Carbonized polymer dots (CPDs) were obtained by using microwave irradiation under the same conditions. However, different carbogenic precursors were used, such as aromatic diamine molecules, -phenylenediamine (-OPDA), and 3,4-diaminobenzoic acid (3,4-DABA). Both carbon nanoparticles showed different structural results based on Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and atomic force microscopy analyses.

Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is caused by infection with the SARS-CoV-2 virus, having already caused more than seven million deaths worldwide. Conventional techniques for SARS-CoV-2 detection have limitations, as high cost, low specificity, and longer analysis time, among others. Biosensors emerge as a necessary alternative to overcome the difficulties of current diagnostics.

Background: Biogenic metallic and oxide metal nanoparticles have potential as alternatives for several current problems in agriculture, such as the control of caterpillars which cause huge losses in the production of important crops. In the present study, capped and uncapped silver, iron oxide and titanium dioxide nanoparticles were synthesized from the filtrate of Beauveria bassiana and evaluated in regard to physico-chemical characteristics, capping composition, cytotoxicity, genotoxicity and biological activity on Helicoverpa armigera and Spodoptera frugiperda caterpillars.

Results: A difference in the physico-chemical parameters of the capped and uncapped nanoparticles was observed, with larger aggregation and lower stability of the uncapped.

Dengue, yellow fever, Chinkungunya, Zika virus, and West Nile fever have infected millions and killed a considerable number of humans since their emergence. These arboviruses are transmitted by mosquito bites and topical chemical repellents are the most commonly used method to protect against vector arthropod species. This study aimed to develop a new generation of repellent formulations to promote improved arboviruses transmission control.

Carbon dots (CDs) are nanometer-scale particles produced from carbon sources that exhibit fluorescence emission. The present work presents the synthesis and characterization of CDs, as well as the sensing studies for the determination of chloramphenicol (CAP). CAP is an antibiotic used in human medicine and agriculture, and its indiscriminate use and inappropriate disposal have caused damage to human health and the environment.

Intellectual disability (ID) is considered a common neuropsychiatric disorder that affects up to 3% of the population. The etiologic origin of ID may be genetic, environmental, and multifactorial. Chromosomopathies are relatively common among the genetic causes of ID, especially in the most severe cases and those associated with dysmorphic features.

  • Silver (Ag), titanium dioxide (TiO), and iron (Fe) nanoparticles synthesized with the fungus Trichoderma harzianum were tested for their effectiveness against the agricultural pathogen Sclerotinia sclerotiorum and their potential toxic effects on the freshwater bivalve Anodontites trapesialis.* -
  • The study involved exposing bivalves to different nanoparticles for 24 hours, assessing bioaccumulation of metals and various biochemical markers to evaluate toxicity.* -
  • Results showed that A. trapesialis accumulated Ag from AgNP and experienced changes in ion concentrations, indicating susceptibility to AgNP, while exposure to TiONP and FeNP did not show significant harmful effects, suggesting these may

Article Synopsis
  • Repellents are crucial in preventing diseases from Aedes aegypti mosquitoes, but their high concentrations can be harmful, especially for children and pregnant women.
  • The study focused on creating polymeric nanocapsules for the repellents geraniol and icaridin using lower concentrations to enhance efficacy and reduce toxicity.
  • Results showed the nanocapsules had favorable sizes, high encapsulation efficiency, stable physicochemical properties, and did not negatively impact cell viability or DNA, indicating their potential as effective and safe mosquito repellents.

This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of replacing forage sorghum for dehydrated cashew bagasse (DCB) in the proportions of 0; 8; 16 and 24%, based on the natural matter at the time of ensiling on the physicochemical parameters of meat from feedlot lambs. None of the physical parameters evaluated showed a significant difference between the substitution levels of sorghum forage for DCB. The final pH obtained in this study showed a value above the recommended for freshly slaughtered meat from animals 24 hours in refrigeration, being considered DFD meat (dark, firm and dry).

Intestinal ischemia and reperfusion (I/R) is accompanied by an exacerbated inflammatory response characterized by deposition of IgG, release of inflammatory mediators, and intense neutrophil influx in the small intestine, resulting in severe tissue injury and death. We hypothesized that Fc RIIb activation by deposited IgG could inhibit tissue damage during I/R. Our results showed that I/R induction led to the deposition of IgG in intestinal tissue during the reperfusion phase.

The present study analyzed factors associated with the use of oral health services among elderly Brazilians. This was a cross-sectional study with data from the latest National Oral Health Survey (SB Brazil 2010), which considered a sample of 7,619 elderly individuals (65-74 years) for analysis. Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) was used, investigating the association between latent or observed variables, directly or mediated, in relation to the use of oral health services.

Topical delivery of local anesthetics (LAs) is commonly used to decrease painful sensations, block pain throughout procedures, and alleviate pain after surgery. Dermal and/or transdermal delivery of LAs has other advantages, such as sustained drug delivery and decreased systemic adverse effects. This study reports the development of poly(D,L-lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA) nanoparticles coated with chitosan for the sustained release and topicality of benzocaine (BZC) and topical delivery.

Aim: Intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) has limited therapeutic options. We have shown that an intravenous injection of human umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stromal cells (hUC-MSC) 24 h after an ICH in rats reduced the residual hematoma volume after a moderate hemorrhage but was inefficient in severe ICH. Here, we investigated whether a treatment in the hyperacute phase would be more effective in severe ICH.

In the last year, the advent of the COVID-19 pandemic brought a new consideration for the multidisciplinary sciences. The unknown mechanisms of infection used by SARS-CoV-2 and the absence of effective antiviral pharmacological therapy, diagnosis methods, and vaccines evoked scientific efforts on the COVID-19 outcome. In general, COVID-19 clinical features are a result of local and systemic inflammatory processes that are enhanced by some preexistent comorbidities, such as diabetes, obesity, cardiovascular, and pulmonary diseases, and biological factors, like gender and age.
