Future long duration space missions will expose astronauts to higher doses of galactic cosmic radiation (GCR) than those experienced on the international space station. Recent studies have demonstrated astronauts may be at risk for cardiovascular complications due to increased radiation exposure and fluid shift from microgravity. However, there is a lack of direct evidence on how the cardiovascular system is affected by GCR and microgravity since no astronauts have been exposed to exploratory mission relevant GCR doses.

Brief resolved unexplained event (BRUE) is a common pediatric problem that presents to ambulatory and emergency settings. Infants presenting with a BRUE can be separated into low- and high-risk groups per recent guidelines. As viable precursors to a diverse array of macromolecules, biomass-derived compounds must impart wide-ranging and precisely controllable properties to polymers. In the postnatal vasculature, fully differentiated and quiescent vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) in a "contractile" phenotype are required for the normal regulation of vascular tone. The transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) superfamily of growth factors (TGF-βs and bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs)) are potent inducers of contractile phenotype and mediate (i) induction of contractile genes, and (ii) inhibition of VSMC growth and migration. Using nutritionally restricted ovariectomized lambs, we tested the hypothesis that nutritionally regulated endogenous increases in GnRH secretion (as assessed by LH pulsatility) not only alter the quantity of FSH present in the pituitary and serum, but also alter the pituitary and serum FSH isoform distribution. Eleven lambs were nutritionally restricted from weaning and ovariectomized at 12 wk of age. Beginning at 56 wk, 6 were fed ad libitum for 14 days, and the other 5 were continued on the restricted diet.
