Hereditary ectodermal dysplasia is an inherited disorder characterized by aplasia or dysplasia of ectodermal tissues, such as hair, nails, teeth, and skin, that occurs in approximately 1 in every 100,000 live births. Dental abnormalities and abnormal facial appearance are of major concern in childhood and adolescence, since they can restrict the individual socially and affect his or her self-confidence. Oral rehabilitation in the early stages of the patient's life may provide functional and esthetic restoration as well as safeguard psychologic health.

The method is based on the reaction of aldehydes with 4-hydrazinobenzoic acid (HBA) to give the corresponding hydrazones with maximum absorbance at 290 nm. Under optimized CE conditions, the HBA derivatives of four carbonyls (formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, propionaldehyde, and acrolein) were completely separated from one another, in less than 6 min, using a pH 9.

The oxo derivatives ('cathinones') were in general less active as MAO-A inhibitors than the corresponding arylisopropylamines, but exhibited an interesting MAO-B inhibiting activity, which was absent in the hydroxy, methoxy, and beta-unsubstituted analogues. These results suggest that selective affinity for the two MAO isoforms in this family of compounds is modulated not only by the aryl substitution pattern but also by the side-chain substituents on the arylalkylamine scaffold.

Sixteen healthy adult mixed-breed dogs, seven males and nine females, weighing 10-15 kg were used. The dogs were randomly assigned to one of two groups composed of eight animals anesthetized with sevoflurane (SEVO) or desflurane (DESF).

The 13C NMR of two solvatochromic dyes derived from a barbituric acid acceptor and dimethylaminophenyl donor fragments, compound 1 and the related merocyanine 2, were recorded in various solvents. The observed chemical-shift variations were used to interpret their structural differences and solvatochromic behavior in solution.

Unlabelled: Historically, the dorsal arterial system of the hand received less attention than the palmar system. The studies concerning dorsal arterial anatomy present some controversies regarding the origin and presence of the dorsal metacarpal artery branches. Knowledge of the anatomy of dorsal metacarpal arteries is especially applied in the surgical planning for flaps taken from the dorsum of the hand.

This is a qualitative research with the following objectives: (1) to understand how mothers with a child in hospital identify the nurse as well as other components of the nursing Staff (technicians and assistants) and (2) to learn about their perceptions about the care provided by the nursing staff. Eight mothers with a child hospitalized were individually interviewed.

These were examined as P-site inhibitors of adenylyl cyclase. The presence of fluorine on the purine ring increased potency of inhibition, and the most potent compound, beta-2',5'-dideoxy-2-fluoroadenosine (1b), was 3 times more potent than beta-2',5'-dideoxyadenosine.

A convenient synthesis of 2'-deoxy-2-fluoroadenosine from commercially available 2-fluoroadenine is described. The coupling reaction of silylated 2-fluoroadenine with phenyl 3,5-bis[O-(t-butyldimethylsilyl)]-2-deoxy-1-thio-D-erythro-pentofuranoside gave the corresponding 2-fluoro-2'-deoxyadenosine derivative (alpha/beta = 1:1) in good yield. The alpha- and beta-anomers were separated by chromatography, and then desilylated to give compounds 1a and 1b.

The preparation of a humic acid modified carbon paste electrode (HA-MCPE) as well as the behavior of its surface as complexing agent toward Cu2+ cations are described. Electrochemical studies of the reduction of the complexed cations and of the anodic stripping oxidation of the resulting copper are outlined. The anodic stripping current was correlated to the Cu2+ concentrations.

The possibility of applying thin layer chromatography (TLC) detection for the analysis of pesticide residues in tomatoes was investigated. Samples of tomatoes that have never been treated with pesticide were fortified with atrazine, carbaryl, carbofuran, chloroxuron, diuron, dimethoate, imazalil, oxamyl and methamidophos. The samples were extracted, cleaned-up by gel permeation chromatography and then applied on silica gel plates.

We measured the effects in vitro of pure and commercial pesticides on Ca(2+)-activated ATPase and cholinesterase (ChE) activities in the nervous system of the slug Phyllocaulis soleiformis. The pesticides used in this study included carbamate and organophosphates, which acts as reversible and irreversible anticholinesterases, respectively. Both enzymes were insensitive to pure carbofuran (1 mM), glyphosate (1 mM) and malathion (120 microM).

Six interviews were held with the mothers and analyzed according to the themes. The factors that support the accompanying mother are: count on presence of other family members (mainly the child's father), the possibility of free meals at the hospital; trust the hospital team and being heeded by this team.

This type of policy is considered implicitly capable of developing a sequence of strategic wagers: (1) release of financial resources for payment of bonuses; (2) creation of an operationally feasible and sensitive evaluation instrument; (3) creation of adequate management mechanisms to improve evaluation policy; (4) employee adherence to the hospital upgrading policy based on the bonus system; and (5) maintenance of the effects of evaluation policy over time. The article discusses the "degree of success" of each of these wagers in an attempt to portray possible gains throughout the process, while also identifying inherent difficulties in such a policy.

The HOMO energies and the charges on the aromatic carbons of two sets of MAO-A-inhibiting phenylisopropylamines, one containing 4-amino substituents, were calculated by the AM1 method, in order to evaluate the importance of charge-transfer interactions between drug and enzyme. Multiple-linear regressions of the pIC50 values on the calculated descriptors were performed with 33 compounds from the two sets, and separately with each set. A poor correlation was obtained when the two sets were merged, as a result of opposing trends shown by the two separate sets.

Breast-feeding is a complex human behavior that contributes to the reduction of infantile morbidity and mortality indices. Recently undertaken research are being achieved focussing on real-life breast-feeding from the fostress' point of view; these studies are showing this experience to often be quite painful both physically and psychologically. The health professional must be prepared to take care of these fostresses, including the ability to communicate with them.

The synthesis of monocaprin, monolaurin, and monomyristin in a solvent-free system was conducted by mixing a commercial immobilized lipase with the organic reactants (glycerol and fatty acids) in a 20-mL batch reactor with constant stirring. The effects of temperature, fatty acid/glycerol molar ratio, and enzyme concentration on the reaction conversion were determined. The addition of molecular sieves in the assays of monomyristin synthesis was also evaluated.

The present study focuses on the analysis of two vermicomposts, that have been used as alternative sources of restitution of soil organic matter, as well as sources of nutrient replacements. For this purpose, two samples of vermicomposts from different Brazilian regions (São Carlos-SP and Londrina-PR) were characterized according to their humic acid content. Both samples had a pH value near 7.

The preparation and the solvatochromic behavior of two dyes, obtained by condensation of N,N'-dimethylbarbituric acid with dimethylaminobenzaldehyde and with 4,4'-bis(N,N-dimethylamino)benzophenone (Michler's ketone) are described. The latter dye is rather sensitive to the polarity of the medium, and in particular, to the hydrogen-bond-donor ability of protic solvents. The solvatochromism of both compounds is discussed in terms of the pi* and E(T)(30) solvent polarity scales and their differences in behavior interpreted with the aid of semiempirical calculations.

However, researches during the 90.s, performed by nurses, have shown that this focus is iatrogenic: milk becoming more important than people (the mothers in this case) and that the fortresses must be seen as persons who are breastfeeding (or trying to do so).
