A survey regarding utilisation of brachytherapy was distributed to European brachytherapy professionals. Eighty replies from 26 countries were received, two of which were outside Europe. The replies showed that brachytherapy is still widely used.

Modern brachytherapy (BT) is playing an important role in the multidisciplinary treatment of Head and Neck (H&N) cancer, as an organ- and function-preserving therapy. Low-dose-rate (LDR) technology has been replaced by modern remote afterloading and stepping source equipment using pulsed dose rate (PDR) or high dose rate (HDR) sources, improved image guidance and 3D treatment planning systems. This is an update of the previous GEC-ESTRO recommendations for H&N tumors, mainly applied to squamous carcinomas.

Background: Barrier films or dressings were reported to be effective in preventing radiation dermatitis (RD) in breast cancer patients, but their comparative efficacy is unknown.

Methods: A systematic literature search was performed on Embase, MEDLINE and Cochrane CENTRAL Registry of Clinical Trials from inception to October 20, 2023. Randomised controlled trials (RCTs) comparing barrier films or dressings to the standard of care (SOC) or other interventions were included.

Background: There is currently no staging system for cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC) that is adapted to decision-making and universally used. Experts have unconscious ability to simplify the heterogeneity of clinical situations into a few relevant groups to drive their therapeutic decisions. Therefore, we have used unsupervised clustering of real cases by experts to generate an operational classification of cSCCs, an approach that was successful for basal cell carcinomas.

: Dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans (DFSP) is a superficial soft tissue sarcoma, and surgical excision is the first-line treatment. The aim of this systematic review is to provide an update about the current indications and clinical results regarding the use of postoperative radiotherapy in DSFP, considering both adjuvant and salvage setting. : We conducted a systematic literature review using the main scientific database, including Cochrane library, Scopus, and PubMed, for any relevant article about the topic, and we considered all available papers without any time restriction.

Introduction: Bones are frequent sites of metastatic disease, observed in 30-75% of advanced cancer patients. Quality of life (QoL) is an important endpoint in studies evaluating the treatments of bone metastases (BM), and many patient-reported outcome tools are available. The primary objective of this systematic review was to compile a list of QoL issues relevant to BM and its interventions.

Introduction: Malignant spinal cord compression (MSCC) is an oncological emergency that may result in a devastating combination of malignancy and disability. Existing quality of life (QoL) questionnaires commonly used in MSCC literature (EORTC QLQ-C30, BM-22, Brief Pain Inventory, and Spine Oncology Study Group Outcomes) may not capture all the commonly reported symptoms and lack specificity to MSCC. The primary objective of this systematic review is to determine unmet patient needs and underreported QoL issues and compile a comprehensive list of QoL issues.

Background And Objective: Leptomeningeal disease (LMD) is associated with poor survival and health-related quality of life (HRQoL). There is an urgent need for clinical research in this area to improve the outcomes. The purpose of this study is to summarize the areas of active clinical research in LMD, identify the knowledge gap, and suggest future research directions.

Article Synopsis
  • * Three randomized controlled trials involving 642 patients were analyzed, revealing that while overall pain response did not significantly differ between the two methods, SBRT showed a marked improvement in complete pain response after both 3 and 6 months.
  • * SBRT was found to have similar adverse events compared to cEBRT, but it resulted in significantly less radiation dermatitis; the research suggests SBRT may be a safer and more effective option for certain patients, prompting the need for further research.

Article Synopsis
  • Improvements in radiation treatments have made palliative whole brain radiation therapy (WBRT) much less common, with doctors preferring stereotactic radiotherapy (SRT) for many cases.
  • A study looked at the survival of patients who received WBRT in 2022, finding that only a small percentage (1.5%) needed this type of treatment.
  • The average survival time after WBRT was about 84 days, showing that while it's sometimes necessary, it often doesn't lead to long survival.

Radiotherapy is an important treatment modality for pain control in patients with bone metastases. Stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT), which allows delivering a much higher dose per fraction while sparing critical structures compared to conventional external beam radiotherapy (cEBRT), has become more widely used, especially in the oligometastatic setting. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing the pain response rate of SBRT and cEBRT for bone metastases have shown conflicting results, as have four recent systematic reviews with meta-analyses of these trials.

Brachytherapy has a long history of delivering a highly conformal radiation dose to the target volume with sparing of adjacent normal tissue and has an irreplaceable role in certain cancers, such as cervical and prostate cancers. There have been futile attempts to replace brachytherapy with other radiation techniques. Despite that there are multifaceted challenges in preserving this dying art, from establishment, to a trained workforce, to maintenance of the equipment and source replacement costs.

Introduction: Non-melanoma skin cancer (NMSC) is becoming ever more prevalent among older adults. However, older adults with NMSC are often underrepresented in clinical trials and guidelines on effective management is still unclear. The International Society of Geriatric Oncology (SIOG) created a multi-disciplinary task force to explore the potential in developing practical guidelines for the treatment of older patients with basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and skin (cutaneous) squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC).

Skin brachytherapy represents an excellent alternative treatment for patients with non-melanoma skin cancers. It offers superior conformity of dose distribution with rapid dose fall off, reducing the risk of radiotherapy-related treatment toxicity. A smaller treatment volume in brachytherapy, when compared with external beam radiotherapy, is conducive for hypofractionation, which is an attractive option for decreasing outpatient visits to the cancer centre, especially for elderly and frail patients.

Purpose: Radiotherapy techniques have been utilized to treat keratinocyte skin carcinoma (KSC). The objective of this study was to report the results of patients with KSC treated with HDR brachytherapy, with a variety of techniques and applicators. A statistical analysis of clinical, radiobiological, and technical factors has been made to analyze those factors related to skin acute toxicity, focused on acute epithelitis G3.

The aim of this publication is the assessment of the existing guidelines for non-melanoma skin cancer (NMSC) superficial brachytherapy (BT) and make a critical review based on the existing literature about the maximum dose prescription depth, bolus thickness and maximum skin surface dose (D) of the published clinical practice. A systematic review of NMSC superficial BT published articles was carried out by the GEC-ESTRO Head & Neck and Skin (HNS) Working Group (WG). 10 members and 2 external reviewers compared the published clinical procedures with the recommendations in the current guidelines and examined the grade of evidence.
