Activation of the K(ATP) channels results in faster fatigue rates as the channels depress action potential amplitude, whereas abolishing the channel activity has no effect in whole extensor digitorum longus (EDL) and soleus muscles. In this study, we examined the effects of abolished K(ATP) channel activity during fatigue at 37 degrees C on free intracellular Ca(2+) (Ca(2+)(i)) and tetanic force using single muscle fibres and small muscle bundles from the flexor digitorum brevis (FDB). K(ATP) channel deficient muscle fibres were obtained (i) pharmacologically by exposing wild-type fibres to glibenclamide, and (ii) genetically using null mice for the Kir6.

Half of the members of the nuclear receptors superfamily are so-called "orphan" receptors because the identity of their ligand, if any, is unknown. Because of their important biological roles, the study of orphan receptors has attracted much attention recently and has resulted in rapid advances that have helped in the discovery of novel signaling pathways. In the mouse trigeminal pathway, sensory inputs from distinct facial structures, such as whiskers or lower jaw and lip, are topographically mapped onto the somatosensory cortex through relay stations in the thalamus and hindbrain. In the developing hindbrain, the mechanisms generating such maps remain elusive. We found that in the principal sensory nucleus, the whisker-related map is contributed by rhombomere 3-derived neurons, whereas the rhombomere 2-derived progeny supply the lower jaw and lip representation.

Retinoid signaling plays an important role in the developmental patterning of the hindbrain. Studies of the teratogenic effects of retinoids showed early on that the hindbrain suffered patterning defects in cases of retinoid excess or deficiency. Closer examination of these effects in animal models suggested that retinoids might play a physiological role in specifying the antero-posterior axis of the hindbrain.

Ruthenium(II) complexes containing the pentamethylcyclopentadienyl ligand efficiently perform the activation of allylic carbonates and halides to generate cationic and dicationic ruthenium(IV) complexes. This activation has been transferred as a key step to the catalytic allylation of nucleophiles. The structural and electronic properties of the allylic moieties lead to the regioselective formation of chiral products resulting from nucleophilic addition to their most substituted terminus.

Data from the 1999 (N = 15,038) and 2000 (N = 35,828) National Youth Tobacco Survey (American Legacy Foundation, 1999, 2000), a nationally representative, repeated cross-sectional survey, were used in the analysis. The self-concept is a social, flexible construct that shifts in response to the salience of a relationship partner. Three related experiments found that the tendency to pursue closeness in relationships (as measured by attachment style) served as a moderator of the shift. Specifically, individuals who avoid closeness in relationships became less similar to salient friends via contrast effects, whereas those who pursued closeness in relationships became more similar to salient friends via assimilation effects.
