- This study used in vitro (Schwann cells) and in vivo (sciatic nerve injury in rats) models to examine how fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21) affects PNI and its connection to ferroptosis and mitochondrial issues.
- Results showed that PNI leads to harmful lipid reactive oxygen species and mitochondrial dysfunction, but FGF21 can alleviate these effects and promote nerve repair by inhibiting ferroptosis, suggesting that targeting mitochondria and ferroptosis could be a new way to treat such injuries.
