Background: Cactus contains dietary fiber and minerals and is expected to have preventive effects against diabetes, arteriosclerosis, and other diseases. Additionally, cactus intake induces the production of short-chain fatty acids derived from the gut microbiota, which might influence immune functions. In this study, we examined the effects of a cactus (: NC)-supplemented diet on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced immune responses and intestinal barrier function.

Heterogeneous distribution of PSI and PSII in thick grana in shade chloroplasts is argued to hinder spillover of chlorophyll excitations from PSII to PSI. To examine this dogma, we measured fluorescence induction at 77K at 690 nm (PSII) and 760 nm (mostly PSI) in the leaf discs of Spinacia oleracea, Cucumis sativus and shade tolerant Alocasia odora, grown at high and low light, and quantified their spillover capacities. PSI fluorescence (FI) consists of the intrinsic PSI fluorescence (FIα) and fluorescence caused by excitations spilt over from PSII (FIβ).

High-energy nuclear collisions create a quark-gluon plasma, whose initial condition and subsequent expansion vary from event to event, impacting the distribution of the eventwise average transverse momentum [P([p_{T}])]. Disentangling the contributions from fluctuations in the nuclear overlap size (geometrical component) and other sources at a fixed size (intrinsic component) remains a challenge. This problem is addressed by measuring the mean, variance, and skewness of P([p_{T}]) in ^{208}Pb+^{208}Pb and ^{129}Xe+^{129}Xe collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.

The DNA damage response (DDR) is an essential mechanism for maintaining genomic stability. Although DDR-targeted therapeutic strategies are being developed in several familial cancers, evaluation of their utility in head and neck squamous cell cancer (HNSCC) is lagging. This review briefly summarizes the mechanisms of DDR and the current knowledge on discovering DDR-related predictive biomarkers in HNSCC.

Background/aim: Metastatic patterns are the most convenient and common prediction models for the prognosis of patients with stage IV colorectal cancer. However, current prediction models do not include the severity of metastases in organs and exclude certain types of metastatic patterns. The aim of this study was to develop a prediction model that included several metastatic organs as well as the severity of liver and lung metastases, based on the Japanese Classification of Colorectal, Appendiceal, and Anal Carcinoma: the 3 English Edition.

Article Synopsis
  • CHDED (Congenital Heart Defect and Ectodermal Dysplasia) is an autosomal dominant disorder linked to the PRKD1 gene, characterized by heart issues and ectodermal abnormalities.
  • A case study of a 9-month-old Japanese girl demonstrated brain calcifications and seizures, revealing a new pathogenic variant in the PRKD1 gene.
  • It is suggested that PRKD1, along with ITGB2 and JAM2, may interact through a common signaling pathway leading to brain calcifications, providing insight into the genetic basis of this disorder.

Background: Nonanatomical anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction occasionally induces ACL failure without an evident injury episode, necessitating revision surgery. Although the in vivo kinematics of ACL deficiency before primary ACL reconstruction are well documented, the kinematics of ACL failure after nonanatomical reconstruction remain unexplored. The aim of this study is to investigate ACL failure kinematics following nonanatomical reconstruction.

Introduction: To analyze the molecular pathogenesis of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2), a small animal model such as mice is needed: human angiotensin converting enzyme 2 (hACE2), the receptor of SARS-CoV-2, needs to be expressed in the respiratory tract of mice.

Methods: We conferred SARS-CoV-2 susceptibility in mice by using an adenoviral vector expressing hACE2 driven by an elongation factor 1α (EF1α) promoter with a leftward orientation.

Results: In this model, severe pneumonia like human COVID-19 was observed in SARS-CoV-2-infected mice, which was confirmed by dramatic infiltration of inflammatory cells in the lung with efficient viral replication.

Background: Recombinant human fibroblast growth factor-2 (rhFGF-2) has been shown to effectively promote the formation of new periodontal tissues, and its efficacy has been demonstrated in clinical settings. Moreover, the clinical and radiographic outcomes in the treatment of periodontal infrabony defects can be improved by using rhFGF-2 in combination with a bone substitute. Here, we present a case of four-wall bone defect in a tooth treated by combination regenerative therapy using rhFGF-2 and beta-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP).

Collective phenomena arise from interactions within complex systems, leading to behaviors absent in individual components. Observing quantum collective phenomena with macroscopic mechanical oscillators has been impeded by the stringent requirement that oscillators be identical. We demonstrate the quantum regime for collective motion of = 6 mechanical oscillators, a hexamer, in a superconducting circuit optomechanical platform.

Renal lesions due to systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) are defined as lupus nephritis (LN), a renal disease characterized by the deposition of immunoglobulin (Ig)G-based immune complexes in the kidney and the appearance of double-stranded DNA and Smith antibodies. In particular, deposition of IgG3, which has strong complement binding properties, under the endothelium or in the mesangium activates the classical complement pathway of C1q, C4, and C3, leading to renal damage. This step is followed by migration of inflammatory cells, including neutrophils and monocytes, which induce inflammation in the glomerular capillaries and cause mesangiolysis and endothelial cell damage, resulting in endocapillary proliferative nephritis.
