Diagnostic and Prognostic Challenges of Oral Melanoma in Dogs: A Literature Review and 2 Case Studies.

Oral melanoma is the most common maxillofacial malignancy in dogs. A unique characteristic of melanoma is its ability to mimic other oral tumors, which makes it one of the most challenging oral tumors to diagnose, especially since 30% to 40% of cases are amelanotic. This article presents 2 case reports of dogs with amelanotic oral melanoma that were both diagnostically challenging.

Clinical Instructor Perceptions of Preparedness, Performance, and Professionalism of Doctor of Physical Therapy Students from a 2-Year Hybrid Program: A Mixed Methods Study.

Objective: Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) education models vary in length, philosophy, and delivery. The purpose of this study was to explore clinical instructor (CI) perceptions of performance in DPT students from a 2-year hybrid program.

Methods: In this mixed methods phenomenological study, data from eight cohorts of students were examined.

An older man with progressive short-term memory loss and confusion.

A 72-year-old man with progressive memory loss and confusion presented to a neurology clinic for evaluation. He initially had difficulty remembering names and misplaced objects; however, his memory deficits had progressed, and more recently he had numerous car accidents and difficulty managing his own medications and finances. Cognitive testing revealed significant memory deficits reflecting moderate-stage dementia, and his brain MRI showed several cortical microbleeds and an area of siderosis consistent with the diagnosis of cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA).

Manual physical therapy for neck disorders: an umbrella review.

Introduction: Neck pain is a common musculoskeletal disorder, with a prevalence rate (age-standardized) of 27.0 per 1000 in 2019. Approximately 50-85% of individuals with acute neck pain do not experience complete resolution of symptoms, experiencing chronic pain.

Hepatitis C Virus Testing Among Perinatally Exposed Children: 2018 to 2020.

Objective: To assess the frequency of hepatitis C virus (HCV) testing among a population-based cohort of perinatally exposed children and identify factors associated with testing.

Methods: Using a population-based surveillance cohort of perinatally exposed children born from 2018 to 2020 from 4 US jurisdictions (Georgia; Massachusetts; Allegheny County, Pennsylvania; and Los Angeles County, California), we describe the frequency, timing, and type of HCV testing among children and identify characteristics associated with having an HCV test result by the age of 2 to 3 years. Data were obtained from electronic laboratory reporting, vital records, and medical records.

Academic Coaching in Entry-level Doctor of Physical Therapy Education.

Background And Purpose: Learners face a variety of academic and personal challenges that may impact performance in Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) programs. Academic coaching has emerged as a student support model within undergraduate medical education but has not yet been evaluated in DPT education. The purpose of this method/model presentation was to describe the development, implementation, and evaluation of 2 coaching programs.

Introduction: A clear immune correlate of protection from severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection has not been defined. We explored antibody, B-cell, and T-cell responses to the third-dose vaccine and relationship to incident SARS-CoV-2 infection.

Methods: Adults in a prospective cohort provided blood samples at day 0, day 14, and 10 months after the third-dose SARS-CoV-2 vaccine.

Evaluation of Anti-Xa Target Attainment with Prophylactic Enoxaparin Dosing Regimens for Venous Thromboembolism Prophylaxis in Morbidly Obese Patients.

Subcutaneous enoxaparin has been shown to reduce the risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE) among hospitalized patients. However, alternative enoxaparin dosing strategies may be necessary in morbid obesity. The objective of this study was to assess the rate of target anti-Xa attainment with three enoxaparin dosing regimens for venous thromboembolism (VTE) prophylaxis in morbidly obese patients.

Strategic Learning Strategies of Doctor of Physical Therapy Students.

Introduction: The use of strategic learning strategies has been positively associated with academic performance in several graduate health profession programs. This finding suggests that it may be an important construct to explore in Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) education. The Learning and Study Strategies Inventory (LASSI) summarizes a student's perception and use of 10 learning and study strategies.

Parasiticide use and obesity in dogs with sudden acquired retinal degeneration syndrome.

Objective: To investigate parasiticide use and describe signalment features in patients with sudden acquired retinal degeneration syndrome (SARDS).

Animals: Retrospective case-control study of dogs with (n = 71) and without (136) SARDS.

Methods: Parasiticide use, presentation season, weight, body condition, and signalment were compared between dogs diagnosed with SARDS and the reference population by use of descriptive statistics and logistic regression.

Advancing the practice of trauma: utilizing advanced practice providers to improve patient outcomes through a collaborative team approach.

Advanced practice providers (APPs) have become essential to trauma teams in the United States during the last few decades. The optimal utilization of APPs is not yet known and is likely highly variable secondary to many factors. We discuss three aspects of the multidisciplinary approach to caring for trauma patients.

A systematic review of symptoms experienced by children and young people with kidney failure.

Background: Kidney failure at any age has a significant impact on quality of life (QoL) but the overall symptom burden for children and young people (CYP) is poorly described. Kidney failure has no cure and whilst transplantation is the preferred management option, it is not always possible, with patients requiring supportive care at the end of their lives.

Aim: To use the literature to understand the symptom burden for CYP with kidney failure who are approaching end-of-life.

Shared decision-making (SDM) is a collaborative approach to healthcare decision-making that involves patients and healthcare professionals working together to make decisions that are informed by the best available medical evidence, as well as the patient's values, preferences and goals. The importance of SDM and the intricate interplay among parents, children and young people (CYP), and healthcare professionals are increasingly acknowledged as the crucial aspects of delivering high-quality paediatric care. While there is a substantial evidence base for SDM improving knowledge and reducing decisional conflict, the evidence for long-term measures such as improved health outcomes is limited and mainly inconclusive.

Association Between Traumatic Brain Injury and Psychopathic Traits Among Justice-Involved Adolescents.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a global public health problem and is highly prevalent among justice-involved populations. Pediatric TBI is linked with long-term negative outcomes and is correlated with substance use, criminal behavior, psychiatric disorders, and disruptions in neurocognition. These same TBI correlates are evident among youth with psychopathic traits.

Revealing the Pressure-Induced Phase Transformation of Xenotime TbPO via Photoluminescence Spectroscopy.

The pressure-induced phase transformations of certain rare earth (RE) orthophosphates have attracted broad interest from geoscience to structural ceramics. Studying these transformations has required Raman spectroscopy or synchrotron X-ray diffraction (XRD), each of which suffers from poor signal or limited accessibility, respectively. This study exploits the photoluminescence (PL) of Tb ions and the unique sensitivity of PL to the local bonding environment to interrogate the symmetry-reducing xenotime-monazite phase transformation of TbPO.

The Impact of Virtual Laboratories on Student Clinical Education Preparedness: A Mixed-Method Analysis.

Introduction: The COVID-19 pandemic saw physical therapist (PT) education programs in 2020 add virtual options to prepare students for hands-on clinical skills. The purpose of this research was to investigate student confidence, preparation, and clinical performance based on their choice of virtual or in-person laboratory immersion. Secondary analysis compared 2020 cohort outcomes with the previous cohort in 2019 (prepandemic).

Psychometric properties of the Buss-Perry Aggression Questionnaire-short form among law enforcement officers.

Repeatedly capturing national headlines, excessive law enforcement officer (LEO) use of force in critical incident encounters is one of the most divisive human rights issues in the United States. Valid and reliable measures of potential precursors to LEO excessive use of force, such as aggression, are needed. The Buss-Perry Aggression Questionnaire-short form (BPAQ-SF) is a validated measure of aggression across various populations; however, evaluation of this easily administered measure in high-stress, frontline populations such as LEOs is limited.

Ophthalmic findings associated with Australian tick paralysis (holocyclotoxicity) in hospitalized domestic dogs and cats.

Objective: To describe ophthalmic findings in hospitalized canine and feline patients with tick paralysis (TP) and investigate possible predisposing factors.

Animals Studied: Forty-seven dogs and 28 cats hospitalized with TP assessed with an ophthalmic examination performed by an ABVO resident.

Methods: Dogs and cats were hospitalized with TP from October 2021 to January 2022 and had an ophthalmic examination performed by an ABVO resident.

Superficial keratectomy for the treatment of spontaneous chronic corneal epithelial defects in dogs.

Objective: To report the outcome of superficial keratectomy with bandage contact lens placement for the treatment of spontaneous chronic corneal epithelial defects (SCCEDs) in dogs.

Methods: Patients that underwent a superficial keratectomy with bandage lens placement for the treatment of one or more SCCEDs were retrospectively included in the study. Signalment, eye(s) affected, prior medical therapy and any procedures performed, post-operative medical therapy, healing rate, and any post-operative complications were recorded.
