This study aimed to describe reproductive ecology based on morphological aspects of Peckoltia oligospila in stream rapids, eastern Amazon. A total of 186 fish (75 males and 111 females) were collected. The sex and gonadal maturity stage of these specimens were obtained based on histological characteristics of the gonads.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFOogenesis in fish is a process that involves cell proliferation, growth and maturation. In rivers blocked by hydroelectric dams, these factors can be altered and affect the reproduction mechanism of the species. Regarding this scenario, the present study aimed to describe oogenesis in two cichlids native to the Amazon basin, Geophagus argyrostictus and G.

Objective: The aim of our study was to evaluate the expression of MMP-2 and MMP-9 as a prognostic factor in patients diagnosed with Hodgkin Lymphoma (HL).
Methods: In the present study, 45 paraffin biopsies from patients up to 19 years old diagnosed with HL were used in two referral hospitals in the state of Pernambuco, Brazil. Risk groups were classified into favorable and unfavorable, according to Ann Arbor.
We report an individual from Brazil with SHORT syndrome. The term SHORT stands for its common characteristics: short stature (S), hyperextensibility of joints, and/or inguinal hernia (H), ocular depression (O), Rieger anomaly (R), and teething delay (T). In addition to most of the clinical signs previously described in SHORT syndrome, the patient presented here also shows microcephaly and intellectual disability.

Accordingly, testicular studies in fish can contribute to the phylogeny and taxonomy of species and to the comparison of reproductive aspects between species. Thus, this work aimed to characterize the testicular morphology and spermatogenesis of the Hypostominae species Baryancistrus xanthellus, Peckoltia oligospila and Hypancistrus zebra.

A convenience sample of all 64 fourth-year dental students at a dental school in Brazil who had no previous experience with ICDAS was selected for the study in 2015. First, students performed the in vitro examination of the occlusal surfaces of 80 teeth according to ICDAS.

The aims of this study were to evaluate the influence (1) of the examiner experience and (2) three histological classification criteria on the reproducibility of two gold standard techniques (non-dye or dye) for validation of the diagnosis of occlusal caries. This study comprised a sample of 210 digital images of 105 permanent teeth (105 rhodamine B dyed and 105 dye-free hemisections) and six examiners. Images were evaluated on a laptop computer and categorised according to three different histological classification criteria (proposed by Ekstrand, Lussi or Downer) and repeated in order to allow reproducibility calculation.

Purpose: 11β-hydroxylase deficiency accounts for 5% of congenital adrenal hyperplasia cases. Diagnosis suspiction is classically based on the association between abnormal virilization, precocious puberty, and hypertension in 46XX or 46XY subjects. We investigated two families with siblings presenting with opposed clinical features, and provided a review of the mechanisms involved in mineralocorticoid-dependent phenotypic heterogeneity.

A previous combination of molecular markers and morphological traits improved the phylogeny of the group. Here we demonstrate the value of next-generation sequencing (NGS) to assemble the chloroplast genome of eight Anemopaegma species and solve taxonomic problems.

Next-generation sequencing (NGS) methods offer new possibilities for clade resolution and ambitious sampling of gene genealogies, yet difficulty remains in detecting deep reticulation events using currently available methods. We reconstructed the phylogeny of diploid representatives of Amaryllidaceae tribe Hippeastreae to test the hypothesis of ancient hybridizations preceding the radiation of its major subclade, Hippeastrinae.

Human papillomavirus (HPV) infections are strongly associated with the development of cervical intraepithelial neoplasias and invasive cervical cancer. Polymorphisms in cytokine-encoding genes and behavioural cofactors could play an important role in protecting an individual against viral infections and cancer. Here, we investigated whether IL-6 -174 G>C, IL-8 +396 G>T, and TGF-β1 +869 G>C and +915 G>C polymorphisms were associated with susceptibility to HPV infection in women from north-east (Pernambuco) Brazil.

Methods: Forty-eight patients aged from 5 to 13 years old were selected. Molars with active non-cavitated lesions on the occlusal surface were classified according to eruption stage.
3β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase II (3β-HSD) deficiency represents a rare CAH variant. Newborns affected with its classic form have salt wasting in early infancy and genital ambiguity in both sexes. High levels of 17-hydroxypregnenolone (Δ517OHP) are characteristic, but extra-adrenal conversion to 17-hydroxyprogesterone (17OHP) may lead to positive results on newborn screening tests.

For the study, 170 permanent molars were selected. Four dentists in Switzerland who had no previous contact with ICDAS examined the teeth before and after the e-learning program and scored the sites according to ICDAS.
