Tumor-specific cytotoxic T-lymphocytes (CTLs) recognize tumor-associated antigens presented on major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class I molecules. However, it is difficult to induce potent CTLs by vaccination because the antigenicity is not so high, compared with that of foreign antigens derived from viruses and microbes. The affinity of binding to MHC class I molecules is proportional to the antigenicity of the antigen that they are presenting.
