Article Synopsis
  • Obesity is linked to a disrupted gut microbiome due to high-fat diets, causing conditions like insulin resistance and NASH.
  • In a study with mice, those on high-fat diets showed significant health issues, while treatment with Broncho-Vaxom® (OM-85) prevented obesity and improved gut health.
  • The findings suggest that immune modulators like OM-85 can positively impact metabolism and gut microbiome composition, indicating potential for new obesity therapies.

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and its development into nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) are challenging health concerns globally. Clinically, the prevalence and severity of NAFLD/NASH are higher in men than in premenopausal women. NAFLD is strongly correlated with obesity, both of which are tied to high-fat/fructose-rich western diets.

Feeding on mixed, alternating, or changing diets often favor insect development. With the aim to optimize mass rearing and use for the biological control of insect pests, we investigated the effects of various combinations of high-quality (the green peach aphid ) and low-quality (eggs of the grain moth ) foods on the larval development of a predatory ladybird In the first experiment, eggs and aphids were mixed in different proportions; in the second experiment, larvae switched from feeding on aphids to feeding on eggs. Although the beneficial additive effect of mixed foods was detected in some treatments with limited diets, feeding on various combinations of eggs with aphids never resulted in higher survival, faster development, or a larger size of emerging adults than those observed for feeding on unlimited amounts of aphids.

Objective: Substance use (SU) is common among adolescents and young adults, including those experiencing early psychosis. Coordinated Specialty Care (CSC), a community-based multidisciplinary team-based service model, is increasingly used to support people experiencing first-episode psychosis. In addition to prescribers, clinicians, and vocational specialists, CSC includes peer support specialists who use their own living/lived experience with mental health and treatment to engage and support young people with their recovery goals.

Long-term storage is an important component of insect mass-rearing systems, prolonging the shelf life of biocontrol agents during a low-demand period or a temporary lack of suitable food. is a predatory heteropteran, mass-reared and widely used for the biological control of arthropod pests in greenhouses. With the aim to determine the optimal conditions and acceptable duration of cold storage, we evaluated the impact of different periods of storage of fed and starved third instar nymphs of at different temperatures on nymphal survival, adult emergence, and female fecundity.

The protein, N-myc downstream-regulated gene 2 (NDRG2), a tumor suppressor, is significantly decreased or absent in many types of cancer. There is a significant negative correlation between the levels of NDRG2 and the development and progression of cancer tumor recurrence and tumor invasion, in different cancers. In contrast, the and overexpression of the NDRG2 protein decreases the proliferation, growth, adhesion and migration of many types of cancer cells.

Although there have been momentous and critical advancements in serious mental illness (SMI) psychology doctoral training models and competencies, there is still much systemic change needed to increase access to evidence-based SMI training for psychologists. In the last decade, there has been little to no growth or expansion of SMI training opportunities in clinical psychology doctoral programs in the United States, and psychologists are underrepresented in serving clients with SMI. As trainees and trainers committed to careers in SMI, the contributors aimed to identify barriers and facilitators throughout each stage of the SMI doctoral training pathway, including pregraduate school, graduate school, and internship to reflect critically on systemic issues that have impeded trainees from accessing the appropriate tools for SMI training.

Coordinated specialty care (CSC) is the dominant model for early psychosis care in the United States, representing a proactive recovery-oriented approach to serious mental illness in its early stages. CSC involves broad multidisciplinary support for participants, including from psychologists in some CSC teams, encompassing educational and vocational support, medication management, psychotherapy, case management, peer support, and family interventions. CSC programs have proliferated in the last 20 years, leading to a quality-access dialectic, where increasing access to treatment simultaneously prompts concerns about care quality, particularly in the context of staffing shortages and funding limits.

Intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) is associated with increased risk of cardiometabolic disease later in life and has been shown to affect female and male offspring differently, but the mechanisms remain unclear. The purpose of this study was to identify proteomic differences and metabolic risk markers in IUGR male and female neonates when compared to appropriate for gestational age (AGA) babies that will provide a better understanding of IUGR pathogenesis and its associated risks. Our results revealed alterations in IUGR cord plasma proteomes with most of the differentially abundant proteins implicated in peroxisome pathways.

Article Synopsis
  • Alzheimer's disease (AD) involves memory decline and cognitive impairment, often linked to neuroinflammation, amyloid plaques, and tau tangles.
  • A novel molecule, T-ALZ01, targets neuroinflammation by inhibiting the complement protein C1r, significantly reducing inflammatory cytokines like IL-6 and TNF-α in a lab model.
  • The study highlights the effectiveness of using exosomes for delivering T-ALZ01 across the blood-brain barrier, leading to decreased neuron degeneration and reduced microglial and astrocytic activation, suggesting T-ALZ01 may be a promising treatment for neuroinflammatory disorders like AD.

Research suggests that 60-70% of adolescents detained in the juvenile justice system meet criteria for a mental health disorder compared to 20% of the general adolescent population; however, the vast majority do not receive services. Unfortunately, mental health symptoms often worsen during detainment, and detainment is linked to lower levels of educational attainment and increased risk of adult recidivism. Thus, not only are these adolescents unlikely to receive needed mental health care, but also the lack of interventions in detention may exacerbate inequities of contact with the criminal justice system in adulthood.

Babies born to severe acute respiratory syndrome corona virus-2 (SARS-CoV-2)-infected mothers are at greater risk for perinatal morbidity and more likely to receive a neurodevelopmental diagnosis in the first year of life. However, the effect of maternal infection on placental function and neonatal outcomes varies depending upon the patient population. We set out to test our hypothesis that maternal SARS-CoV-2 infection in our underserved, socioeconomically disadvantaged, mostly unvaccinated, predominantly African American and Latina population in the Bronx, NY would have effects evident at birth.
