Human induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cell-derived hepatocyte-like cells (HLCs) are expected to replace primary human hepatocytes (PHHs) as a new stable source of hepatocytes for pharmaceutical research. However, HLCs have lower hepatic functions than PHHs, require a long time for differentiation and cannot be prepared in large quantities because they do not proliferate after their terminal differentiation. To overcome these problems, we here established hepatic organoids (iHOs) from HLCs.

Spleen tyrosine kinase (Syk), a non-receptor-type tyrosine kinase, has a wide range of physiological functions. A possible role of Syk in Alzheimer's disease (AD) has been proposed. We evaluated the localization of Syk in the brains of patients with AD and control participants.

Article Synopsis
  • Apraxia of eyelid opening (AEO) is a rare symptom in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD), often complicating treatment.
  • A case study highlights a 64-year-old woman with PD who initially responded to medication but developed AEO and blepharospasm at age 69, with other treatments failing to help.
  • Trihexyphenidyl (THP) eventually led to significant improvement in her AEO by age 73, suggesting THP's potential effectiveness in managing this specific symptom.

Article Synopsis
  • Neurologic symptoms are frequently observed in COVID-19, with demyelination identified as a significant neuropathological change, but its exact causes are still unclear.
  • A case study revealed extensive demyelination in the medulla oblongata, spinal canal, and cerebrum of a COVID-19 patient who died from sepsis, with unique patterns of demyelination suggesting distinct pathways of viral spread.
  • The demyelination patterns observed in the patient may have been influenced by pre-existing conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, and spinal canal stenosis.

Article Synopsis
  • Clinically mild encephalitis/encephalopathy with reversible splenial lesion is marked by temporary neuropsychiatric symptoms and abnormal MRI results showing hyperintensity in the splenium of the corpus callosum.
  • A case study revealed postmortem findings of intramyelinic edema and other brain changes in a patient with hypoglycemia and sepsis, suggesting a link between cytotoxic edema and the syndrome.
  • Researchers propose that the term "cytotoxic lesions of the corpus callosum" may be relevant for understanding this condition and others with similar causes.

An 80-year-old woman with a history of rheumatoid arthritis, hypertension, and hyperlipidemia, and no family history of hyperkinesis developed suddenly involuntary movement and visited our hospital two-day after onset. Neuro-examination revealed hemichorea-hemiballismus in the right side of the body, including the face (Suppl. video).

The neuropathological hallmarks of Alzheimer's disease (AD) are senile plaques (SPs), which are composed of amyloid β protein (Aβ), and neurofibrillary tangles (NFTs), which consist of highly phosphorylated tau protein. As bio-metal imbalance may be involved in the formation of NFT and SPs, metal regulation may be a direction for AD treatment. Clioquinol (CQ) is a metal-protein attenuating compound with mild chelating effects for Zn and Cu, and CQ can not only detach metals from SPs, but also decrease amyloid aggregation in the brain.

A 56-year-old man presented to our hospital as he presented progressive hemiplegia of the right upper limb with no other symptoms, including chest pain. Inter-arm blood pressure difference was not observed. Laboratory investigations revealed an elevated D-dimer value (2.

Article Synopsis
  • A 59-year-old man with a history of asthma and sinusitis experienced weakness and sensory loss in his lower limbs three days after undergoing surgery for malignant melanoma.
  • Laboratory tests showed elevated eosinophils and immunoglobulin E levels, raising initial suspicion of eosinophilic polyangiitis granulomatosis (EGPA) as the cause of his symptoms.
  • A nerve biopsy indicated lymphocyte-dominated inflammation but ruled out EGPA, leading to a diagnosis of early onset post-surgical inflammatory neuropathy (PIN), which improved significantly with treatment using prednisolone.

A 75-year-old woman developed low back pain, weakness of the lower extremities, and urinary retention. On day 7 after the onset of symptoms, she was brought to the emergency department of our hospital by an ambulance because of progressive weakness of both lower extremities. Spine MRI showed longitudinally extensive spinal cord lesion (LESCL) at the Th8-Th11 spinal cord level and flow voids around the lesions.

Severe neurologic complications following epidural and spinal anesthesia rarely occur. Transverse myelitis has been reported as a rare complication of epidural or spinal anesthesia. We report a case of longitudinally extensive transverse myelitis and an isolated pontine lesion, which responded to immunotherapy.

Backgrounds: Large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma (LCNEC) is well-known as a lung cancer subtype. This study assessed the prevalence of head and neck mucosal LCNEC (M-LCNEC).

Methods: M-LCNEC was studied clinically, histologically and immunohistochemically.
