Purpose: The authors present the results of a prospective study of 125 consecutive cases of phacoemulsification, performed by a single surgeon, to assess the benefit of computerised videokeratoscopy for the improvement of the predictive calculation of the power of intraocular lenses (IOL).

Methods: Preoperative keratometry was determined by means of 3 concurrent techniques, including automated kerato-refractometry (AKR 2000, Nidek) and videokeratoscopy by TMS-1 (Tomey) and CAS-1 (EyeSys). The results of the IOL calculation by these 3 methods was compared postoperatively to the power of the actual IOL yielding emmetropia as calculated by the optical method based on the postop, refraction at the various time-points.

[Meibomian adenocarcinoma in its blepharo-conjunctival form. Apropos of a case].

A case of Meibomian carcinoma of the left eyelid was observed in a 53-year-old-female patient. SHe had been previously treated for chronic unilateral blepharoconjunctivitis; an excisional biopsy disclosed a Meibomian carcinoma. First a total resection of both left eyelids was performed with plastic reconstructive surgery, three months later a recurrence required an orbital exenteration.

[Quantitative topographic detection of keratoconus in the contralateral eye in clinically unilateral keratoconus. Apropos of 5 cases].

Background: Keratoconus is generally bilateral and follows an asymmetrical course. The goal of this study was to evaluate efficiency of the automated topographic screening indices on early keratoconus by examination of the fellow eyes of clinically unilateral keratoconus.

Patients And Method: We examined the fellow eyes of 5 cases of clinically unilateral keratoconus by videokeratography using TMS-1 Computed Anatomy device, which incorporates the keratoconus screening indices from Rabinowitz (K and I-S values) and Klyce/Maeda (KPI value and other quantitative induces as OSI, DSI and CSI).

[The optical power of the corneal epithelium. In vivo evaluation].

Purpose: The refracting power of the corneal epithelium is relatively unknown. We measured the keratometric refracting power of the cornea on 15 eyes of patients undergoing photorefractive keratectomy with and without epithelium.

Materials: The readings were performed with a videokeratoscope TMS-1.

[2nd generation bio-integrated keratoprosthesis. Implantation in animals].

Purpose: Our goal was to evaluate a second generation biointegrable keratoprosthetic device (BioKpro II).

Methods: The device consists of a porous transparent PTFE (12 mm diameter) and a soft copolymer structure for the optical system (7 mm diameter). Intraocular pression was evaluated with a Goldmann tonometer on an artificial chamber.

[Reticulated polyethylene oxide for gel injection adjustable keratoplasty. Biocompatibility in critical situation].

Background: GIAK is a surgical technique developed for the correction of myopia. We evaluated the biocompatibility of a gamma-ray crosslinked poly(ethylene oxide) gel in two critical situations.

Materials And Methods: In 3 rabbits, a 5 mm inner diameter annular channel of 1 mm width was delaminated at 80% corneal depth and a sterile gamma-ray crosslinked polyethylene oxide gel was injected in the channel.

Penetrating keratoplasty for keratoconus: role of videokeratoscopy and trephine sizing.

Purpose: To evaluate whether determining graft-host trephine disparity on the basis of videokeratoscopic data of keratoconus patients having penetrating keratoplasty (PKP) reduces ametropia and to correlate preoperative videokeratoscopic values, posterior axial length (PAL), and trephine disparity with postoperative refractive outcomes.

Incorporation of a fluorocarbon polymer implanted at the posterior surface of the rabbit cornea.

An implant of porous expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) in the corneal stroma allows fast cell colonization and can become translucent. We studied the behavior of the same polymer implanted in the anterior chamber of the rabbit eye and sutured to the posterior surface of the cornea. The expanded tetrafluoroethylene was provided as 200-micron thick sheets in 3 pore diameters (20, 50 and 80 microns).

Collagen synthesized in fluorocarbon polymer implant in the rabbit cornea.

The integration of microporous polymer into tissues is of great interest for the production of keratoprosthetic devices. Our previous studies showed functional differentiated cells and collagen synthesis in the pore of an expanded polytetrafluoroethylene implant. This study identifies and quantifies collagen types synthesized in the implant.

[Artificial cornea].

The cornea is the anterior transparent hole of the eye and its replacement by a synthetic material proves indispensable in some kinds of corneal blindness when penetrating keratoplasty is impossible. For a long time, the keratoprosthesis have been developed by different authors but results were always disappointing. Our personal works have been centered on the utilization of an expanded fluorocarbon polymer as interface between the optic of the keratoprosthesis and the cornea of the recipient.

[Epinephrine stability in solutions for intra-ocular irrigations].

Purpose: Epinephrine may be used for ocular irrigation during ophthalmic surgery when diluted in balanced saline solutions. In aqueous solution, epinephrine breakdown depends on pH, light, temperature, oxidating agents and increases with time.

Methods: The stability of epinephrine in plastic bags prepared in low concentrations (1 mg/L) was studied by HPLC analysis with UV detection, completed with pH determinations, performed after storage (protected from light) in various conditions: at room temperature (+25 degrees C), at +4 degrees C (in a refrigerator), at -20 degrees C (in a freezer).

[Efficacy and tolerability of a combination of indomethacin and gentamicin for preventing inflammation after cataract surgery].

[Comparative prospective study of effects of Biovisc and Healonid on endothelial cell loss and intraocular pressure in cataract surgery].

Purpose: The goal of this trial was to evaluate the efficacy (protective action on corneal endothelium and ability to facilitate the procedure) as well as safety (effect on intraocular pressure and inflammation) of Biovisc (new viscoelastic agent made of 1% sodium hyaluronate produced by bacterial fermentation) versus Healonid) postcataract surgery (manual or phacoemulsification).

Methods: 106 patients, 45 males and 61 females (31-94 years) were included in this prospective randomized multicentre trial and followed up for three months. Specular microscopy and intraocular pressure (IOP) measurement were the main evaluation criteria.

Basic fibroblast growth factor modulates corneal wound healing after excimer laser keratomileusis in rabbits.

We have previously demonstrated beneficial effects of basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) on corneal epithelial healing in different in vivo models. In the present study, we investigated the influence on epithelial and stromal healing of topical bFGF after excimer laser keratomileusis in a rabbit model. The corneas of 24 New Zealand white rabbits were deepithelialized (7-mm diameter) and subsequently received identical deep stromal laser ablations (depth, 50 microns; 6 D; diameter, 5 mm).

Phase II trial of anaxirone (TGU) in advanced colorectal cancer: an EORTC Early Clinical Trials Group (ECTG) study.

Anaxirone, a rationally synthesised triepoxide derivative, was given to 46 patients with metastatic colorectal cancer. Good risk patients received 800 mg/m2 as a rapid intravenous injection every 4 weeks, whereas poor risk patients received 650 mg/m2. Of 46 patients, 45 were evaluable for toxicity and 42 for efficacy analysis.
