Background: To address the reactivity and affinity against histidyl-transfer RNA synthetase (HisRS) autoantigen of anti-Jo1 autoantibodies from serum and bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) in patients with idiopathic inflammatory myopathies/anti-synthetase syndrome (IIM/ASSD). To investigate the associations between the reactivity profile and clinical data over time.

IgG Fc-glycans affect IgG function and are altered in autoimmune diseases and autoantibodies. Anti-histidyl tRNA synthetase autoantibodies (anti-Jo1) are frequent in patients with idiopathic inflammatory myopathies (IIM) and anti-synthetase syndrome (ASS) with associated interstitial lung disease (ILD). Thus, we hypothesized that the total-IgG Fc-glycans from Jo1 versus Jo1 patients and anti-Jo1-IgG would show characteristic differences, and that particular Fc-glycan features would be associated with specific clinical manifestations.

The objective of this study was to identify profiles of gamblers to explain the choice of preferred gambling activity among both problem and non-problem gamblers. 628 non-problem and problem gamblers were assessed with a structured interview including "healthy" (sociodemographic characteristics, gambling habits and personality profile assessed with the Temperament and Character Inventory-125) and "pathological" [diagnosis of pathological gambling, gambling-related cognitions (GRCs) and psychiatric comorbidity] variables. We performed a two-step cluster analysis based solely on "healthy" variables to identify gamblers' profiles which typically reflect the choice of preferred gambling activity.

The authors report a case of a 3 cm hepatocellular carcinoma at the junction of segments VI and VII with double bile duct tumoral thrombi (Types I and III). The type I thrombus was suspected during the pre-operative workup, but the type III bile duct tumoral thrombus (BDTT) was an intra-operative additional finding on cholangiography. The patient underwent a bisegmental posterolateral resection to remove the primary tumour and the first tumoral thrombus located in the posterolateral intrahepatic duct.

Prenatal cocaine exposure causes alterations in auditory brainstem response in children and experimental animals and has adverse effects on auditory information processing and language skills in children. These effects may result from lesions in the cochlea since this organ is particularly sensitive to chemical insults during the development. We have thus studied here the effect of prenatal cocaine exposure on the maturation of the rat cochlea using the transient non-catecholaminergic expression of tyrosine hydroxylase in spiral ganglion neurons as an index of cochlear maturation and morphometry to evaluate the maturation of primary auditory neurons and the organ of Corti.

Purpose: Mutations in the mitochondrial dynamin-related GTPase OPA1 cause autosomal dominant optic atrophy (ADOA), but the pathophysiology of this disease is unknown. As a first step in functional studies, this study was conducted to evaluate the expression of Opa1 in whole retina and in isolated retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) and to test the effects of Opa1 downregulation in cultured RGCs.

The diving response elicited by breath-holding (BH) and immersion mainly consists of bradycardia, decreased cardiac output, and peripheral vasoconstriction. These responses reduce oxygen consumption and thereby prolong the duration of the dive. They may also lead to cardiac arrhythmias or hypoxia, however, which in turn may play a role in the occurrence of syncope during BH.

Fast excitatory transmission in the nervous system is mostly mediated by alpha-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazole propionic acid (AMPA) receptors whose subunit composition governs physiological characteristics such as ligand affinity and ion conductance properties. Here, we report that AMPA receptors at inner hair cell (IHC) synapses lack the GluR2 subunit and are transiently Ca2+-permeable before hearing onset as evidenced using agonist-induced Co2+ accumulation, Western blots and GluR2 confocal microscopy in the rat cochlea. AMPA (100 microM) induced Co2+ accumulation in primary auditory neurons until postnatal day (PND) 10.

Apocrine adenocarcinoma of the skin is a rare and, most of the time, clinically misdiagnosed malignant adnexal tumour. A 66-year-old female patient presented with an asymptomatic swelling of the left nipple that on pathological evaluation was confirmed as an apocrine adenocarcinoma. Surgery is to be considered as the mean treatment for such a lesion and the diagnosis is always difficult to establish.

During the last stages of neuronal maturation, tyrosine hydroxylase is transiently expressed in the absence of the other catecholamine-synthesizing enzymes. We show here that it is expressed in rat spiral ganglion neurons between postnatal days 8 and 20, with a peak of expression at postnatal day 12. These tyrosine hydroxylase-immunoreactive neurons did not display aromatic amino acid decarboxylase- or dopamine-beta-hydroxylase-immunoreactivities, ruling out the possibilities of dopamine or noradrenaline synthesis.

The observation that in some cases tumors undergo spontaneous regression concomitantly with autoimmune manifestations has been interpreted as an indication of the involvement of the immune system in tumor rejection. This raised the conceptual possibility that the immune system could be used against the tumor. The selenium determination in biological materials by the classical fluorometric method (FM) is time-consuming and also hazardous, as it requires the destruction of the organic matrix samples with hot HNO3/HClO4 mixtures prior to analysis. Accordingly, commercial analytical laboratories are increasingly using faster instrumental methods; for sample digestion, avoid using HClO4. Because of these procedural changes, the results obtained by commercial laboratories may be unreliable, especially for samples containing Se in organic forms.

The effectiveness of yeast extracts (YE) and potato extracts (PE) to promote growth of seven lactic cultures was evaluated by automated spectrophotometry (AS). Two aspects of the growth curve were analysed: (1) maximum biomass obtained (using ODmax) and (2) highest specific growth rate mu(max)) Eleven lots from the same PE-manufacturing process were examined for lot-to-lot variability. The ODmax values of three of the seven strains were significantly affected by lot source, but mu(max) was not significantly affected.
