Aim: The aim of this study is to investigate the dosimetric effects of rotational uncertainties in patient positioning on target coverage in stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) of multiple brain metastases using single isocenter volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT).

Materials And Methods: Ten SRS cases with multiple brain metastases (2-8) planned with single isocenter non-coplanar VMAT technique were investigated in this study. Pitch, yaw and roll displacements of 1, 3 and 5° were simulated about isocenter along each axes and nine plans were obtained for each case.

Optimisation and analysis of polymerase chain reaction based DNA sequencing for genotyping polyoma virus in renal transplant patients: a report from South India.

Purpose: To optimise a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) based DNA sequencing technique for genotyping polyoma virus in clinical specimens obtained from renal transplant patients.

Materials And Methods: A hundred and thirty (106 peripheral blood and 24 urine) clinical specimens collected from renal transplant patients were included in the study for detecting the presence of  DNA of BK virus (BKV), JC virus (JCV) by PCR targeting the viral protein 1 (VP1) gene. PCR based DNA sequencing was performed to determine the genotypes of polyoma virus and subjected to bioinformatics analysis to determine the amino acid sequences and screen for mutations in the VP1 gene.

Aromatase inhibitors (AIs) are anti-neoplastic drugs widely used for the treatment of endocrine responsive breast carcinoma in postmenopausal women. Drug disposition, efficacy and tolerability of these agents are influenced by germ-line polymorphisms in the sequence of the genes encoding CYP19A1 and TCL1A proteins. In the current work, we aimed to determine the haplotype structures, linkage disequilibrium (LD) patterns, and allele and genotype frequency distribution of pharmacologically important variants from two genes (CYP19A1 and TCL1A) in Tamil population and assessed their ethnic differences.

Application of real time polymerase chain reaction targeting kex 1 gene & its comparison with the conventional methods for rapid detection of Pneumocystis jirovecii in clinical specimens.

Background & Objectives: As there are no standard laboratory techniques for the rapid detection of Pneumocystis jirovecii in India, this study was undertaken to evaluate and establish an optimal and rapid technique for the detection of P. jirovecii by comparing three different techniques - staining technique, application of a real time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) targeting kex 1 gene and application of nested PCR targeting mitochondrial large subunit (mtLSU) gene for rapid detection of P. jirovecii in HIV positive patients.

Haplotype structures and functional polymorphic variants of the drug target enzyme aromatase (CYP19A1) in South Indian population.

CYP19A1 gene product aromatase (CYP19A1) is a 58-kDa protein and belongs to the member of the cytochrome P450 superfamily, which facilitates the bioconversion of estrogens from androgens. Single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of CYP19A1 affect the activity of the enzyme and have been implicated in the association of estrogen-dependent disease, prognosis, therapeutic efficacy, and toxicity of third-generation aromatase inhibitors (AIs). Based on ethnicity, the frequency distribution of CYP19A1 alleles will differ, and until now, no data are available for Indians.

Sulcona, a Siddha proprietary medicine used for the treatment of burns, has been in practice for more than 50 years. This medicine has been successfully used on several burned patients with an excellent recovery and safety record. In this manuscript, we investigate some of its pharmacological and safety profiles.

Characterization of synthesized silver nanoparticles and assessment of its genotoxicity potentials using the alkaline comet assay.

Nano-silver (Nano-Ag) particles were synthesized and then characterized using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray diffractometry. TEM showed that Nano-Ag were spherical in shape and their size ranged from 40 to 60nm. X-ray diffractometry indicated that the sample was crystalline and had a face centered cubic structure of pure silver.
