The genus Salacia (Celastraceae) consists of many important medicinal plants used mainly against type II diabetes. Segregation and delimitation of species is difficult based on morphological features alone. DNA barcoding is the most effective and emerging method of molecular identification.

Among the 16 fungi screened, OmF3, OmF4, and OmF6 were identified to synthesize CPT. Further LC-MS analysis also showed the presence of CPT specific m/z of 349 for the extracts from OmF3, OmF4, and OmF6.

Many of the members are important spice, medicinal or ornamental plants including ginger, turmeric, cardamom and kaempferia. These plants are distinguished for the highly valuable metabolic products, which are synthesised through phenylpropanoid pathway, where type III polyketide synthase is the key enzyme.
