Antifibrinolytic site-specific pharmaco-laser therapy (SSPLT) is an experimental treatment modality for refractory port wine stains (PWS). Conceptually, antifibrinolytic drugs encapsulated in thermosensitive liposomes are delivered to thrombi that form in semi-photocoagulated PWS blood vessels after conventional laser treatment. Local release of antifibrinolytics is induced by mild hyperthermia, resulting in hyperthrombosis and complete occlusion of the target blood vessel (clinical endpoint).

Purpose Of Review: In the present review, recent findings regarding silicone breast implants (SBIs) complicated by rheumatic autoimmune diseases are described.

Recent Findings: Despite changes in the principal constituents of the silicone implants during the past 50 years, silicone remained an adjuvant that may 'bleed' and subsequently may be a chronic stimulus to the immune system resulting in similar clinical manifestations as 50 years ago. Silicones are spread throughout the body and can be detected in tissues and the central nervous system.

In this study, biomechanical strength and bulkiness of the cow-hitch technique and Pulvertaft weave were compared. Our goal was to investigate whether the cow hitch can withstand equal strength in comparison with the Pulvertaft and to see if there is a difference in bulk, which could enhance gliding function and reduce friction and adhesion formation. In this study, we compared one hundred patients with autoimmune/inflammatory syndrome induced by adjuvants (ASIA) due to silicone implant incompatibility syndrome diagnosed in 2014 in Maastricht, the Netherlands, with one hundred historical patients with adjuvant breast disease diagnosed in the Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, USA, between 1985 and 1992. Similarities and differences between these two cohorts were identified to determine whether the spectrum of silicone-related disease changed during the last 30 years. Patients with complaints possibly due to silicone-filled breast implants were prospectively examined in the Reinaert Clinic, Maastricht, the Netherlands between January 2014 and October 2014.

Macrophages play a crucial role in all stages of cutaneous wound healing responses and dysregulation of macrophage function can result in derailed wound repair. The phenotype of macrophages is influenced by the wound microenvironment and evolves during healing from a more pro-inflammatory (M1) profile in early stages, to a less inflammatory pro-healing (M2) phenotype in later stages of repair. The aim of the current study was to investigate the potential of exogenous administration of M2 macrophages to promote wound healing in an experimental mouse model of cutaneous injury.

The aim of the current study was to investigate the effect of nicotine in an experimental mouse model of cutaneous injury and healing responses, during the inflammatory phase of repair. Nicotine injection in full-thickness excisional skin wounds minimally affected inflammatory mediators like TNF, IL-6 and IL-12 while it induced a down-regulation in the expression of growth factors like VEGF, PDGF, TGF-β1 and TGF-β2, and the anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-10. Analysis of wound closure rate indicated no significant differences between nicotine and saline injected controls.

The term endothelial progenitor cell (EPC) was established more than 10 years ago and is used to refer to a group of circulating cells that display endothelial lineage qualities and are able to home to areas of ischemia or vascular injury and to facilitate the repair of damaged blood vessels or develop new vessels as needed. This chapter reviews the current lineage relationships among all the cells called EPC and will clear the terminology used in EPC research. Furthermore, an overview of the clinical and in vitro research, as well as cytokine and drug interactions and potential EPC applications, is given.

The rate of complications in immediate breast reconstruction is in 15% to 20% due to partial loss of the mastectomy skin flaps. The objective of this article is to assess the impact of deep inferior epigastric perforator (DIEP) flap breast reconstruction on self-esteem and to analyze the correlation between aesthetic outcome and self-esteem. Global self-esteem was evaluated using the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale in 31 patients who underwent DIEP flap breast reconstructions. A study-specific questionnaire and photographic evaluation were used by the patient, the plastic surgeon, and the oncological surgeon to measure satisfaction with the aesthetic outcome.
