Aim Haglund's syndrome may be responsible for chronic pain in the ankle and hindfoot. Although numerous therapeutic approaches have been described in the literature, to this date no consensus over a surgical treatment has been established. We report our experience in the treatment of Haglund's syndrome and pre-insertional calcifications of the Achilles tendon using an open surgical approach and platelet rich plasma (PRP) membranes as a local adjuvant.

Background: Goal-directed decision-making is a central component of the broader reward and motivation system, and requires the ability to dynamically integrate both positive and negative feedback from the environment in order to maximize rewards and minimize losses over time. Altered decision-making processes, in which individuals fail to consider the negative consequences of their decisions on both themselves and others, may play a role in driving antisocial behaviour.

Aim: The main study aim was to investigate possible differences in loss and risk aversion across matched patients, all with a schizophrenia spectrum disorder (SSD), but who varied according to whether they had a history of serious interpersonal violence or not, and a sample of healthy controls with no history of violence.

Article Synopsis
  • - Vohwinkel Syndrome, or Keratoderma Hereditarium Mutilans, is a rare genetic skin condition characterized by "starfish" keratoses on fingers, thick skin on palms and soles, hearing loss, and constricting bands that can lead to autoamputation.
  • - Treatment options for the associated constricting bands (pseudoainhum) have been inconsistent, making management challenging for affected individuals.
  • - This study focuses on a case of a woman with Vohwinkel syndrome who underwent surgery for constriction bands on her pinky finger, and it includes a review of existing literature on managing the condition.

Objectives: To evaluate whether interleukin-6 expression in the temporal arteries could be a more sensitive marker of active inflammation compared to the presence of an inflammatory infiltrate.

Methods: Sixty-three formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded temporal artery biopsies performed between 2009 and 2012 from 32 patients with biopsy-proven giant cell arteritis, 8 patients with a negative biopsy but with a final diagnosis of giant cell arteritis, and 23 controls (patients with an initial clinical suspicion of giant cell arteritis in whom an alternative diagnosis subsequently was made) were examined. Biopsy specimens showing a transmural inflammatory infiltrate were considered positive for giant cell arteritis.

The peroneal tubercle is an osseous prominence present on the calcaneus bone at the junction between the middle and the anterior third of its lateral surface. It is a bony septum which divides the tendons of the peroneus brevis and the peroneus longus and offers insertion to the inferior peroneal retinaculum. A hypertrophy of this prominence causes pain in the lateral and the posterior part of the foot while wearing shoes, rarely peroneal tenosynovitis can even cause it to break.
