Objective: Off-pump valve replacement using self-expandable stents is an emerging technique for pulmonary valve disease. However, significant limitations are the lack of easily available valve substitute to be inserted within the stent and, in the setting of repaired tetralogy of Fallot, the existence of huge pulmonary trunk. In this work, the morphology, structure, and surface hydration of biomimetic nanocrystalline apatites were investigated before and after surface exchange with such Mg2+ ions, by combining chemical alterations (ion exchange, H2O-D2O exchanges) and physical examinations (Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM)). HRTEM data suggested that the Mg2+/Ca2+ exchange process did not affect the morphology and surface topology of the apatite nanocrystals significantly, while a new phase, likely a hydrated calcium and/or magnesium phosphate, was formed in small amount for high Mg concentrations.

Introduction: The objective was to identify predictive factors for non-invasive ventilation (NIV) failure and to describe its use in bronchiolitis.
Patients And Methods: Prospective observational study that included patients diagnosed with bronchiolitis with a modified Wood's Clinical Asthma Score 5, or oxygen saturation <92%, or venous CO(2) partial pressure (PCO(2)) 60 mm Hg, with no response to medical treatment, who received NIV from December 2005 to May 2008. We collected clinical data before NIV began and at 1, 6, 12, 24 and 48 h.
Drug supply chain safety has become a priority for public health which implies a collective process. This process associates all health professionals including the pharmacist who plays a major role. Methods: From May 2001 to May 2005, 8 patients (5 men; mean age 47.6 years, range 18-73) with a history of aortic coarctation repairs 17 to 40 years prior were referred to our institution for an anastomotic thoracic pseudoaneurysm.
Introduction: Hemophagocytic syndrome (HFS) is a potentially lethal disorder due to an uncontrolled immune response to a triggering agent. Our objective is to raise the importance of HFS early diagnosis by presenting a representative case.
Case Presentation: A sixteen-year-old girl with Still disease diagnosis developed a progressive multiorgan failure including acute respiratory distress (ARDS), anemia and thrombopenia, elevated liver enzymes, renal failure, coagulopathy with hypofibrinogenemia, and acute phase reactants elevation despite broad-spectrum antibiotics.
To assess possible differences between the mineral phases of cortical and cancellous bone, the structure and composition of isolated bovine mineral crystals from young (1-3 months) and old (4-5 years) postnatal bovine animals were analyzed by a variety of complementary techniques: chemical analyses, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and (31)P solid-state magic angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR). This combination of methods represents the most complete physicochemical characterization of cancellous and cortical bone mineral completed thus far. Spectra obtained from XRD, FTIR, and (31)P NMR all confirmed that the mineral was calcium phosphate in the form of carbonated apatite; however, a crystal maturation process was evident between the young and old and between cancellous and cortical mineral crystals.

Case Presentation: We describe a case of sudden death in a 14 year old boy with two remarkable points, successful resuscitation at school using an AED and diagnosis of arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy (ARVC).
The aim of this study was to show the evolution of diagnostic techniques revealing an abnormal origin of the left coronary artery and present the follow-up results of patients operated for this malformation at different ages. This retrospective study includes 36 children or adults, with a mean age at the moment of of 28 months old, ranging from 7 days to 39 years. In 9% of cases, patients were asymptomatic.
