Anaerobic digestion of fruit and vegetable waste (FVW) offers an environmentally friendly alternative for waste disposal, converting it into methane for energy recovery. Typically, FVW digestion is conducted in a continuously stirred tank reactor (CSTR) due to its ease of use and stability with solid concentrations between 5 and 10%. However, CSTRs are limited to organic loading rates (OLRs) of about 3 kg COD/m.

Steam explosion can be used to pretreat lignocellulosic materials to decrease energy and chemical consumption during pulping to obtain environmentally friendly lignin and to improve lignin yield without changing its structure. The objective of this study was to evaluate the extraction of lignin from oil palm mesocarp fibers and sugarcane bagasse using steam explosion pretreatment followed by acetosolv. The biomasses were pretreated at 168 °C for a reaction time of 10 min.

Carboxylic acids (CA) are considered high added-value compounds, and their production from wastes has gained economic and environmental notoriety. However, the CA production and kinetic modeling using some agro-industrial wastewaters, such as bovine slaughterhouse wastewater (SHW), are not well reported in the literature. Therefore, the objective of this work was to evaluate the CA production potential using SHW as a substrate under acidogenic conditions and to apply mathematical models to estimate the kinetic parameters of particulate organic matter hydrolysis, soluble organic matter consumption, and CA production.

This work aimed to evaluate the potential of anaerobic carboxylic acids (CA) production from swine wastewater (SW), perform modeling studies of the acidogenic process and estimate the kinetic parameters. Tests were carried out in four batch reactors with 250 mL reaction volume, with brewery sludge as inoculum and using chloroform (0.05%, v/v) for methanogenesis inhibition.

With the aim of improving knowledge about the stability and reliability of anaerobic wastewater treatment systems, several researchers have studied the effects of operational or environmental variations on the performance of such reactors. In general, anaerobic reactors are affected by changes in external factors, but the severity of the effect is dependent upon the type, magnitude, duration and frequency of the imposed changes. The typical responses include a decrease in performance, accumulation of volatile fatty acids, drop in pH and alkalinity, change in biogas production and composition, and sludge washout.
