In six healthy male volunteers, the percutaneous absorption of spironolactone was compared with placebo in a double-blind crossover study. The subjects were randomly given either a cream containing 5% spironolactone or placebo to be applied in a randomized sequential way to a well defined skin area equivalent to 55% of body area. During the 72 h following the application of the ointment, blood levels of canrenone, the major metabolite of spironolactone, have been determined.

A 60-year-old male patient, originating from West Africa, developed acute and regressive neurologic symptoms associated with aphasia, apraxia, acalculia, behavioral impairments, and an epileptic phase. Eighteen months after the onset of the disease, the patient was almost normal. All along the clinical course, biological abnormality patterns were minor.

Prenatal diagnosis of phenylketonuria (PKU) is now available owing to restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) of the phenylalanine hydroxylase gene. Their carbohydrate content and the electrophoretic mobility of both endoglycosidase H-treated exo-beta-glucanases suggest that they share the same protein fraction.

Detection and titration of neutralizing antibodies to HIV using an inhibition of the cytopathic effect of the virus on MT4 cells.

An assay for determining neutralizing antibodies in sera from individuals infected with HIV was developed. This assay is based on an inhibition of the cytopathic effect observed after HIV superinfection of the HTLV-1-positive cell-line MT4. Only about 10% of asymptomatic seropositive donors exhibit a high titre over 1/500 up to 1/2000 while in 60% of sera, neutralizing antibodies were not detected.

The major envelope glycoprotein of the causative agent of Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) lymphadenopathy-associated virus (LAV) has been identified and characterized. The glycoprotein has an apparent molecular weight of 110,000-120,000 under denaturing conditions in polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Upon deglycosylation by a specific endoglycosydase, its size is reduced to 80,000.

Evidence for pancreas injury in adult respiratory distress syndrome.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relation between serum lipase (LP), serum immunoreactive trypsin (IRT), and its inhibitors in patients with adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) of diverse origin and to compare their time course with other acute conditions. The IRT and LP levels were determined at regular intervals in 41 patients hospitalized in the intensive respiratory unit with ARDS (n = 9), acute pancreatitis (n = 5), shock (n = 9), bronchopneumonia (n = 10), or acute cardiogenic pulmonary edema (n = 8). Several trypsin inhibitors were measured simultaneously: serum trypsin inhibitory capacity (TIC), alpha 1-antitrypsin, alpha 2-macroglobulin, and antithrombin III.

A human retrovirus was isolated from the peripheral blood of three American patients newly diagnosed with the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). In each case the major core viral protein (p25) was shown to be antigenically identical to that of the prototype lymphadenopathy-associated virus (LAV). Two of the viral isolates were derived from intravenous narcotics abusers, the first demonstration of LAV isolation from this risk group.
