Is Subcapital Realignment for Slipped Capital Femoral Epiphysis a Reproducible Technique? Midterm Results.

Background: The modified Dunn procedure, which is based on the development of an extended retinacular flap containing the blood supply for the femoral head, allows anatomic reestablishment in patients with moderate to severe slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE). Some controversy exists regarding the short-term to midterm risk of avascular necrosis (AVN) and other complications resulting from the surgical technique.

Questions/purposes: (1) What percentage of patients treated with an extended retinacular flap during the modified Dunn procedure for SCFE with a moderate (slip angle from 30° to 60°) or severe slip (slip angle equal or greater than 60°) develop symptomatic AVN, and what percentage underwent further surgery or had other complications? (2) What femoral head-neck alignment and position parameters relative to the greater trochanter are achieved after surgery? (3) Can we identify radiographic signs of osteoarthritis at a minimum of 4 years after surgery?

Methods: Between January 2006 and December 2018, we treated 61 patients for SCFE.

Alterations in the vegetation resulting from the paleoclimatic changes that occurred during the Pleistocene influenced the current distribution of these humid forests. To understand of the evolutionary dynamics of this landscape on the population structure of the associated organisms, we studied the population genetics of the Antilophia galeata (Pipridae), a bird endemic to the gallery forests of the Cerrado.

Therapeutic Use of VR Serious Games in the Treatment of Negative Schizophrenia Symptoms: A Systematic Review.

Schizophrenia is a chronic brain disorder that affects 1 in every 300 people worldwide. This study intended to perform a systematic review to describe the state-of-the-art of interventions involving patients with negative symptoms of schizophrenia that use Virtual Reality (VR) games as a complement to therapy, and to analyze the key features of such games. Literature research was conducted in three databases, namely, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), Scopus, and PubMed, to identify relevant publications dated from 2010 to 2021.

Shorebirds' Longer Migratory Distances Are Associated With Larger Microsatellites and Greater Morphological Complexity of Hippocampal Astrocytes.

For the epic journey of autumn migration, long-distance migratory birds use innate and learned information and follow strict schedules imposed by genetic and epigenetic mechanisms, the details of which remain largely unknown. In addition, bird migration requires integrated action of different multisensory systems for learning and memory, and the hippocampus appears to be the integration center for this task. In previous studies we found that contrasting long-distance migratory flights differentially affected the morphological complexity of two types of hippocampus astrocytes.

Measuring Acetabular Version after Total Hip Arthroplasty: A Comparison of Two Radiographic Methods.

 The objective of the present work was to compare the measurement of acetabular component version on anteroposterior (AP) and on cross-table radiographs after total hip arthroplasty (THA).  Radiographs of 60 hips with a primary THA were selected. Version was calculated on the AP radiograph using the Lewinnek method and, on the cross-table, using the Woo and Morrey direct method.

Mannitol Crystallization at Sub-Zero Temperatures: Time/Temperature-Resolved Synchrotron X-ray Diffraction Study and the Phase Diagram.

Mannitol, a common pharmaceutical ingredient, exhibits complex polymorphism even in simple binary mannitol/water mixtures, with four crystalline forms observed. In this investigation, time/temperature-resolved synchrotron X-ray diffraction measurements are performed during freezing and thawing of mannitol/water mixtures. Mannitol crystallization depends strongly on the cooling rate and is initiated during cooling, if the cooling rate is lower than the critical cooling rate; otherwise, mannitol remains amorphous during freezing and crystallizes during subsequent heating above -30 °C.

Mitochondrial heteroplasmy and pseudogenes in the freshwater prawn, (Heller, 1862): DNA barcoding and phylogeographic implications.

The mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase c subunit 1 (COI) gene has been widely used in phylogenetic studies of crustaceans and analyses in population genetics. As COI studies have become more popular, there has been an increase in the number of reports of the presence of nuclear insertions of mitochondrial DNA (Numts) and mitochondrial heteroplasmy. Here, we provide evidence of both types of event in the COI sequences of , an economically important freshwater prawn, which is widespread in South America.

Femoral neck osteotomy in skeletally mature patients: surgical technique and midterm results.

Purpose: Using an extended retinacular flap containing the blood supply for the femoral head, proximal femur osteotomies can be performed at the neck level increasing the potential of correction of complex morphologies. The aim of this study was to analyze the safety, clinical, and radiographic results of this intra-articular surgical technique performed in skeletally mature patients with a minimum follow-up of three years.

Methods: Fourteen symptomatic adult patients (16 hips) with a mean age of 26 years underwent FNO using surgical hip dislocation and an extended soft tissue flap.

Interfacial Stress and Container Failure During Freezing of Bulk Protein Solutions Can Be Prevented by Local Heating.

Bottles and carboys are used for frozen storage and transport of biopharmaceutical formulations under a wide range of conditions. The quality of freezing and thawing in these systems has been questioned due to the formation of heterogeneous ice structures and deformation of containers. This work shows that during freezing of bulk protein solutions, the liquid at the air-liquid interface freezes first, forming an ice crust and enclosing the liquid phase.

Advances in FAI Imaging: a Focused Review.

Purpose Of Review: Femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) is one of the main causes of hip pain in young adults and poses clinical challenges which have placed it at the forefront of imaging and orthopedics. Diagnostic hip imaging has dramatically changed in the past years, with the arrival of new imaging techniques and the development of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). This article reviews the current state-of-the-art clinical routine of individuals with suspected FAI, limitations, and future directions that show promise in the field of musculoskeletal research and are likely to reshape hip imaging in the coming years.

Methods: A validated Delphi method and peer-reviewed literature were used to formally derive consensus among 30 panel members (21 musculoskeletal radiologists and 9 orthopaedic surgeons) from 13 countries.

Genetic diversity and structuring in the arapaima (Osteoglossiformes, Osteoglossidae) population reveal differences between the Amazon and the Tocantins-Araguaia basins.

Arapaima is a widely-distributed fish of enormous economic importance in the Amazon region. In the present study, a total of 232 specimens were sampled, 121 from five sites in the Amazon basin and 111 from five sites in the Tocantins-Araguaia basin. The analyses investigated fragments of the Cytochrome b, Control Region, Cytochrome Oxidase I, NADH dehydrogenase subunit 2 and seven loci microsatellites.

A New Perspective on Scale-Down Strategies for Freezing of Biopharmaceutics by Means of Computational Fluid Dynamics.

Common approaches to scale-down freeze-thaw systems are based on matching time-temperature profiles at corresponding points; however, little is known about the differences in anisotropy between the 2 scales. In this work, computational fluid dynamics modeling was used to investigate these differences. The modeling of the convective flow of the liquid phase within ice porous structure and volume expansion caused by freezing enabled accurate prediction of the local temperature and composition, for evaluation of potential stresses on protein stability, such as cryoconcentration and time in the nonideal environment.

In this paper, a novel approach for online design of optimal control systems applied to the bulk resumption process by bucket wheel reclaimer (BWR) is presented. This approach is based on reinforcement learning paradigms, more specifically Action Dependent Heuristic Dynamic Programming (ADHDP), that learn online in real-time the Discrete Linear Quadratic Regulator (DLQR) optimal control solution with integral action. Due to the geometric irregularities of the storage yard stacks and variation in physical and chemical characteristics of the stacked material, the flow control of solid bulks by bucket wheel reclaimer requires methods that are suitable with the high degree of imprecision of process variables and environment uncertainties.
