ATLANTIC-PRIMATES: a dataset of communities and occurrences of primates in the Atlantic Forests of South America.

Primates play an important role in ecosystem functioning and offer critical insights into human evolution, biology, behavior, and emerging infectious diseases. There are 26 primate species in the Atlantic Forests of South America, 19 of them endemic. We compiled a dataset of 5,472 georeferenced locations of 26 native and 1 introduced primate species, as hybrids in the genera Callithrix and Alouatta.

This research aims to assess air quality in a transitional location between city and forest in the Amazon region. Located downwind of the Manaus metropolitan region, this study is part of the large-scale experiment GoAmazon2014/5. Based on their pollutant potential, inhalable particulate matter (PM), nitrogen dioxide (NO), sulfur dioxide (SO), ozone (O), hydrogen sulfide (HS), benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and meta-, orto-, para-xylene (BTEX) were selected for analysis.

Quadriceps tendon rupture is a rare lesion, occurring most frequently in males older than 60 yrs after a fall or trauma and associated with systemic diseases and risk factors. Bilateral injury is even more uncommon and disabling. The authors report a case of spontaneous bilateral quadriceps tendon rupture, nonsimultaneous (8 days apart), in a healthy 54-yr-old black male mason, that may be work related.

Chagas disease (CD) is recognized as one of the major neglected global tropical diseases. Benznidazole (BNZ) is the drug of choice for the treatment of adults, young infants, and newborns with CD. However, the pharmacokinetics (PK) of BNZ have been poorly evaluated in all age groups, with consequent gaps in knowledge about PK-pharmacodynamic relationships in CD.

Release mechanisms of urinary tract antibiotics when mixed with bioabsorbable polyesters.

In depth knowledge of the thermal properties of drugs is particularly important when they are designed for incorporation into a thermoplastic polymer matrix. In this paper a representative set of Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) antibiotics were studied using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and then blended via solvent-casting method with poly(D,L-lactide-co-ε-caprolactone). Of these, amoxicillin, cefdinir, levofloxacin and norfloxacin showed a co-continuous morphology with the polyester, whereas blends with ciprofloxacin, nitrofurantoin and tobramycin resulted in two immiscible phases.

Metallic vs plastic stents to treat biliary stricture after liver transplantation: a systematic review and meta-analysis based on randomized trials.

 The first-line approach to anastomotic biliary stricture after orthotopic liver transplantation (OLTX) involves endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP). The most widely used technique is placement of multiple plastic stents, but discussions are ongoing on the benefits of fully-covered self-expandable metallic stents (FCEMS) in this situation. This study aimed to compare results from use of plastic and metal stents to treat biliary stricture after transplantation.

In the 21st century, severe droughts associated with climate change will increase biomass burning (BB) in Brazil caused by the human activities. Recent droughts, especially in 2005, 2010, and 2015, caused strong socioeconomic and environmental impacts. The 2015 drought considered the most severe since 1901, surpassed the 2005 and 2010 events in respect to area and duration.

Association between sense of coherence and untreated dental caries in preschoolers: a cross-sectional study.

Objective: The aim of the present study was to evaluate factors associated with the clinical consequences of untreated dental caries in children attending public and private preschools.

Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted with a complex, preschool-based sample of 769 children, 5 years of age, from public and private preschools in the city of Campina Grande, Brazil. Clinical examinations to diagnose the consequences of untreated caries were performed using the criteria of the pufa index (p - pulp exposure; u - ulceration caused by movement of tooth fragments; f - fistula; a - abscess).

This technical note describes a new microfluidic sensor that combines low-cost (USD $0.97) with rapid fabrication and user-friendly, fast, sensitive, and accurate quantification of a breast cancer biomarker. Background: Obesity is a disease that is highly prevalent in Brazil, and the associated comorbidities represent a major global public health challenge. Botulinum toxin type A (BTX-A) is a potent neurotoxin and inhibitor of gastric smooth muscle activity. In theory, BTX-A administration should promote early satiety and weight loss because it delays gastric emptying by inhibiting acetylcholine-mediated peristalsis, which is primarily responsible for gastric motility.

Background: The use of bougies and balloons to dilate benign esophageal strictures (BES) is a consolidated procedure. However, the amount of evidence available in scientific literature supporting which is the best technique is very low, despite the great prevalence and importance of such pathology. This systematic review with meta-analysis aims at comparing both techniques, providing good quality of evidence.

The influence of surface microbial diversity and succession on microbiologically influenced corrosion of steel in a simulated marine environment.

To explore how a succession of bacteria grown on steel coupons in a marine environment can influence their corrosion process, we designed a microcosm in laboratory to evaluate corrosion kinetics and microbial diversity over 30 days. The results described a clear influence of corrosion by a succession of different bacterial groups. During the initial period, 2-7 days, a sharp increase in the rate of corrosion was detected accompanied by the presence of Alteromonadaceae, Vibrionaceae, Oceanospirillaceae, Rhodobacteraceae, Rhodospirillaceae and Flavobacteriaceae bacteria families.

In Drosophila courtship, males primarily use visual cues to orient toward and follow females and to select the ipsilateral wing for courtship song. Although oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) presents great mortality and morbidity worldwide, the mechanisms behind its clinical behavior remain unclear. Biomarkers are needed to forecast patients' survival and, among those patients undergoing curative therapy, which are more likely to develop tumor recurrence/metastasis. Demonstrating clinical relevance of these biomarkers could be crucial both for surveillance and in helping to establish adjuvant therapy strategies.

Glucose is an essential metabolic substrate for all mammalian cells, and its availability in the circulation is carefully controlled to avoid wide variations. Periodontal therapy and endothelial function in coronary artery disease: A randomized controlled trial.

Objective: To assess the effects of periodontal treatment on endothelial function in patients with coronary artery disease.

Materials And Methods: A randomized controlled trial was conducted with 69 patients with stable coronary disease and severe periodontitis. The test group received nonsurgical periodontal therapy consisting of personalized oral hygiene instructions, subgingival scaling, and root planing per quadrant, whereas the control group received equal treatment after the study period.

This study analyzes the factors contributing to the duration of severe oral mucositis in oncopediatric patients. A longitudinal study was conducted in the pediatric department of a cancer referral hospital between 2013 and 2017. Seventy-three patients diagnosed with cancer undergoing chemotherapy protocols were analyzed.

It is known that sarcopenia is a multifaceted phenomenon, which involves genetic, nutritional, hormonal and living habits aspects. Then, an integrated analysis, as a multivariate approach, could improve the comprehension about the determinants of sarcopenic state in old adults. HTLV-1 and -2 in a first-time blood donor population in Northeastern Brazil: Prevalence, molecular characterization, and evidence of intrafamilial transmission.

Independent epidemiology for respective human T-cell lymphotropic virus (HTLV) types 1 and 2 is little known in blood donors in Brazil, where screening for HTLV-1/2 is mandatory at blood banks, but no testing to confirm/differentiate these viruses. Therefore, this study aims to assess the prevalence of HTLV-1 and -2 in a first-time blood donor population in Northeastern Brazil and to carry out molecular characterization of respective isolates.
