We present a rare primary right atrial tumor diagnosed in-utero with fetal echocardiography, and further characterized as a congenital hemangioma with magnetic resonance imaging. Surgical resection was done six days after birth. This case illustrates the complementary roles of evolving advanced imaging techniques for fetuses and infants with congenital heart disease that allows for surgery early in the neonatal period.

Patients with obstructed total anomalous pulmonary venous connection (TAPVC) usually present critically ill and continue to be extremely challenging with presurgical stabilization. We present an extra corporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO)-dependent neonate with obstructed TAPVC that was successfully palliated with transvenous stent placement in the obstructed vertical vein.

Purpose: The prevalence of infective endocarditis (IE) among children with Staphylococcus aureus bacteremia (SAB) is unknown. The objective of this study was to determine prospectively the prevalence of IE among pediatric patients with SAB in a large tertiary care center.

Methods: Between July 1998 and June 2001, all children who developed SAB whose parent/guardian signed informed consent underwent echocardiography.

Pompe or Glycogen Storage Disease type II (GSD-II) is a genetic disorder affecting both cardiac and skeletal muscle. Historically, patients with the infantile form usually die within the first year of life due to cardiac and respiratory failure. Recently a promising enzyme replacement therapy has resulted in improved clinical outcomes and a resurgence of elective anaesthesia for these patients.

Objective: To examine the suitability of the conductance catheter technique for assessment of right ventricular systolic myocardial performance by using preload recruitable stroke work, we compared variables obtained simultaneously by conductance catheter and sonomicrometry dimension techniques. In addition, linearity of volume relationships was studied during rapid preload alteration by bicaval occlusion.

Design: Prospective animal study.

We tested the adequacy of a videoconferencing system using a single integrated systems digital network (ISDN) line (128 kilobits per second) for the remote diagnosis of children with suspected congenital heart disease (CHD). Real-time echocardiogram interpretation was compared to subsequent videotape review in 401 studies with concordance in 383 (95.5%) studies.

We evaluated the ability of real-time 3-dimensional (RT3D) echocardiography to diagnose congenital heart defects and its potential for presenting structural abnormalities in novel views. Seventy-five patients with suspected congenital heart defects were examined with the use of RT3D echocardiography. Images were reviewed off-line as multiple slices of the raw data or as volume-rendered images by a blinded observer.
