Article Synopsis
  • Noncentrosymmetric two-dimensional superconductors like few-layer T_{d}-MoTe_{2} exhibit unique superconducting properties, including upper critical fields exceeding the Pauli limit by up to 600%.
  • The enhancement of these properties is still debated, with theories suggesting influences from either spin-orbit parity coupling or tilted Ising spin-orbit coupling.
  • In bilayer T_{d}-MoTe_{2}, experiments show superconductivity has a twofold symmetry influenced by magnetic and electric fields, and findings support tilted Ising spin-orbit coupling as the main mechanism.

Objectives: The original STONE score was designed to predict the presence of uncomplicated renal colic and the corresponding absence of alternate serious etiologies. It was retrospectively derived and prospectively validated and resulted in five variables: Sex (male gender), Timing (acute onset of pain), "Origin" (non-Black race), Nausea/vomiting (present), and Erythrocytes (microscopic hematuria). With recent increased awareness of the potential adverse impacts of including race (a socially constructed identity) in clinical prediction rules, we sought to determine if a revised STONE score without race could be constructed with similar diagnostic accuracy.

Purpose: As part of the 100,000 Genomes Project, we set out to assess the potential viability and clinical impact of reporting genetic variants associated with drug-induced toxicity for patients with cancer recruited for whole-genome sequencing (WGS) as part of a genomic medicine service.

Methods: Germline WGS from 76,805 participants was analyzed for pharmacogenetic (PGx) variants in four genes (, , , ) associated with toxicity induced by five drugs used in cancer treatment (capecitabine, fluorouracil, mercaptopurine, thioguanine, irinotecan). Linking genomic data with prescribing and hospital incidence records, a phenome-wide association study (PheWAS) was performed to identify whether phenotypes indicative of adverse drug reactions (ADRs) were enriched in drug-exposed individuals with the relevant PGx variants.

Identification of high carotenoid germplasm is crucial to assist breeders in provitamin-A biofortification of sorghum (Sorghum bicolor [L.] Moench). High-performance liquid chromatography is the gold standard for carotenoid quantification, however, it is not feasible for large scale phenotyping due to its high cost and low throughput.

Undesired coupling to the surrounding environment destroys long-range correlations in quantum processors and hinders coherent evolution in the nominally available computational space. This noise is an outstanding challenge when leveraging the computation power of near-term quantum processors. It has been shown that benchmarking random circuit sampling with cross-entropy benchmarking can provide an estimate of the effective size of the Hilbert space coherently available.

The aim of this study was to examine the possession (very low, low, high, and very high), team formation (3-5-2 and 4-3-3) and position (centre-backs, full-backs, centre midfielders, attacking midfielders, and centre forwards) on match load across two consecutive seasons in elite soccer. Twenty-seven English Premier League outfield players were recruited. Data was monitored through an 18 Hz Global Positioning System and a 25 Hz semi-automated camera tracking system, respectively, and all variables were analysed per minute.

African American men face chronic illness earlier in life and earlier death due to higher severity of illness and poor control of chronic diseases than their white male counterparts. Preexposure and post-exposure prophylaxis PrEP and PREP have improved the odds of survival among those living with HIV. However, the anti-retroviral treatments, though effective, are only as effective as early prevention and detection and in cases where patients can adhere to treatment regimens.

Introduction: According to the PRISMA guidelines, this systematic review of randomized controlled trials examined whether Panax ginseng supplementation reduces resistance to exercise-induced muscle damage (EIMD).

Evidence Acquisition: Web of Science, SPORTDiscus and Medline databases were searched from the 16 of December 2021 to the 18 of February 2022. Inclusion criteria were studies in humans consuming Panax ginseng that employed resistance training as the damaging muscle protocol and measured markers implicated in the etiology of EIMD (muscle damage, muscle function and muscle soreness).

Molecular breast imaging (MBI) is one of several options available to patients seeking supplemental screening due to mammographically dense breasts. Patient experience during MBI may influence willingness to undergo the test but has yet to be formally assessed. We aimed to assess patient comfort level during MBI, to compare MBI comfort with mammography comfort, to identify factors associated with MBI discomfort, and to evaluate patients' willingness to return for future MBI.

Hexasomes are non-canonical nucleosomes that package DNA with six instead of eight histones. First discovered 40 years ago as a consequence of transcription, two near-atomic-resolution cryo-EM structures of the hexasome in complex with the chromatin remodeler INO80 have now started to unravel its mechanistic impact on the regulatory landscape of chromatin. Loss of one histone H2A-H2B dimer converts inactive nucleosomes into distinct and favorable substrates for ATP-dependent chromatin remodeling.

Manipulating the polarization of light at the nanoscale is key to the development of next-generation optoelectronic devices. This is typically done via waveplates using optically anisotropic crystals, with thicknesses on the order of the wavelength. Here, using a novel ultrafast electron-beam-based technique sensitive to transient near fields at THz frequencies, we observe a giant anisotropy in the linear optical response in the semimetal WTe and demonstrate that one can tune the THz polarization using a 50 nm thick film, acting as a broadband wave plate with thickness 3 orders of magnitude smaller than the wavelength.

A single photodetector with tunable detection wavelengths and polarization sensitivity can potentially be harnessed for diverse optical applications ranging from imaging and sensing to telecommunications. Such a device will require the combination of multiple material systems with different structures, band gaps, and photoelectrical responses, which is extremely difficult to engineer using traditional epitaxial films. Here, we develop a multifunctional and high-performance photosensor using all van der Waals materials.

Different mechanisms driving a linear temperature dependence of the resistivity ∼ at van Hove singularities (VHSs) or metal-insulator transitions when doping a Mott insulator are being debated intensively with competing theoretical proposals. We experimentally investigate this using the exceptional tunability of twisted bilayer (TB) WSe by tracking the parameter regions where linear-in- resistivity is found in dependency of displacement fields, filling, and magnetic fields. We find that even when the VHSs are tuned rather far away from the half-filling point and the Mott insulating transition is absent, the -linear resistivity persists at the VHSs.

Understanding universal aspects of quantum dynamics is an unresolved problem in statistical mechanics. In particular, the spin dynamics of the one-dimensional Heisenberg model were conjectured as to belong to the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) universality class based on the scaling of the infinite-temperature spin-spin correlation function. In a chain of 46 superconducting qubits, we studied the probability distribution of the magnetization transferred across the chain's center, [Formula: see text].

When performing mechanical thrombectomy for stroke patients, some physicians use balloon guide catheters (BGCs) in order to achieve flow reversal and thereby improve reperfusion quality. There is substantial evidence favoring the use of BGCs to improve reperfusion rates and clinical outcomes for thrombectomy patients; however, as we will outline in this review, there is also evidence that BGCs do not achieve reliable flow reversal in many circumstances. Therefore, if we are able to modify our techniques to improve the likelihood of flow reversal during thrombectomy maneuvers, we may be able to further improve reperfusion quality and clinical outcomes.

Localized states in two-dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) have been the subject of intense study, driven by potential applications in quantum information science. Despite the rapidly growing knowledge surrounding these emitters, their microscopic nature is still not fully understood, limiting their production and application. Motivated by this challenge, and by recent theoretical and experimental evidence showing that nanowrinkles generate strain-localized room-temperature emitters, we demonstrate a method to intentionally induce wrinkles with collections of stressors, showing that long-range wrinkle direction and position are controllable with patterned array design.

Employing flux-grown single crystal WSe_{2}, we report charge-carrier scattering behaviors measured in h-BN encapsulated monolayer field effect transistors. We observe a nonmonotonic change of transport mobility as a function of hole density in the degenerately doped sample, which can be explained by energy dependent scattering amplitude of strong defects calculated using the T-matrix approximation. Utilizing long mean-free path (>500  nm), we also demonstrate the high quality of our electronic devices by showing quantized conductance steps from an electrostatically defined quantum point contact, showing the potential for creating ultrahigh quality quantum optoelectronic devices based on atomically thin semiconductors.

TRF2 is a component of shelterin, a telomere-specific protein complex that protects the ends of mammalian chromosomes from DNA damage signaling and improper repair. TRF2 functions as a homodimer and its interaction with telomeric DNA has been studied, but its full-length DNA-binding properties are unknown. This study examines TRF2's interaction with single-DNA strands and focuses on the conformation of the TRF2-DNA complex and TRF2's preference for DNA chirality.
