Background: The increasing adoption of individual urban mobility in European cities is contributing to a rise in the number of bicycle and e-scooter users. Consequently, a corresponding increase in accidents, along with an additional burden on emergency departments, is anticipated, particularly in metropolitan areas. The objective of this prospective cross-sectional study was to gather detailed information regarding the patient demographics, accident mechanisms, and injury patterns of e-scooter riders in comparison to cyclists.

Objective: Emergent complex abdominal aortic diseases are challenging to treat. During in situ laser fenestration (ISLF), aortic branches are covered and flow is restored with in situ fenestration of the stent graft, with promising midterm results. This study aimed to expand on the limited body of knowledge of midterm outcomes of ISLF in renovisceral aortic pathology in a multicentre setting.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examined the epidemiology and risk factors for ACL injuries in handball, hypothesizing that the injury rates are high, akin to other sports like football.
  • A total of 84 ACL injuries were reported over six seasons, with a notable 46.3% being re-ruptures; higher injury rates were found in the first division compared to the second division.
  • Key risk factors identified include previous knee injuries and increased time spent in matches, indicating a significant concern for professional handball players.

Objective: The objective of this study was to investigate whether the use of carbon dioxide (CO) angiography decreases the intraoperative use of iodine contrast medium (ICM), thereby decreasing the risk of developing postoperative renal damage in patients undergoing iliac branch device (IBD) implantation.

Methods: Patients undergoing IBD implantation at a single tertiary center between May 2013 and August 2019 were screened for inclusion in the study. A cohort of patients in whom an intraoperative imaging protocol using predominantly CO was compared with a control group in whom ICM was used (CO and ICM groups).

The main complications of coverage accessory renal artery (ARA) are renal infarction and potentially renal function impairment and type II endoleak if firm apposition to the aortic wall is not achieved. We describe the management of an ARA type II endoleak treated by laser-assisted, transgraft coil embolization (LATE). A 76-year-old patient underwent a computed tomography scan 4 years after endovascular aneurysm repair.

Background: A better understanding of the molecular events during liver normothermic machine perfusion (NMP) is warranted to develop a data-based approach for the identification of biomarkers representative of graft quality and posttransplant outcome. We analysed the dynamic transcriptional changes during NMP and linked them to clinical and biochemical parameters.

Methods: 50 livers subjected to NMP for up to 24 h were enrolled.

Endovascular aortic aneurysm repair is widely used for the treatment of abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA), but has a 10% to 40% incidence of type II endoleak during follow-up. There are various techniques to treat these endoleaks in the case of enlarging of the AAA, but the clinical effectiveness is low. In recent years, preemptive AAA sac embolization has shown some encouraging results with significant AAA shrinkage.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the effectiveness of bare metal stents (BMS) versus covered stents (CS) in treating chronic and acute-on-chronic mesenteric ischemia (CMI and AoCMI).
  • It involves a randomized trial with 98 patients at Copenhagen University Hospital, where participants are assigned to either BMS or CS during surgery.
  • The research aims to fill a gap in the existing literature, as there are no previous prospective controlled trials comparing these two stent types, and it will also assess the impact of a more detailed postoperative monitoring plan.

Post-hepatectomy liver failure (PHLF) remains the major contributor to death after liver resection. Oxidative stress is associated with postoperative complications, but its impact on liver function is unclear. This first in-human, prospective, single-center, observational pilot study evaluated perioperative oxidative stress and PHLF according to the ISGLS (International Study Group for Liver Surgery).

This retrospective observational registry trial combines national registries for vascular surgical procedures and diabetes mellitus to clarify results of drug eluting technology in treating diabetic subjects with intermittent claudication or chronic limb threatening ischemia compared to treatment of non-diabetic subjects. As earlier proposed and showed in this trial, there may be an implication for a beneficial treatment efficacy with drug eluting therapy in the diabetic population with PAD compared to the non-diabetic population. A finding worth further exploration.

Article Synopsis
  • Normothermic liver machine perfusion (NLMP) improves the preservation and assessment of liver organs, enhancing their utilization for transplantation, specifically in split liver transplantation (SLT).
  • A study analyzed outcomes from adult recipients who underwent SLT after NLMP, measuring 90-day graft and patient survival, as well as post-transplant complications.
  • Results showed that NLMP was safe and allowed successful delay of the second split liver graft transplantation, achieving a 100% survival rate at 90 days while documenting some early complications.
