Article Synopsis
  • Desmoid tumors are rare growths with an unclear cause that have recently been diagnosed more frequently after bariatric surgery.
  • A 26-year-old male presented with abdominal pain and was found to have a large desmoid tumor in the mesentery, three years post-sleeve gastrectomy, which was successfully surgically removed.
  • As obesity rates rise and more bariatric surgeries are performed, awareness of desmoid tumors' potential emergence after such procedures is important for timely diagnosis and treatment.

Article Synopsis
  • Scleroatrophic gallbladder is a rare condition that poses challenges in diagnosis and management, prompting a need for clearer diagnostic criteria and treatment guidelines.
  • A systematic review will be conducted according to PRISMA guidelines, analyzing studies from databases like Medline and Cochrane Library to identify preoperative diagnostic criteria and imaging tools.
  • The review aims to enhance understanding of the condition's diagnosis and improve clinical decision-making for treatment options.

Pancreatic solid pseudopapillary neoplasm (SPN) is a rare malignant tumour predominantly affecting young women. The occurrence of peritoneal carcinomatosis (PC) in this setting is an even rarer condition, usually related to perioperative tumour rupture. We present a case of a 43-year-old woman who previously underwent distal splenopancreatectomy after the diagnosis of a pancreatic SPN.

Background: Antibiotic resistance (AMR) is a growing public health problem worldwide, in part related to inadequate antibiotic use. A better knowledge of physicians' motivations, attitudes and practice about AMR and prescribing should enable the design and implementation of effective antibiotic stewardship programs (ASPs). The objective of the study was to assess attitudes and perceptions concerning AMR and use of antibiotics among surgeons who regularly perform emergency or trauma surgery.

Introduction: The core concepts of damage control and open abdomen in trauma surgery have been expanding for emergent general surgery. Temporary closures allow ease of access to the abdominal cavity for source control. The aim of the current study was to assess the outcomes of patients who underwent open abdomen management for acute abdominal conditions and evaluate risk factors for worse outcomes and inability of fascial closure during the initial hospitalization.

Background: Acute appendicitis (AA) is the most common surgical disease, and appendectomy is the treatment of choice in the majority of cases. A correct diagnosis is key for decreasing the negative appendectomy rate. The management can become difficult in case of complicated appendicitis.

Introduction: Laparoscopic splenectomy (LS) is the gold standard for the treatment of many spleen-related disorders. However, in the presence of splenomegaly, the rate of conversion to open surgery can be as high as 33.9% and is associated with longer operative times and higher costs.

Acute left sided colonic diverticulitis is one of the most common clinical conditions encountered by surgeons in acute setting. A World Society of Emergency Surgery (WSES) Consensus Conference on acute diverticulitis was held during the 3rd World Congress of the WSES in Jerusalem, Israel, on July 7th, 2015. During this consensus conference the guidelines for the management of acute left sided colonic diverticulitis in the emergency setting were presented and discussed.

Intra-abdominal infections (IAI) are an important cause of morbidity and are frequently associated with poor prognosis, particularly in high-risk patients. The cornerstones in the management of complicated IAIs are timely effective source control with appropriate antimicrobial therapy. Empiric antimicrobial therapy is important in the management of intra-abdominal infections and must be broad enough to cover all likely organisms because inappropriate initial antimicrobial therapy is associated with poor patient outcomes and the development of bacterial resistance.

Article Synopsis
  • Scientists created a new score to check how serious infections in the tummy area are for patients.
  • They studied over 4,500 patients in many hospitals around the world to see what factors affect survival rates.
  • The new score is very accurate in predicting if a patient will survive or not, which can help doctors make better decisions.

Article Synopsis
  • Inflammatory pseudotumours (IPTs) are rare, benign lesions that can develop in various organs, with the liver being the second most commonly affected.
  • These lesions often appear as solitary masses and can be mistaken for malignant liver tumors, which makes diagnosis complicated and often requires invasive procedures like biopsies.
  • A case study highlights a patient with multiple liver lesions initially thought to be metastatic cancer; however, they were ultimately diagnosed as IPTs after a laparoscopic biopsy, and all lesions resolved on their own without additional treatment.

Introduction: Cholangiocarcinoma is a rare tumor but recent data report a worldwide increase in incidence and mortality. There are several risk factors associated with cholangiocarcinoma, and chronic inflammation of billiary tree seems to be implied in the cholangiocarcinogenesis, but little is known about this process.

Presentation Of Case: We present a 56-year-old female with a bile duct adenoma incidentally discovered in the follow up of breast cancer that 18 months later progress to intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma.

Liver abscesses are very rare complications of ulcerative colitis, with only nine cases described in the literature, to our knowledge. We report a case where a recurrence of liver abscess occurred in an ulcerative colitis patient, in two different hepatic lobes, which has not been previously described. The recurrence was in the caudate lobe having the cultures yielded Staphylococcus aureus.
