  In his 2016 article published in this journal, Dr. William Winters described Selma and Lois DeBakey as "icons of medical communication" who believed that "nothing hinders communication as much as words, when they are used badly or incorrectly." This article bookends Winters' description by explaining how Selma and Lois DeBakey were also "icons of medical preservation" who asked, "Shall we nourish the biomedical archives as a viable and indispensable source of information, or shall we bury their ashes and lose a century or more of consequential scientific history?" In addressing this question posed by Selma and Lois DeBakey and spotlighting their answers in their own engaging words, we highlight the relevance of their advocacy for the medical humanities and its influence to inform humanistic approaches to science and medicine.

The mitochondrial enzyme SIRT3 is an NAD-dependent deacetylase important in cell metabolism, and a decline in its protein expression or activity has been linked with insulin resistance in obesity, ageing and type 2 diabetes. The naked mole-rat's (Heterocephalus glaber) social and subterranean lifestyle imposes several evolutionary pressures which have shaped its physiology. One example is low oxygen availability in a crowded burrow system which the naked mole-rat has adapted to via several mechanisms. Here we describe a metabolic rewiring which enables the naked mole-rat to switch substrates in glycolysis from glucose to fructose thereby circumventing feedback inhibition at phosphofructokinase (PFK1) to allow unrestrained glycolytic flux and ATP supply under hypoxia.

Naked mole-rats are extremely tolerant to low concentrations of oxygen (hypoxia) and high concentrations of carbon dioxide (hypercapnia), which is consistent with the environment that they inhabit. Naked mole-rats combine subterranean living with living in very densely populated colonies where oxygen becomes depleted and carbon dioxide accumulates. In the laboratory, naked mole-rats fully recover from 5 h exposure to 5% O and 5 h exposure to 80% CO, whereas both conditions are rapidly lethal to similarly sized laboratory mice.

The National Children's Study Cognitive Health Domain Team developed detailed plans for assessing cognition longitudinally from infancy to early adulthood. These plans identify high-priority aspects of cognition that can be measured efficiently and effectively, and we believe they can serve as a model for future large-scale longitudinal research. For infancy and toddlerhood, we proposed several paradigms that collectively allowed us to assess six broad cognitive constructs: (1) executive function skills, (2) episodic memory, (3) language, (4) processing speed, (5) spatial and numerical processing, and (6) social cognition.

This article illustrates the value and impact of collaboration among scholars, archivists, and librarians working across universities and government institutions, and how changes in medium-from a born-physical photograph and printed postcard to a digital reproduction to a simultaneously born-digital and printed book-create new possibilities for scholarly analysis, interpretation, and dissemination, which in turn suggest future directions for research and engagement across fields of inquiry. In doing so, this article argues that history matters by illuminating past networks that, through humanistic inquiry, continue to connect people, ideas, and institutions in the present and into the future.

Much of the current research concerning autism spectrum disorder (ASD) focuses on early identification of behaviors that may indicate future deficits or higher risk for a later diagnosis. Additionally, there exists a strong claim regarding the dimensional nature of ASD, such that even among non-diagnosed individuals, a continuous distribution of symptom severity can be observed. Executive function (EF) has been widely studied in children, adolescents, and adults with ASD, with a robust body of research supporting widespread EF deficits in diagnosed individuals.

Intelligence is an important individual difference factor related to mental health, academic achievement, and life success, yet there is a lack of research into its early cognitive predictors. This study investigated the predictive value of infant developmental assessment scores for school-age intelligence in a large, heterogeneous sample of single- and twin-born subjects (N = 521). We found that Early Learning Composite (ELC) scores from the Mullen Scales of Early Learning have similar predictive power to that of other infant tests.
