Background & Aims: The operating properties of histologic indices for evaluating Crohn's disease (CD) activity are poorly characterized. Methods: A 2-round modified RAND/University of California at Los Angeles Appropriateness Method study was conducted.
This paper introduces this special issue aiming to deepen and extend research on mathematics teachers' work, from a resource perspective, by taking language and culture into account, and exploring two questions: How are teachers' interactions with resources interpreted and modeled across contexts? And, What challenges and insights emerge through recent efforts to engage these models in cross-cultural (and linguistic) research? The fields of resources, language and culture in mathematics education are each extensive, and we do not attempt to survey comprehensively across them. We have chosen instead to propose three approaches on resources in mathematics teachers' work that developed somewhat contemporaneously from three different countries with differing linguistic, curricular, and social contexts, corresponding to the work of the three guest editors. The models developed through these approaches are driven by the educational, and so cultural and material conditions of the time and the location of each author, and allow us to propose preliminary answers to our two guiding questions.

We evaluated the operating properties of endoscopic measures for use in EoE RCTs.
Methods: Modified Research and Development/University of California Los Angeles appropriateness methods and a panel of 15 international EoE experts identified endoscopic items and definitions with face validity that were used in a 2-round voting process to define simplified (all items graded as absent or present) and expanded versions (additional grades for edema, furrows, and/or exudates) of the EoE Endoscopic Reference Score (EREFS).
Background: Pouchitis is a condition with large unmet medical needs and no approved therapies. Lack of validated instruments to measure disease activity and treatment response is a major barrier to drug development.
Aim: To conduct a modified RAND/University of California Los Angeles appropriateness process to produce a standardised assessment of pouchitis disease activity in clinical trials.
A case study of persistent stratocumulus over the Azores is simulated using two independent large-eddy simulation (LES) models with bin microphysics, and forward-simulated cloud radar Doppler moments and spectra are compared with observations. Neither model is able to reproduce the monotonic increase of downward mean Doppler velocity with increasing reflectivity that is observed under a variety of conditions, but for differing reasons. To a varying degree, both models also exhibit a tendency to produce too many of the largest droplets, leading to excessive skewness in Doppler velocity distributions, especially below cloud base.

Results: Apps incorporated a limited range of behavior change techniques (<20% of taxonomy).
Objective: The objective of our study was to evaluate the effectiveness of ultrasound-guided corticosteroid injection for the treatment of gluteus medius tendinopathy.
Subjects And Methods: We prospectively evaluated 54 consecutive patients (48 women, six men; mean age, 54.7 years; mean body mass index, 26 kg/m2) with a clinical diagnosis of gluteus medius tendinopathy.
Patient-centered interactive communication between physicians and patients is recommended to improve the quality of medical care. Numerical concepts are important components of such exchanges and include arithmetic and use of percentages, as well as higher level tasks like estimation, probability, problem-solving, and risk assessment--the basis of preventive medicine. Difficulty with numerical concepts may impede communication.

View Article and Find Full Text PDFIn situ measurements of the fluorescence spectra, intensity, and response time were made at elevated temperatures (~500 degrees C) for samples of Cu-ZSM-5 exposed to dilute mixtures of O(2) in N(2) and to various O(2)-reductant combinations in N(2). The results of these experiments are interpreted with a physical model of the oxidation/reduction kinetics of the copper ions. The fluorescence signal depends strongly on the gas composition, providing a mechanism for a gas composition sensor.

Five mechanisms are identified: intrinsic absorption, bulk scattering, losses that are due to roughness at the core-cladding interface, losses that are due to large-scale defects at the core-cladding interface, and losses that are due to absorption in the cladding material; and the effects of each of these on light-pipe transmission are considered. An approximate model appropriate for slightly rough surfaces is used to estimate the loss that is due to interface roughness.

The line-shape information gives a measure of the dynamical behavior of the material and what is to our knowledge the first observation of an interference line shape due to a dominant slow contribution to the nonlinear response.
