The blue crab (), originally from the western Atlantic Ocean, has recently spread to the Mediterranean and is now considered one of the one hundred most invasive species in that region. This opportunistic species, known for its adaptability to different temperatures and salinities, negatively impacts biodiversity and human activities such as fishing and tourism in the Mediterranean. However, the blue crab is gaining interest as a potential food resource due to its high nutritional value and delicate, sweet flavor.

Antithrombotic therapies (ATT) play a pivotal role in the management of cardiovascular diseases, aiming to prevent ischemic events while maintaining a delicate balance with the patient's bleeding risk. Typically, ATT can be classified into antiplatelet and anticoagulant therapies. Their application spans a broad spectrum of cardiovascular conditions, ranging from ischemic heart disease to atrial fibrillation, encompassing venous thromboembolisms and innovative structural interventional cardiology procedures.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a global health issue causing a significant health burden. CKD patients develop thrombotic and hemorrhagic complications, and cardiovascular diseases are associated with increased hospitalization and mortality in this population. The hemostatic alterations are multifactorial in these patients; therefore, the results of different studies are varying and controversial.

Various Vinca species have been traditionally used for their antihypertensive, sedative, and hemostatic properties, as well as for treating diabetes. In this study, some flavonoids, phenolic acids and iridoids were isolated from an endemic Vinca species, Vinca soneri for the first time. α-Glucosidase inhibitory effects of the isolates were tested and kaempferol-3-O-α-rhamnopyranosyl (1→6) β-galactopyranoside (1) was found to be the most active one with an IC value of 285.

Article Synopsis
  • International guidelines recommend using direct oral anticoagulants (DOAC) over vitamin K antagonists (VKA) and dual antithrombotic therapy (DAT) over triple antithrombotic therapy (TAT) for patients on oral anticoagulant therapy undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) with stents.
  • A study involving 1234 patients on oral anticoagulants assessed the outcomes of DOAC versus VKA and DAT versus TAT, focusing on net adverse clinical events (NACE) at a one-year follow-up.
  • Results showed DOAC resulted in a lower NACE rate compared to VKA (16% vs 23%), and while DAT and TAT had similar NACE rates, DAT led to

In recent years, the mean survival rate of children after a cancer diagnosis has significantly improved. At the same time, a growing interest in short and long-term cardiovascular (CV) complications of cancer therapy, as well as long-term CV risk in childhood cancer survivors (CCS) developed, along with proposals of protocols for the diagnosis, management, and prevention of cancer therapy-related CV toxicity (CTR-CVT) in this population. Many clinical and individual risk factors for CTR-CVT have been identified, and a non-negligible prevalence of traditional CV risk factors has been described in this population, potentially associated with a further worsening in both CTR-CVT and long-term CV risk.

  • Pregnancy is a significant challenge for a woman's heart and blood system, and having pre-existing heart issues or metabolic problems can lead to bad outcomes during pregnancy and increase the risk of heart diseases later on.
  • The health environment provided by the mother can impact the cardiovascular well-being of the child, as factors during pregnancy can affect the child's growth and future heart health.
  • This review discusses the latest insights on how both mothers and their unborn children influence cardiovascular health, emphasizing prevention strategies throughout different stages of life.

: Dabigatran etexilate is a pro-drug hydrolyzed into dabigatran by carboxylesterases (CES) and is a substrate of the P-Glycoprotein encoded by the adenosine-triphosphate-binding cassette sub-family B member (ABCB)1 genes. We evaluated the functional response to dabigatran according to different CES1 and ABCB1 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF). : A total of 100 consecutive patients with AF taking dabigatran were enrolled by two Italian centers.

Background: The impact of non-vitamin K antagonist oral anticoagulants (NOACs) on platelet function is still unclear. We conducted a comprehensive ex vivo study aimed at assessing the effect of the four currently marketed NOACs on platelet function.

Methods: We incubated blood samples from healthy donors with concentrations of NOACs (50, 150 and 250 ng/mL), in the range of those achieved in the plasma of patients during therapy.

  • Transcatheter left atrial appendage occlusion (LAAO) is an emerging procedure for stroke prevention in patients with atrial fibrillation who cannot use long-term anticoagulants, yet concerns about its safety and effectiveness remain.
  • A study analyzed data from 428 patients who received LAAO across Italian centers, focusing on the outcomes and the safety associated with varying post-procedure antithrombotic strategies.
  • Results indicated that LAAO is generally safe with low rates of complications, while different post-discharge antithrombotic regimens appear to be personalized based on individual risk for thrombotic and bleeding events.

Sortase A (SrtA) is an attractive target for developing new anti-infective drugs that aim to interfere with essential virulence mechanisms, such as adhesion to host cells and biofilm formation. Herein, twenty hydroxy, nitro, bromo, fluoro, and methoxy substituted chalcone compounds were synthesized, antimicrobial activities and molecular modeling strategies against the SrtA enzyme were investigated. The most active compounds were found to be T2, T4, and T19 against Streptococcus mutans (S.

  • Postoperative atrial fibrillation (POAF) is a frequent complication after heart surgery and is linked to worse health outcomes, highlighting the need for early identification of at-risk patients.* -
  • The study examined left atrial strain parameters through preoperative echocardiography in patients undergoing coronary artery bypass graft surgery, finding that a global peak atrial longitudinal strain (PALS) value below 28% significantly indicates a higher risk of developing POAF.* -
  • Among 310 patients, those with PALS <28% had a 51% incidence of POAF, compared to 14% for those with PALS ≥28%, suggesting that assessing PALS can help target patients for preventive measures and closer monitoring.*

Heart failure (HF) remains an important global health issue, substantially contributing to morbidity and mortality. According to epidemiological studies, men and women face nearly equivalent lifetime risks for HF. However, their experiences diverge significantly when it comes to HF subtypes: men tend to develop HF with reduced ejection fraction more frequently, whereas women are predominantly affected by HF with preserved ejection fraction.
