deviations from the Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium and linkage disequilibrium were detected for either population. For the Angolan population, SE33 was the most informative marker.
