The study aimed to investigate the influence of different microalgae used in green water culture on the intestinal morphology of the seahorse Hippocampus reidi during the first 15 days of life. Four treatments were tested in triplicate, consisting of two microalgae (Tisochrysis lutea-ISO and Chaetoceros muelleri-CHO), used either individually (TISO and TCHO) or combined (TIC 1:1) in larval rearing water, and a treatment without microalgae (TWM). Article Synopsis
  • - Goiter, or enlargement of the thyroid gland, was observed in Brazilian basslets, a type of marine ornamental fish, in a research laboratory from 2016 to 2023, showing signs of tumor-like growths affecting feeding and respiration.
  • - Around 20 adult fish developed these growths in the pharyngeal cavity and gill arches, resulting in severe health issues and eventual death within months after the growth appeared.
  • - Histological analysis showed significant changes in thyroid cells, marking the first report of goiter in this species, and researchers recommend maintaining low nitrate levels and regular monitoring of iodine in water until more is known about the condition.

The effect of dietary protein concentration on the spatial distribution of digestive proteinases in the shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei indicates the existence of endo-ectoperitrophic enzyme circulation in this species. Samples recovered from the midgut gland tissues, stomach contents, three different portions of the midgut and feces were used for quantitative and qualitative analyses of the composition and distribution of the digestive proteinases. Animals were divided into three different groups: (1) animals (controls) fed with a commercial 35% protein diet, (2) animals fed with a commercial diet supplemented with ovalbumin to a final protein concentration of 60%; (3) animals fed with an 80% protein diet.
