Coffee Silverskin as a Potential Ingredient for Functional Foods: Recent Advances and a Case Study with Chocolate Cake.

Coffee silverskin (CS) is a by-product of the coffee roasting process that is known for its potential as a fiber source with antioxidant properties. Therefore, this study aimed to provide an overview of the latest research on CS as a potential ingredient for functional foods and to evaluate the effect of adding different amounts of CS on the functional and sensory attributes of chocolate cakes. The addition of CS increased the total dietary fiber content, antioxidant capacity and the contents of extractable and non-extractable phenolics in the cakes.

Cortical Responses to Mother's Voice in Comparison with Unfamiliar Voice in the First Trimester of Life: A fNIRS Study.

 The use of functional near-infrared light spectroscopy (fNIRS) may be applied to study cortical responses in children and could offer insight into auditory and speech perception during the early stages of life. Some literature suggests that babies are already able to identify familiar voices at birth, and fNIRS is a non-invasive technique that can be used to study this population.  To characterize the cortical responses of infants during their first trimester of life to infant-directed speech using near-infrared light spectroscopy and to verify whether there is a difference in responses when infant-directed speech is performed by their mother compared with an unknown person.

The objective of the present case report is to describe Icon resin infiltration as a treatment option for postorthodontic white spot lesions (WSLs). A 23-year-old male patient complained of white spots on his maxillary anterior teeth that caused him significant esthetic concern in terms of his smile and affected his self-esteem. During the anamnesis, the patient reported that he noticed white spots directly after the brackets were removed after orthodontic treatment, which had not yet been completed.

Background: Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory condition that affects the supporting tissues of the teeth, and can lead to serious complications such as tooth loss and systemic health problems, including diabetes, which have a bidirectional relationship with periodontitis. Circulating microparticles originate from different cell types after stimuli such as activation or apoptosis. Interleukins are related to processes in the regulation of the immune response, inflammation, and cell growth.

Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) stands poised to revolutionize our understanding of auditory detection, speech perception, and language development in infants. In this study, we conducted a meticulous integrative review across Medline, Scopus, and LILACS databases, targeting investigations utilizing fNIRS to explore language-related features and cortical activation during auditory stimuli in typical infants. We included studies that used the NIRS technique to study language and cortical activation in response to auditory stimuli in typical infants between 0 and 3 years old.

Effects of Hearing Aid Use on Individuals Diagnosed with Hearing Loss and Dementia: A Systematic Review.

Background: The assumption that hearing rehabilitation could improve quality of life and reduce dementia risk in people with hearing loss is a subject that needs further studies, especially clinical trials. It is necessary to determine the effects of hearing aid use, as part of hearing rehabilitation, among people diagnosed with dementia.

Objective: To systematically review the literature to evaluate the effects of hearing aid use on cognition and quality of life of people with dementia.

Global Distribution of Canine Visceral Leishmaniasis and the Role of the Dog in the Epidemiology of the Disease.

Visceral leishmaniasis is a disease caused by protozoa of the species (syn = ) and , which are transmitted by hematophagous insects of the genera and . The domestic dog () is considered the main urban reservoir of the parasite due to the high parasite load on its skin, serving as a source of infection for sandfly vectors and, consequently, perpetuating the disease in the urban environment. Some factors are considered important in the perpetuation and spread of canine visceral leishmaniasis (CVL) in urban areas, such as stray dogs, with their errant behavior, and houses that have backyards with trees, shade, and organic materials, creating an attractive environment for sandfly vectors.

The development of prophylactic vaccines is important in preventing and controlling diseases such as visceral leishmaniasis (VL), in addition to being an economic measure for public health. Despite the efforts to develop a vaccine against human VL caused by , none is available, and the focus has shifted to developing vaccines against canine visceral leishmaniasis (CVL). Currently, commercially available vaccines are targeted at CVL but are not effective.

Modeling the alkylation of amines with alkyl bromides: explaining the low selectivity due to multiple alkylation.

Context: Nucleophilic substitution reactions of aliphatic amines with alkyl halides represent a simple and direct mechanism for obtaining higher-order aliphatic amines. However, it is well known that these reactions suffer from low selectivity due to multiple alkylations, which is attributed to the higher reactivity of the newly formed amine. In order to provide a detailed explanation for this kind of system, we have investigated the reactivity of primary and secondary amines with 1-bromopropane and 2-bromopropane.

In the present study, we identified and characterized two defensin-like peptides in an antifungal fraction obtained from Capsicum chinense pepper fruits and inhibited the growth of Colletotrichum scovillei, which causes anthracnose. AMPs were extracted from the pericarp of C. chinense peppers and subjected to ion exchange, molecular exclusion, and reversed-phase in a high-performance liquid chromatography system.

Dogs with visceral leishmaniasis play a key role in the transmission cycle of to humans in the urban environment. There is a consensus regarding the importance of developing a vaccine to control this disease. Despite many efforts to develop a protective vaccine against CVL, the ones currently available, Leish-tec and LetiFend, have limited effectiveness.

Polyphenols in Jabuticaba ( spp.) Peel Flours: Extraction and Comparative Evaluation of FTIR and HPLC for Quantification of Individual Compounds.

Jabuticabas are wild fruits native to Brazil, and their peels, the main residue from jabuticaba processing, contain significant amounts of bioactive compounds, which are mostly phenolics. Conventional methods based on the estimation of total extractable phenolics (TEP-Folin-Ciocalteau) or total monomeric anthocyanins (TMA) have limitations and may not reflect the actual antioxidant potential of these peels. Analytical methods, such as high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), are more appropriate for the quantification of specific phenolics, and can be used as a reference for the construction of mathematical models in order to predict the amount of compounds using simple spectroscopic analysis, such as Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR).
