Reactive oxygen species (ROS) play an important role in ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) after cardiac arrest and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CA-CPR). Early administration of vitamin C at a high dose in experimental models resulted in less myocardial damage and had a positive effect on survival after resuscitation. Here, we postulated that the ROS scavenging activity of an anthocyanin (i.

Background: Menopause driven decline in estrogen exposes women to risk of osteoporosis. Detection of early onset and silent progression are keys to prevent fractures and associated burdens.

Methods: In a discovery cohort of 120 postmenopausal women, we combined repeated quantitative pulse-echo ultrasonography of bone, assessment of grip strength and serum bone markers with mass-spectrometric analysis of exhaled metabolites to find breath volatile markers and quantitative cutoff levels for osteoporosis.

Article Synopsis
  • Granulocyte concentrates (GCs) can be made from pooled buffy coats of whole blood donations, allowing for better availability and longer storage times compared to those made from single-donor apheresis, which can only last 24 hours.
  • A process was developed to significantly reduce red blood cell and platelet contamination, extending the shelf life of GCs up to 72 hours while maintaining high cell viability (above 98%) and functionality (with over 95% rates of phagocytosis and oxidative burst).
  • To produce a therapeutic dose of GCs, around 15-20 buffy coats are needed, offering a more efficient alternative for treatment compared to traditional methods.

  • The study investigates the use of automated image analysis for assessing microcirculation during major surgeries, specifically comparing it to a well-established manual analysis method to see how accurately it measures microcirculatory parameters.* -
  • Researchers recorded sublingual microcirculation videos from patients at various stages around surgery, analyzing a total of 336 videos and assessing the agreement between the automated and manual analysis methods through statistical measures.* -
  • Results indicated poor agreement between the two analysis methods, suggesting that the automated system is not reliable for clinical use, indicating the need for further development or improvement in the automated technology.*

  • Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a leading cause of dementia that is fatal, and most treatments targeting amyloid beta have only limited success in slowing progression.
  • Research into senescent cells (SC) and their harmful effects shows potential for new therapies, as treating aged monkeys with the senolytic drug navitoclax led to positive changes in biomarkers related to neuroinflammation and neuronal damage.
  • Navitoclax was found to be safe and well tolerated in the study, suggesting its promise as a new therapeutic approach for addressing AD in humans.

  • The review examines the relationships between maternal posture and health dynamics during pregnancy, emphasizing how gravity and body position impact physiological and pathophysiological processes.
  • A systematic literature search identified 644 relevant studies published between 1991 and 2021, revealing discrepancies and research gaps in understanding these interactions across multiple organ systems, particularly in the circulatory system.
  • The authors highlight the need for further research and clinical developments to better understand maternal posture's effects on health, which is essential for improving care during pregnancy and postpartum.

The current S1 guidelines on the intraoperative clinical application of hemodynamic monitoring in patients scheduled for noncardiac surgery are presented based on a case report under the aspect of an optimized intraoperative anesthesiological management. The S1 guidelines were developed with the aim of identifying the questions on the intraoperative hemodynamic monitoring and management which are important for the routine daily clinical practice, to discuss them in a guideline group and to answer them based on the current state of scientific knowledge. The guidelines were written under the auspices of the German Society of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine (DGAI) and published by the AWMF in 2023 under the register number 001/049.

Background: Reliable assessment of fluid responsiveness with pulse pressure variation (PPV) depends on certain ventilation-related preconditions; however, some of these requirements are in contrast with recommendations for protective ventilation.

Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the applicability of PPV in patients undergoing non-cardiac surgery by retrospectively analyzing intraoperative ventilation data.

Material And Methods: Intraoperative ventilation data from three large medical centers in Germany and Switzerland from January to December 2018 were extracted from electronic patient records and pseudonymized; 10,334 complete data sets were analyzed with respect to the ventilation parameters set as well as demographic and medical data.

Asteroids with diameters less than about 5 km have complex histories because they are small enough for radiative torques (that is, YORP, short for the Yarkovsky-O'Keefe-Radzievskii-Paddack effect) to be a notable factor in their evolution. (152830) Dinkinesh is a small asteroid orbiting the Sun near the inner edge of the main asteroid belt with a heliocentric semimajor axis of 2.19 AU; its S-type spectrum is typical of bodies in this part of the main belt.

Background: It is unclear whether optimising intraoperative cardiac index can reduce postoperative complications. We tested the hypothesis that maintaining optimised postinduction cardiac index during and for the first 8 h after surgery reduces the incidence of a composite outcome of complications within 28 days after surgery compared with routine care in high-risk patients having elective major open abdominal surgery.

Methods: In three German and two Spanish centres, high-risk patients having elective major open abdominal surgery were randomised to cardiac index-guided therapy to maintain optimised postinduction cardiac index (cardiac index at which pulse pressure variation was <12%) during and for the first 8 h after surgery using intravenous fluids and dobutamine or to routine care.

An optical system for multichannel coupling of laser arrays to polymer waveguide array probes with a single biconvex lens is developed. The developed cylindrical module with 13 mm and 20 mm in diameter and length, respectively, enables coupling of eight individual optical channels using an aspheric lens. Specific coupling with crosstalk below -13 for each channel and quasi-uniform coupling over all channels is achieved for a waveguide array with 100 µm lateral facet pitch at the incoupling site.

Background And Goal Of Study: Pulse pressure variation (PPV) and stroke volume variation (SVV), which are based on the forces caused by controlled mechanical ventilation, are commonly used to predict fluid responsiveness. When PPV and SVV were introduced into clinical practice, volume-controlled ventilation (VCV) with tidal volumes (VT) ≥ 10 ml kg was most commonly used. Nowadays, lower VT and the use of pressure-controlled ventilation (PCV) has widely become the preferred type of ventilation.
