Ultrasonic sensors based on backscattering principles have been developed for various applications involving arbitrary or random scatterer distributions. Although the theory of multiple scattering of waves is well-established, it has not been thoroughly explored in these applications. This work presents a feasible and simplified three-dimensional scattering model to predict the transient response generated by a set of rods positioned in the near field of a 1 MHz water-coupled ultrasonic transducer.

Bilateral risk-reducing mastectomy (BRRM) is the surgical removal of both breasts to reduce the risk of cancer. In this Society of Surgical Oncology position statement, we review the literature addressing the indications, outcomes, and risks of BRRM to update the society's 2017 statement. We held a virtual meeting to outline key topics and conducted a literature search using PubMed to identify relevant articles.

Article Synopsis
  • Surgeons have distinct expectations and responsibilities when it comes to professionalism, especially due to their interactions with various groups including peers, trainees, and patients in high-stress situations.
  • Effective communication and respectful professional behavior are crucial and are currently adapting to reflect the changing workforce and societal norms.
  • Professionalism is now being formally taught in medical education, with future developments including standardized training modules and connections to surgeon evaluation, credentialing, and reimbursement processes.

Article Synopsis
  • The American College of Surgeons introduced six operative standards to improve patient outcomes in cancer surgery, and a study was conducted to evaluate surgeon awareness of these standards when they were first implemented and two years later.
  • An anonymous survey was sent to CoC-accredited cancer programs in 2021 and 2023, assessing knowledge of operative techniques and accreditation standards, with results showing higher familiarity with surgical techniques than with the accreditation standards.
  • The findings indicated that surgeons at accredited institutions had better knowledge of the standards, and over the two years, there was a notable increase in understanding and awareness of the accreditation standards among all surveyed surgeons.

This study introduces an innovative approach to the layered model, emphasizing the physical-chemical characterization of miscible liquid systems through ultrasonic techniques, with a specific focus on the water-ethanol system used in pharmaceutical formulations. Traditional characterization methods, while effective, face challenges due to the complex nature of solutions, such as the need for large pressure variations and strict temperature control. The proposed approach integrates partial molar volumes and partial propagation velocity functions into the layered model, enabling a nuanced understanding of miscibility and interactions.

Background: For patients with clinically node-positive (cN+) breast cancer undergoing neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC), retrieving previously clipped, biopsy-proven positive lymph nodes during sentinel lymph node biopsy [i.e., targeted axillary dissection (TAD)] may reduce false negative rates.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the impact of internal mammary lymphadenopathy (IML) on breast cancer treatment and outcomes, focusing on patients from the I-SPY-2 clinical trial between 2010 and 2022.
  • Out of 2095 patients, 198 were found to have IML, with most detected via MRI; younger age, larger tumors, and higher tumor grade were linked to IML presence.
  • Although IML patients were more likely to receive radiation therapy, there were no significant differences in recurrence rates or event-free survival compared to patients without IML, suggesting that IML is not a negative prognostic factor when treated with modern approaches.

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has had a profound impact on surgical training globally. We aimed to explore and identify the specific challenges faced by women surgeons during the pandemic and provide recommendations for improvement.

Methods: A survey was conducted among trainee members of the Association of Women Surgeons, assessing various aspects of clinical training, mental well-being, and personal and professional life.

The emergence of COVID-19 dramatically changed social behavior across societies and contexts. Here we study whether social norms also changed. Specifically, we study this question for cultural tightness (the degree to which societies generally have strong norms), specific social norms (e.

Article Synopsis
  • - Rates of contralateral mastectomy (CM) for unilateral breast cancer are rising in the U.S., with patients considering factors like the risk of contralateral breast cancer (CBC) and aesthetic concerns, while surgeons focus mainly on CBC risk.
  • - Although CM can lower the risk of developing new breast cancer in high-risk patients, it hasn't been shown to improve overall survival rates.
  • - Recommendations include performing mammograms within a year before CM but not routine preoperative MRIs or postoperative imaging, and it's advised that shared decision-making can help manage the rates of CM.

Background: Limited data exist regarding the optimal locoregional approach for males with ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS). This study examined trends in management and survival for males with DCIS.

Methods: The National Cancer Database (NCDB) was queried for males with a diagnosis of DCIS from 2006 to 2017.

Background: A novel Peer Review Academy was developed as a collaborative effort between the Association of Women Surgeons and the journal Surgery to provide formal training in peer review. We aimed to describe the outcomes of this initiative using a mixed methods approach.

Methods: We developed a year-long curriculum with monthly online didactic sessions.

The extraction process of crude oil requires addition of water, resulting in complex emulsions, in which the phases must be separated before the petrochemical processing starts. An ultrasonic cell may be used to determine in real time the water content in water-in-crude oil emulsions. The water content of emulsions can be related to parameters, such as propagation velocity, density and relative attenuation.

Through the understanding of multiple etiologies, pathologies, and disease progression trajectories, breast cancer shifted historically from a singular malignancy of the breast to a complex of molecular/biological entities, translating into individualized disease-modifying treatments. As a result, this led to various de-escalations of treatment compared with the gold standard in the era preceding systems biology: radical mastectomy. Targeted therapies have minimized morbidity from the treatments and mortality from the disease.

Importance: The lack of family-friendly policies continues to contribute to the underrepresentation and attrition of surgical trainees. Women in surgery face unique challenges in balancing surgical education with personal and family needs.

Observations: The Association of Women Surgeons is committed to supporting surgical families and developing equitable family-friendly guidelines.
