After 2 wk of good control 9 type I diabetic patients were hospitalized and treated in a randomized fashion with different human insulin mixtures (regular: NPH), containing 10, 15, or 20% regular insulin. In the case of the 15:85% mixture, mean blood glucose was found to be in the range of 70-150 mg/dl. Significant differences occurred at certain time points between the curves obtained with the 10:90% and the 15:85% mixtures, and the 10:90% and the 20:80% preparations, respectively.

A portable insulin dosing device (Siemens) was used together with a programmable pocket calculator and a glucose analyzer for short-term adaptation of continuous intravenous insulin infusion to blood glucose alterations. A special algorithm was developed which utilizes a given blood glucose value and the glucose rate of change obtained from two to four consecutive samples as input variables. In contrast to current techniques of feedback-regulation, which require continuous glucose monitoring, intermittent blood sampling allows greater mobility of patients.

Glycosylated haemoglobin (HbA1a-c) and serum albumin (glycosyl-albumin) have been determined in patients with severe diabetic ketoacidosis and non-acidotic coma. Within one week of therapy the level of glycosyl-albumin decreased from 184 mmol 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF)/mol albumin to 152 mmol HMF/mol albumin (p less than 0.01) and was gradually lowered by some 40% during a period of 17 days.

Eleven patients wearing mandibular swinglock bilateral distal extension removable partial dentures opposing maxillary complete dentures were studied for a period up to 2 years. They had moderate to advanced periodontal disease with retrograde mobility patterns. Periodontal therapy, as well as treatment of dental carious lesions, was completed before fabrication of the prosthesis.

Eleven patients who were treated with maxillary or mandibular overdentures or both were recalled at 6-month intervals and studied for a period of 2 years. A periodontist evaluated the periodontal health status of the abutment teeth at initial placement of the overdenture and at all subsequent recalls using standardized periodontal indices. Statistical comparisons of the data from initial examination to the 2-year recall were made to assess the periodontal health status of roots supporting overdentures.

A case is reported in which the telescoped overdenture was chosen instead of conventional techniques in treatment of a patient's maxillary teeth. The advantages and disadvantages of this technique are discussed.

Insulin binding and the effect of insulin on the transport of 3-O-methylglucose, lipogenesis from glucose, glucose oxidation and lipolysis was studied in fat cells of adrenalectomised rats and of a control group of sham-operated rats. The serum insulin level of the adrenalectomised rats (0.7 ng/ml) was lower than that of the controls (1.
