A surveillance system for sales volumes of antimicrobial agents for veterinary use was established in Germany in 2011. Since then, pharmaceutical companies and wholesalers have been legally obliged to report annual volumes of veterinary antimicrobial products sold to veterinary practices or clinics located in Germany. The evaluation of sales volumes for eight consecutive years resulted in a considerable total decrease by 58% from 1706 tons to 722 tons.

Narcolepsy is a rare, multifactorial disease of the hypothalamus characterized by its leading symptoms of excessive daytime sleepiness and cataplexy. Sleep-EEG and a HLA-DR-genotype serve to secure the diagnosis. We report here on a 14-year-old girl suffering from anxieties, depression, school refusal, social withdrawal as well as very frequent attacks of sleep during the day and cataplexy.

For the implementation of risk management measures against the development and spread of antimicrobial resistances it is important to gain a quantitative insight into the use of veterinary antimicrobial agents. Since 2011, all pharmaceutical companies and wholesalers in Germany are required to report their sales data of veterinary antimicrobial products (VAPs). In 2011, 1706 t of antimicrobially active substances were sold to veterinarians registered in Germany, in 2012 the amount decreased to 1619 t.

What is the role of higher-order spike correlations for neuronal information processing? Common data analysis methods to address this question are devised for the application to spike recordings from multiple single neurons. Here, we present a new method which evaluates the subthreshold membrane potential fluctuations of one neuron, and infers higher-order correlations among the neurons that constitute its presynaptic population. This has two important advantages: Very large populations of up to several thousands of neurons can be studied, and the spike sorting is obsolete.

Measuring pairwise and higher-order spike correlations is crucial for studying their potential impact on neuronal information processing. In order to avoid misinterpretation of results, the tools used for data analysis need to be carefully calibrated with respect to their sensitivity and robustness. This, in turn, requires surrogate data with statistical properties common to experimental spike trains.

Evidence for deviant maturation of sensory processing in migraine has come recently from cross-sectional studies during childhood. Age-dependent development of response preparation and evaluation is characterized using a longitudinal design in school-aged migraine patients and controls in order to challenge the hypothesis of migraine as a maturation disorder. Forty-six children with migraine and 57 healthy controls aged 6-18 years were investigated and followed up 4 years later using a simple acoustic contingent negative variation (CNV) paradigm.
