Vegetative desiccation tolerance (VDT), the ability of such tissues to survive the near complete loss of cellular water, is a rare but polyphyletic phenotype. It is a complex multifactorial trait, typified by universal (core) factors but with many and varied adaptations due to plant architecture, biochemistry and biotic/abiotic dynamics of particular ecological niches. The ability to enter into a quiescent biophysically stable state is what ultimately determines desiccation tolerance.

However, no treatment option for atherosclerosis-associated endothelial dysfunction, which is accompanied by a loss of CD39, is available, and hence, adverse effects like thromboembolism and restenosis may occur. Messenger RNA (mRNA)-based therapy represents a novel strategy, whereby de novo synthesis of a desired protein is achieved after delivery of a modified mRNA to the target cells.

In clinical practice, the combination of brief, cost effective, valid and reliable assessment of personality disorders (PDs) is highly important. Substantial budget cuts require optimal use of the clinician's time. PDs are related with high axis I comorbidity, poorer therapy outcome and increased health service costs.

Three of the patients had malignancies and one was suffering from dehydration with a urinary tract infection and de novo diabetes mellitus. The patient with a meningioma recovered after surgery, the other three patients died despite treatment.

A 72-year-old depressed woman was admitted by court order after a long history of ¿successful' resistance to any treatment, both at home and in a psychiatric hospital. The nature of her disorder had not been recognised and she was diagnosed elsewhere as suffering from factitious disorder, probably based on intense countertransference. The diagnosis of depression with mood-congruent psychotic features was made.

The GIP was compared to older rating-scales like the BOP and NOSIE-30 in a psychiatric observation clinic for the elderly. Nurses' observations based on the GIP are highly related to clinical diagnosis.

The GIP has the additional advantage of specifically describing the emotional and affective characteristics of psychogeriatric patients. Interrater reliability (Cohen's kappa) of all three rating scales was modest, which might be explained by the type of setting: a short stay clinic for the elderly where rapid behavioural changes can occur.

The radiologic and biopsy findings point to a widespread vasculopathy, involving small and mid-sized arteries. The histologic examination of the temporal artery biopsy in two patients gives additional evidence for a chronic endarteritis as possible underlying cause of this disease entity.
