Structural and Spectroscopic Investigations of pH-Dependent Mo(V) Species in a Bacterial Sulfite-Oxidizing Enzyme.

Mono-pyranopterin-containing sulfite-oxidizing enzymes (SOEs), including eukaryotic sulfite oxidases and homologous prokaryotic sulfite dehydrogenases (SDHs), are molybdenum enzymes that exist in almost all forms of life, where they catalyze the direct oxidation of sulfite into sulfate, playing a key role in protecting cells and organisms against sulfite-induced damage. To decipher their catalytic mechanism, we have previously provided structural and spectroscopic evidence for direct coordination of HPO to the Mo atom at the active site of the SDH from the hyperthermophilic bacterium (SDH), mimicking the proposed sulfate-bound intermediate proposed to be formed during catalysis. In this work, by solving the X-ray crystallographic structure of the unbound enzyme, we resolve the changes in the hydrogen bonding network in the molybdenum environment that enable the stabilization of the previously characterized phosphate adduct.

Twenty-Five Years of Lung Transplantation in Medellín: Overcoming the Challenges of an Emerging Country.

The first successful lung transplant in Colombia was performed on October 28, 1997 in Medellín by Alberto Villegas Hernández at the "Clínica Cardiovascular Santa María" today called the Cardio VID Clinic. Here we present both survival outcomes and characteristics of the oldest and most experienced lung transplant program in Colombia. We conducted a retrospective study of all patients taken to lung transplantation at the Cardio VID Clinic in Medellín, Colombia from October 1997 to October 2022.

Can Medical Students Learn and Perform POCUS in the Pediatric Emergency Department? Implementation of a Short Curriculum.

To determine medical student ability to accurately obtain and interpret POCUS exams of varying difficulty in the pediatric population after a short didactic and hands-on POCUS course. Five medical students were trained in four POCUS applications (bladder volume, long bone for fracture, limited cardiac for left ventricular function, & inferior vena cava collapsibility) and enrolled pediatric ED patients. Ultrasound-fellowship-trained emergency medicine physicians reviewed each scan for image quality and interpretation accuracy using the American College of Emergency Physicians' quality assessment scale.

Chemopreventive Effect on Human Colon Adenocarcinoma Cells of Styrylquinolines: Synthesis, Cytotoxicity, Proapoptotic Effect and Molecular Docking Analysis.

Physicomechanical and Morphological Characterization of Multi-Structured Potassium-Acrylate-Based Hydrogels.

In this work, a photo-polymerization route was used to obtain potassium acrylate-co-acrylamide hydrogels with enhanced mechanical properties, well-defined microstructures in the dry state, and unique meso- and macrostructures in the hydrated state. The properties of the hydrogels depended on the concentration of the crosslinking agent. Mechanical properties, swelling capacity, and morphology were analyzed, showing a well-defined transition at a critical concentration of the crosslinker.

Evaluating the effect of curcumin on the metacestode of Taenia crassiceps.

Curcumin, a curcuminoid present in the rhizome of the plant Curcuma longa has multiple pharmacological effects including anticarcinogenic and anti-inflammatory properties. This work evaluates the anthelmintic effect of the curcumin molecule (98% pure) on Taenia crassiceps cysticerci viability in vitro. Cysticerci incubated in the presence of increasing concentrations of curcumin showed a dose-dependent mortality correlated with a significant increase in the production of reactive oxygen species and a partial inhibition of thioredoxin-glutathione reductase, the only disulfide reductase present in these parasites.

Bench bioprosthetic aortic valve replacement in a donor heart before transplantation.

Critical donor shortages have impulsed the need to expand donor heart eligibility through the use of marginal hearts in cardiac transplantation. Donor valvular disease has been considered as an absolute contraindication for transplant. A 39-year-old male patient with end-stage non-compaction cardiomyopathy, an INTERMACS II heart failure, and a left ventricular ejection fraction of 8% was taken to an orthotopic heart transplantation.

The behavior of environmental noise in developing countries is conditioned by characteristics that are not only linked to transport, infrastructures, and industrial plants in the annuity (common representation in noise maps), but also to other types of sources and periodicities that can influence significantly in noise levels. For this reason, this work proposes different temporal analyzes during the annuity that can be linked to the noisy activities typical of developing tropical countries. To do this, a noise monitoring network composed of seven monitors representing different sources present in the Aburrá Valley (AV) in Colombia is analyzed with measurements of LAeq, every hour, in a period between August 2016 and July 2019.

Evaluating the Efficacy of Two Regional Pain Management Modalities in Autologous Breast Reconstruction.

The cobalt tetraazamacrocyclic [Co(NH)Cl] complex is becoming a popular and versatile catalyst for the electrocatalytic evolution of hydrogen, because of its stability and superior activity in aqueous conditions. We present here a benchmarking of its performances based on the thorough analysis of cyclic voltammograms recorded under various catalytic regimes in non-aqueous conditions allowing control of the proton concentration. This allowed a detailed mechanism to be proposed with quantitative determination of the rate-constants for the various protonation steps, as well as identification of the amine function of the tetraazamacrocyclic ligand to act as a proton relay during H evolution.

In the field of cardiovascular surgery, many areas are frequently evaluated to improve patient outcomes. Even though cardiac surgery has advanced significantly, peri-operative nutrition remains an area needing special attention and is under-considered in patient results. Extra-corporeal membrane oxygenation and emergency C-section for a pregnant COVID-19 positive patient.

Introduction: Data on extra-corporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) therapy for pregnant patients with Coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) infection are limited. Here we report a case of an emergency cesarean section performed while the COVID-19 positive mother was on ECMO support.

Case Report: A 36-year-old COVID-19 positive patient at 26 weeks gestational age presented with respiratory failure requiring extra-corporeal membrane oxygenation therapy.
